“I cannot subscribe to these suggestions,” said Fr. Raymond Gravel, a priest and former federal politician well known for publicly criticizing the Vatican over the Church’s teachings against homosexuality. "I find it deplorable that a man who is a cardinal, archbishop of Quebec, would hold views like these. It’s as if women were nothing and what is important is to save their fetus, however it was conceived. We are dealing with rape here.”
Time for laicization methinks!

Everyone in Quebec is so shocked at the Cardinal’s statement, which is just a simple statement of Catholic teaching. I suppose that’s what happens when people don’t hear the truth for years and years on end!

Or they choose to ignore teaching until it hits page-one in the secular press.

This guy is no priest, promoting abortion, supporting homosexuality, running for and taking electoral office… he’s just daring his bishop to have him laicized…one just wonders why he hasn’t been turfed out yet.
Then in 2004, Fr. Gravel declared his support for abortion on Quebec radio. “I am pro-choice and there is not a bishop on earth that will prevent me from receiving Communion, not even the pope,” he told Radio-Canada.
Hmmmm:eek:

This “Priest” is why I am always cautious about blindly following what a Bishop may say or do. For those who have followed what this Priest has done is no surprise. The surprise is that the Bishop hasn’t laicized him yet?

Father Gavel has been conducting in a manner that is so against the Catholic Church and Her teachings for some time now, the Bishop would probably have already acted within the disciplinary structures that is particular to these cases. Also, the reduction of priests to the lay state follows a juridical procedure which can be very protracted. Unfortunately, the Bishop has a very disobedient and loose priest. I do not know what else the Bishop can do in the meantime. Does anyone know? Perhaps, Bro JR and others can fill us in on this.

Why is Father Gavel still a priest?

How long does it take to oust a priest if they have not been holding up the teachings of the Catholic Church. I don’t understand?

What a terrible scandal!

How is this priest allowed to continue?! God forbid this guy actually hears confessions.

He could move hime out of his parish and give him some adminsterial duties or other some such menial task. Keep him out of the public eye and preaching until such time as he can be removed from the clerical state.

What if he does not want to move? Father Gavel was advised not to take a political post but, went on and did it anyway. The difference with Hans Kung and Father Gavel is that the former obeyed when he was advised to stand down from a post previously held. Father Gavel is different and I truly feel sorry for the Bishop.

Why is Father Gavel a priest?,… never mind still. Why would anyone become a Priest who has the views he has? I don’t get it, call me naive but I would think that anyone who becomes a Priest would know and understand just what The Catholic faith is. This is just so messed up!😦

The Bishop can remove his faculties as a priest. But I don’t know what would happen under Canadian law if a priest were to disobey his Bishop and continue to celebrate Mass in a diocesan church.

If only this priest was alone in his thinking. Unfortunately, there are far too many other priests and nuns who would agree with him. Father James Martin, S.J. is one scary dude. He wrote this:

" Pope Benedict XVI’s comments last week in Fatima, Portugal, in which he stated that abortion and same-sex marriage were “some of today’s most insidious and dangerous threats” to the common good seemed oddly discordant. The equation of abortion, something that clearly is about a threat to life, with same-sex marriage, which no matter how you look at it, does not mean that anyone is going to die, is bizarre. A good friend of mine, who is gay, recently resigned from a position at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, where he said, with great dismay, that “abortionsamesexmarriage” had become one polysyllabic word among some of his bosses.

Why has same-sex marriage been equated with abortion? Are they really equivalent “threats” to life? If you’re looking for a life issue with stakes as high as abortion, why not something that actually threatens life? Like war? Or the death penalty? Or the kind of poverty and destitution that lead to death? Why aren’t “abortion and war” the most “insidious and dangerous” threats to the common good? Or “war and the death penalty”? Or “war and poverty?” The great danger is that this increasingly popular equation will seem to many as having less to do with moral equivalency and more to do with a simple dislike, or even a hatred, of gays and lesbians. "

Then there is the nun who allowed an abortion at her hospital because the baby threatened the life of the mother. And of course, we can’t forget Father Pleger, who said priests should be able to marry and women should be ordained. And the list goes on, and on, and on …

:ouch:

If a priest has been stripped off his faculties to publicly celebrate Mass then he would have no business inside any diocesan Church. Otherwise, would’nt that be trespassing?

No, a priest without faculties still needs to fulfil their Sunday obligation.

right, they can still enter a church and participate in the mass as a lay person, not as a priest or any of the lay ministries

if they excommunicated, they are also barred from communion, but can still hear mass. they can also go to confession, which is usually the first step in getting your excommunication lifted
