In our church bulletin was a notice that an Archbishop had “approved the request for the relegation to profane status” of a certain church building in the diocese.
What does that mean?
What does that mean?
Right. This is profane in the simple sense of “not sacred,” not profane in the sense of “debased and disgusting.”Thank you for the reply! That makes sense - I (obviously) had no idea what that meant.
*prō fanō *in Latin literally means in front of the temple, which would basically be the streetRight. This is profane in the simple sense of “not sacred,” not profane in the sense of “debased and disgusting.”
It means to convert property from sacred to secular use.
Can. 1222 §1. If a church cannot be used in any way for divine worship and there is no possibility of repairing it, the diocesan bishop can relegate it to profane but not sordid use.
§2. Where other grave causes suggest that a church no longer be used for divine worship, the diocesan bishop, after having heard the presbyteral council, can relegate it to profane but not sordid use, with the consent of those who legitimately claim rights for themselves in the church and provided that the good of souls suffers no detriment thereby.
Cool. So would this be the same meaning such as*prō fanō *in Latin literally means in front of the temple, which would basically be the street
How interesting, I’d never thought about it.*prō fanō *in Latin literally means in front of the temple, which would basically be the street
