It appears that not everyone agrees. I do not think I do, even though I do not like projectors. Reading the context, it seems like it was dealing more with noise disruption. …I think the ultimate point for me, is that a focus on such questionable issues is a distraction from more important liturgical abuse. I do not think I would complain about it, but save any complaints for when they sing Wind Beneath My Wings for an offertory.
While I quoted only part of this post, my comment here sort of addresses benedictgal and Cat as well.
I will try to say this one more time, as I think I have not succeeded well in communicating.
#1 - I think the idea is scarier than the reality. Most of the negative responses here seemed to be (understandably) from those who have experienced either not a good (imperfect storm) situation with regard to projected music during Mass, or (most likely) have not experienced it at all. Again, I am an anti-modernist, overall. The first time I saw the projector, I thought,
Wait, No Way! This will destroy the liturgy, affect people’s concentration, be unprayerful, introduce high-tech into an ancient setting (etc.) Then when I saw what a profoundly positive change it made in the quiet and focus at Mass, I saw its value. It focused people on The Presence, on the silence, on the priest’s activity instead of their own “activity.” It continues to be the quietest, most reflective Mass, when I do have a chance to attend it.
#2 - My guess is that, just as our bishop knows full well what goes on in this church, so, too other bishops do, in theirs. I don’t know how it works in those other parishes & dioceses, what the bishops hear about those screens (could make a big difference in whether bishops choose to act on whatever new or old documents say about the practice). As you folks know, bishops don’t act on every complaint or controversy; they have not the time; and…
#3 - They, like us, have to pick their battles. If I did have a problem with this particular well-done projector in this particular church (I don’t know why I would, when I see the outcome of it), it would be less of an issue for me than…
(a) the scarcity of confession times in most churches
(b) the lack of access to churches to pray outside of Mass times
(c) the inadequate catechesis still dominating in most parishes
(d) the bad, uninspiring music in most of the churches without projectors
(e) the closing of Catholic schools
(f ) lay preaching
etc.
