We don’t. That is the whole point. We shouldn’t use something for our “mad scientist” research. Many people believe (incorrectly) that many useful medications and surgeries were perfected because of the use of lab rats and other lab animals. That is incorrect.
Please provide specific information instead of a generalized statement. You are trying to implying that all the research an laboratory animals is useless.
For example, the polio vaccine (which many would agree is one of the most important useful vacs out there) was almost rejected because it killed lab rats. Good thing that they decided to use it on CONCENTING folks to determined that it actually works.
You mention one possible case (
almost rejected) out of decades of work in medical and biological research. Do not you think that it is a bit too much of a stretch to make your point?
Anyway, I believe that it is MORALLY wrong to be cruel to living creatures. God gave us dominion over the plants and animals. He didn’t say “use them for your own benefit”,
What does “dominion” means to you?
“abuse them,” etc.
I completely agree with you here!
Like I said, there are going to be many many people on CAF and elsewhere that will disagree with me for this is a Catholic forum not an animal rights forum.
But I think that treating something that is “less” than you in a cruel manner is evil. Regardless of the thing that is “less” than you (unborn baby, eldery, children, animals, etc).
You will not hear any disagreement from Catholics about the fact that cruelty is evil (see
Catholic Encyclopedia) , the main problem that I see is that your definition of cruelty is quite encompassing of any form of suffering.
No cruelty. Plain and simple.
