Pro-Life video from rapper Nick Cannon - it's FANTASTIC

I wonder if his “I’m not Pro-life, I’m Pro-Nick” is just a little back pedalling on his part after ruffling the pro-choice feathers. It’s not cool to align yourself with the churchy folks.

I personally find there is a certain credibility in his “Can I Live” message given that he is an imperfect role model, living in and enjoying the attractions of the world. He is not taking a stand on all matters of faith, he is testifying to his joy that his mother chose not to abort him - she chose life.

As a 44 year old, not terribly cool (and getting more uncool by the day ) Catholic mother, I have some influence over my Catholic children, and their Catholic friends. But send this white housewifey church lady into the midst of Nick Cannon’s fans, I doubt I would have any credibility. That the message comes from Nick, at a level they can relate to, imo, this song and video can make a difference, for these young people to care about preserving life, to see that a pregnancy is not just a condition or a complication to your life, but that it is a life at stake.

In the work I have done with youth ministry, I would see no problem with showing the video. I would not say “and this is Nick Cannon, go buy his cd”. Showing the video, imo, is not the same as condoning all his music, or his lifestyle. The discussion of the video would be worth it, imo.

It probably was purely a business move to back peddle away from being Pro-life…Music industry folks don’t want to sway to much to either side because you risk isolating your fan base.

I’m a volunteer youth minister in our parish. Every year around the anniversary of Roe v Wade, I do a fairly intense lesson on abortion. For the past two years, I have used this video as a closing. The teens are reached in a way that no “lesson” can reach them. (And yes, I’m in tears…but perhaps that’s the Mom in me coming out!)

maybe it’s the teens I already minister too that makes the difference. Every group is different and I’m either all the way or no way when I’m presenting abortion, including the music that accompanies my presentation. What I expose them to, like abortion, everything will come from a source I am willing to back. Again, totally my opinion for my kids, so if you use it, then kudos! Every youth group is different, with different needs. It is a great video, I just choose not to use it.

With so much pro-choice agenda in the music industry, I’d rather (and choose) to use the opportunity to promote a Catholic artist with a pro-life message, so that it’s more than just a video and a song. It’s a mission of someone who is also fighting for life. They are totally freaked out and surprised when the person who is rapping is actually off the chain with his lyrics and rapping ability and Catholic. I guess I make an effort to find people that can run with the secular pack (aka: give Nick Cannon competition and in some cases sound SO much BETTER, I mean the chipmunk sound went out of date 5 years ago…) and send a positive message at the same time helping promote life. It’s one big package for me.

If it works for you great!!! It has the same results, right? We actually do an awesome one-man drama who does an amazing job as well.

I hear you on the tears. There is never a dry eye in the house when that happens. But it’s just my opinion. If you can use it, then great. I’m all about using everything the media as a resource. I’m just a stickler when it comes to presenting abortion to my teens. They need to know that there are Catholic hip-hop artists out there, using the talents God gave them, to help defend life and living life in grace.

Because there are way too many Nick Cannons out there who back peddle. They already know that. They need to know it’s possible to use their talents to defend life.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m a bit extreme. But through prayer, I discerned that this is the path for my youth group. Again, every youth group is different and I’m just another perspective on the video. God Bless!
