How can someone call themselves Catholic and then be pro choice? I have a lady friend that says she’s against abortion but is pro choice because she doesn’t think the law should be involved. Huh?

you cannot be “pro-choice” and be Catholic

pure and simple as I can put it, shipmate

let’s stop kidding ourselves

“pro-choice” catholics are traitors who are doing a lot of harm…

wake up & smell the coffee; “pro-choice” “catholics” are very deadly enemies

Yes ignorant people say the darndest things. Well, try to educate her. But do it in a kind way. Don’t simply try to win an argument. And pray for her if nothing else.

I would ask her why she is against abortion. If she responds because it is killing a person, then you can ask her if someone can hold the view that murder is wrong but the government should not intervene.

I’m sure there were people who were personally against slavery too.

I don’t get it either. Maybe it’s ignorance of sacred teachings, maybe it’s because they want want to “think for themselves”, maybe it’s because they misunderstand the horror of abortion…I don’t know.

It’s a tough issue and I understand that it’s complicated. My heart breaks for women and men who have gone though such a horrible thing. But the church is very clear on abortion and I don’t think a Catholic should call themselves pro choice.

why? did i post something offensive?

I don’t know who flagged you. At worst, your rhetoric is unproductive in that post.

She probably thinks it’s a “necessary evil” because women will have abortions even if illegal and she doesn’t want the women to be harmed/killed by their illegal yet autonomous actions.

An elderly Methodist woman once told me she’s pro-choice because she “wants children raised in the BEST possible circumstances.”

The whole personally against abortion thing is just a cop out. It is an attempt to absolve one of moral culpability without doing anything too hard. If you honestly believe that that is a human life being killed, you would want to see it outlawed.

  1. I didn’t flag you
  2. I was offering constructive criticism. Don’t ask questions if there are possible answers you don’t want to hear.
EDIT: 3. forum is not an adjective

And by your rhetoric, personal attacks, and English mistakes, I suspect you are a troll. You act like a perfect caricature of devout Catholics.

Let me remind you of the CAF Rule

“Judgments by the Moderators can be discussed with the Moderators via private messaging but not on the board itself. If you display any disrespect, contention, or hostility towards a Moderator, Administrator or Catholic Answers your account will be suspended. Decisions of the Moderators may be appealed to the Administrator.”

Now I have been suspended for less then you have written here.
Be advised.

I have been suspended 3 times now. I was the first regular. And booted back down to member for goodness knows what.

Know the rules. Fellow forum members flag, not mods.

i think “forum” (in my post) was used as an adverb, not an an adjective;

since this thread has been completely de-railed; we can discuss english grammar

You must be pro-life to be Catholic…But also one needs to know life is from the womb to the tomb…we cannot be only pro-birth…we must sanctify all human life by taking care of children in poverty, looking after the elderly, and protecting all life…which calls for us to be against capital punishment.

which calls for us to be against capital punishment.
the catechism gives a different opinion. it should be rarely used, but it is not banned outright.

a recent killer said he would kill again in prison. do we wait until he does?
The convicted cop killer made headlines during his trial in January when he smiled and went into a profanity-laced rant in court, saying, “I wish I had killed more of the mother-------s,” and promised to “kill more, kill whoever gets in front of me … There’s no need for a f—ing trial."

I’m Pro-Life because I’ve got the heartrending misfortune of having to deal with the fallout of having had an abortion. It’s something I will never get over, and feel I don’t deserve to.

23 years ago, when I was 17 years old and terrified of being a single mother who couldn’t provide a child with a decent life, I told the father of the child I was pregnant. He threw some money at me, told me to 'fix it" and then went away for a week because I’d “stressed” him out. I was young and stupid and not a Christian so I did it.

The compulsory “counselling” session was less than 2 minutes long.

No matter how many times people tell me God will forgive me, I don’t think I’ll ever believe it. I murdered one of his precious children.

Your friend’s disparity arises from the notion that “immoral” and “illegal” are two separate things; as they must be in a society that divides Church from state.

To clarify the idea; consider divorce. Many would consider it morally “bad”, but also would not want to see laws that kept people from getting one.

This isn’t a defense of abortion, for all the devout keyboard warriors waiting to freak out. It’s just an explanation of how that particular paradigm can exist.
