"Pro-Lifers are Hypocrites"

Of course I also mean that, firing people from working in Catholic organisations, expelling students from Catholic schools & universities, is also hypocrisy.
For the most part I agree. Especially with the expelling students for pregnancies. This happens very frequently. I even asked the principal of a catholic high school a few years ago why a teen girl was expelled from school while the baby’s father was still enrolled. His response was “Her growing belly would cause scandal. It isn’t proven who is the father.” I asked what if she had had an abortion instead? His response was “That would be between her and her confessor.” Made me sick to my stomach.

You mean pregnant women, right?

That sounds horrible.

Totally off topic but…how do you tell if a chicken egg is fertilized or not (obviously I’m a city girl!).

If there is no rooster with your hens, the eggs cannot be fertilized. If you are selling fertilized eggs, you would keep a rooster in with the hens. Roosters are pretty good at taking care of business.

A neighbor of mine raises several rare breeds. He has at least 6 hens and one rooster of each of those breeds. He keeps each breed in separate enclosures. Occasionally he will switch the roosters around to create “designer breed” birds.

I don’t have a need for fertilized eggs so we don’t have any roosters. Just a few hens that’s think they are lap dogs. The lay their eggs, we collect them.

ETA: I used to have turkeys as well. Sweetest hens we ever owned. They would follow us around and loved to be held and petted. If we sat down they would hop on our laps. Their eggs are bigger and are excellent for baking. The taste is similar to chicken eggs and Can be used for anything, even scrambled eggs. Originally we bought the hens for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, but they were such lovely birds we couldn’t “do it” to them. So they lived out their lives happily stealing dog food from our dog.

Thanks…I thought that there was some way you could look at them…or something…to tell the difference! 🤭🤭🤭

Sort of. Once an eggs start to incubate you can check and see if a chick is growing. It’s called “candeling” and basically you just hold the egg to a light. The shells are somewhat opaque and you can see shadowy shapes. If a chick is not growing you should remove the egg from the nest or incubator. The egg will be rotten and if it cracks on the other eggs the chicks can get sick. (Plus it smells horribly and it doesn’t go away) Shells are porous so chicks can get air, but those pores also allow for germs to travel inside. That is how people can get sick from improperly cooked eggs.
