When I was maybe fifteen or sixteen (I’m in my early twenties now), I remember making a promise to God while I was in Adoration that I would do whatever His will was. By “His will” I did not just mean doing what was right and avoiding what was wrong, but whatever I thought He specifically wanted me to do in regards to any circumstance. That’s really all I remember about the making of the promise and what was going through my mind at the time.

I had since forgotten about the promise for years, so I have been living with it in mind, but I’ve recently remembered it and I am rather frustrated with myself for having ever made it since it would seem I have possibly morally bound myself to a great number of things which would not ordinarily be a matter of obligation.

Am I obligated to keep this promise?

Go discuss this with your pastor …even if you did bind yourself…he has the authority to dispense such. Then you will have complete certainty…

and of course still seek to do Gods will …to follow Christ …as I imagine you do.

I was actually thinking of discussing it with him, as I’ve heard this before. I was wondering, is this something from canon law, or just common Catholic wisdom, so to speak?

Keep your promise to God. The Lord takes every promise seriously. Ask Him to help you with keeping your promise.

And confess to your forgetting.

Canon law 🙂 (your actual canonical pastor not just any priest …unless the Bishop has delegated others in your diocese this facility)

Again I would discuss this with your Pastor and have him dispense you from any that may bind you…then you will have certainty.

Some promises are more “devotional” language…and some are binding…

There is no point in trying to necessarily sort it all out from when you were 15-16.
