In our church bulletin was a notice that an Archbishop had “approved the request for the relegation to profane status” of a certain church building in the diocese.

What does that mean?

It means to convert property from sacred to secular use.

Can. 1222 §1. If a church cannot be used in any way for divine worship and there is no possibility of repairing it, the diocesan bishop can relegate it to profane but not sordid use.

§2. Where other grave causes suggest that a church no longer be used for divine worship, the diocesan bishop, after having heard the presbyteral council, can relegate it to profane but not sordid use, with the consent of those who legitimately claim rights for themselves in the church and provided that the good of souls suffers no detriment thereby.

Thank you for the reply! That makes sense - I (obviously) had no idea what that meant.

Right. This is profane in the simple sense of “not sacred,” not profane in the sense of “debased and disgusting.”

*prō fanō *in Latin literally means in front of the temple, which would basically be the street

Cool. So would this be the same meaning such as

“However, special care should be taken to ensure that the host is consumed by the communicant in the presence of the minister, so that no one goes away carrying the Eucharistic species in his hand. If there is a risk of profanation, then Holy Communion should not be given in the hand to the faithful.”
