I’m curious: what do folks think will be the long-term implications for Catholic institutions in Hong Kong, due to increasing manipulation by the mainland Chinese government? Catholics in HK are few in number, but fervent.

This is an easy one to answer. The Chinese are taking a long-term approach in assimilating these territories that have been occupied by others. Hong Kong is part of China, and the Catholic Church in Hong Kong will eventually look like the Catholic Church in mainland China. The Chinese do not trust outsiders, and certainly do not like organizations where the head of that organization is considered superior in authority to the Chinese government.
