“The crux of our worry is that the faithful are going to become very disenchanted and stop going to church because they don’t like the message, and the message is not the way they lead their lives,” Nibbi said.
I think this is the most revealing statement about this movement against the Archbishop. They don’t want a Church, they want a cheerleading camp.

The sad fact is, I’m not the least bit surprised by the reaction by Catholics to Archbishop Cordileone. I seem to remember a similar reaction to Sister Jane Dominic Laurel. Remember her? She’s the Dominican nun who got lambasted for the presentation she made to Catholic students at Charlotte Catholic High School in North Carolina. You can read about that story here. The presentation on human sexuality was based on Pope John Paul II’s “theology of the body.” She has a doctorate in sacred theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. The students and faculty were outraged. .They too launched an online petition. The subject matter that she was discussing?..you probably already guessed it! Fr. Z defended her here .

Peace, Mark
It was ever thus when an obedient servant of God brings a message of correction.
The story of Stephen, the first Christian martyr after Jesus:
**Acts 7:47 **"… Solomon built a house for him.
48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says:
49 'The heavens are my throne, the earth is my footstool. What kind of house can you build for me? says the Lord, or what is to be my resting place?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’
51 "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always oppose the holy Spirit; you are just like your ancestors.
52 Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They put to death those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.
53 You received the law as transmitted by angels, but you did not observe it."
54 When they heard this, they were infuriated, and they ground their teeth at him.
55 But he, filled with the holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
56 and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
57 But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears, and rushed upon him together.
58 They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.

This ad is blatantly dishonest.

It reads, “Upon threat of losing their jobs, he coerces educators and staff in our Catholic high schools to accept a morality code which violates individual consciences as well as California labor laws.” And later, “The absolute mean-spiritedness of his required language for the Archdiocese high school faculty handbook sets a pastoral tone that is closer to persecution than evangelization.”

So here’s the language of the original letter by the Archbishop:

“At the outset, though, I wish to state clearly and emphatically that the intention underlying this document is not to target for dismissal from our schools any teachers, singly or collectively … This is a statement made on behalf of the institution, not all individuals in the institutions. Our Catholic high schools try to hire people who do believe what the Church teaches, but in our schools we have good teachers who belong to other Christian faiths or to no faith at all. They are members of the school community. The language “affirm and believe” acknowledges the good activity of the entire corps of faculty and staff by making this claim on behalf of the institution. That is, in the first instance, “affirm and believe” refers to the Catholic high school itself, and, secondly, to many faculty who identify with the Catholic teachings behind which the high school as a whole stands.”

Also, from the Q&A published for the teachers: “[T]he point of the CBA is not to require assent to any of the teachings of the Catholic Church. But it will, as it has for years, ask teachers as a matter of professional obligation to honor the Catholic identity and mission of our schools, which is now more clearly stated in the teacher handbooks. If they cannot do so in their beliefs, then they should at least avoid publicly undermining the lessons taught at the school of their employment.”

Oh yeah. That’s some mean spirited persecution/coercion. :dts:

I hope this opens the eyes of some bishops around the country. The Church of Nice does NOT like it when you preach Catholic teaching. The time for playing sweet with the enemies of the Church is over. Like Jesus said, He came not bring unity, but to divide. The Gospel divides, because it declares truth, and man does not like truth.

I would love to see bishops around the country come to the support of the Archbishop and stand up for Catholic teaching.

Ignore them.

Also, I wonder if this is grounds for refusing them Communion? :hmm:

Join me in prayers that Pope Francis will publicly support Archbishop Cordileone as he should. This newspaper ad reminds me of the full page ad that Clergy did in 1968 condemning Humanae Vitae.
Yes, I do pray that Pope Francis will hold here. This is pressure, encroachment. It is happening a lot of different ways inside and outside of the Church. A very defining moment for Catholics. How far will you go to defend the Church; what does it really mean to you. The rubber is hitting the road in Christianville. 😉

I don’t have even the slightest shred of doubt that the Holy Father will ignore this awful plea.

The critics are being ridiculous, and anyone who spends any time reading the Archbishop’s statements can see that he’s coming from a place of love.

Glad to hear it. I don’t see Francis as a wilting flower kind of guy. I believe he defends the Church, regardless of the cost. I am sorry to say I know exactly what is happening to Cordileone. Hatchet job.

I doubt that the Holy Father reads the San Francisco Chronicle. It’s just another pressure group trying to get its way.

On a local level though, these campaigns are very effective. Remember the Salem witch trials? 😉

“Holy Father, please provide us with a leader true to our values and your namesake.”

Here’s hoping Francis responds to them, “Whether or not Cordileone is true to your values, he is true to those of Catholicism.”

“The crux of our worry is that the faithful are going to become very disenchanted and stop going to church because they don’t like the message, and the message is not the way they lead their lives,” Nibbi said."

Yes, and that’s exactly why Archbp Cordileone is doing this. The irony of Nibbi’s statement is staggering.

Interesting, they are expressing their distaste of division and intolerance by being divisive and intolerant
:rotfl:

This is how it ALWAYS is with Western progressive causes somewhere down the line…

Pick your issue–global warming, so-called gay “marriage”, contraception, abortion, euthanasia, religious freedom, welfare.

One disagrees, one is ignorant, uneducated, a cave man, a racist, bigot, homophobe, backwards, and just has to be an old white male misogynist bent on controlling women and their bodies ready to throw grandma off the cliff with a hatred of the poor.:mad:

😃

I have two views on this:
Code:
 1. Papa Francis woild have never assigned AB Cordeleone to SF.

 2. Papa Francis will not move the AB.

Archdiocese of San Francisco:
Regarding the paid advertisement in the San Francisco Chronicle slated for publication April 16th, the Archdiocese of San Francisco responds:
The advertisement is a misrepresentation of Catholic teaching, a misrepresentation of the nature of the teacher contract, and a misrepresentation of the spirit of the Archbishop. The greatest misrepresentation of all is that the signers presume to speak for “the Catholic Community of San Francisco.” They do not.
The Archdiocese has met with a broad range of stakeholders. Together, we have engaged in a constructive dialogue on all of the issues raised in this ad. We welcome the chance to continue that discussion.

Why do you believe the first point? Archbishop Cordileone is very loving and pastoral. Cut throught the image of him portrayed by the secular media, and just listen to his actual words. He actually sounds an awful lot like the Holy Father.
