Promote LGBT to teens or be sacked?

Good point. But isn’t it also a little short-sighted or plain ignorant not to recognize there is a religious component as well as a human-rights issue involved?

There is no MS pride month, or breast cancer pride month or bipolar pride month… the get “xxx awareness” months. The purpose of raising the awareness being to raise interest and money for further research to find the root cause and possibly one day correct the defect.
All the things you listed can be pretty serious and disabling diseases or disorders. Cancer can kill someone and MS can leave them unable to walk and with impaired vision. Bipolar Disorder can cause crippling depression and psychosis. Triple X syndrome can cause learning disabilities, delayed development of speech and language skills, etc.

People who are gay, on the other hand, can lead relatively normal and successful lives. Homosexuality does not cause any significant impairment in a person’s ability to function. That’s one of the reasons that homosexuality is no longer a mental disorder in the DSM.

It would take a very clever lawyer to make that case. While I believe people of faith who are opposed to LGBT promotion in school should have their rights respected as well (those of the OP in this instance), making a case to promote a specific religion in a secular school is a shaky analogy because other religions ought to have equal time and also because the promotion of religion in general is problematic in such a setting.

Which is why I suggested approaching it from a logical rather than religious angle.

Yes, the diseases I mentioned have a much more pronounced “visible” impact on the people who suffer them. Remember, we are discussing this on a Catholic forum. Acting out LGBT can be much worse for people in the long run than these diseases from an eternal perspective. Non religious may not accept the religious objections, so I was trying to argue from a logical position.

Let me ask you… What if “we” are wrong about not reaching out to these people and trying to uncover the underlying issue? Can you say that if you knew there was an answer for how to correct the reproductive system for these people so they could be attracted to the opposite sex and create a family you wouldn’t support it? Are you saying we shouldn’t even look for it?

Well I do believe that in at least some schools of Islam a man is permitted more than one wife, divorce is simply declared and there is no limit to remarriage. Islam does agree with Catholicism on same sex practice being wrong though it’s response can be less compassionate.

Fair enough - if you inform about one ethical point of view - you must inform about all of them.

The ‘secular’ ethical point of view - that approves liberal sexual practice is also just another point of view. The fact that theism is not part of it does not make it somehow ‘objective’, ‘neutral’ or ‘true’.

Just putting forward the ‘secular liberal’ viewpoint is siding with one set of beliefs - no more valid per sae than another set. It is discriminatory against those that hold opposing ethical views - be they religious or not. Secular schools say they respect a wide range of beliefs and there is no one absolutely right point of view. Lots of Muslims where I work do not agree with same sex practice for example. How are they served?

Catholic sexual ethics can be argued and held without reference to God.

I sometimes wonder what secular liberal beliefs are based on apart from “most people in the West now think that…” or “I don’t want to seem backward”. What evidence of greater social good or happiness is there following their adoption for example?

I’ve very sorry that you’re in this situation.
It’s awful that for all the tolerance that is preached there is no tolerance for people who hold a “negative view” on same sex relationships.
It has become the same way here in Australia in the main cities and if a person doesn’t agree with it they are condemned as a bigot, homophobic, outdated and as being not loving.
With the current mindset,I don’t know if there is anything you can do.
It’s a tragedy because people are not addressing the “elephants in the room”.
Ie:the reality is that many men who identify as gay have been sexually abused by males as children.

I’m not suggesting that’s the cause for all of same sex attraction, but there is a good number of gay men that have experienced this and no one is making the connection ironically (or are too ashamed or no one dares to have the courage to).
This would possibly also explain the tendency for some gay men to have high risk taking sexual behaviour (many partners) as being sexually abused as a child dramatically effects the individual later even if they themselves don’t make the connection.

Do you normally have a good relationship with your boss, or is it already on shaky ground? This type of context means everything. If you’re normally a valued employee, there’s a stronger chance that your employer will work with your concerns and reach a compromise.

One thought - rather than make a big cheer-leading political statement, as it sounds like you’re being asked to do, could you work on the theme of LGBTQ resources? For example, there’s a high suicide rate among these teens, so providing books on this theme and perhaps an author visit from a mental health professional could be a reasonable and even life-saving option.

Also, the Catholic Church does oppose any stigma and bigotry directed at LGBTQ people. Could you provide resources on what their rights are in school and the workplace, perhaps inviting a lawyer to come speak on the topic? Could you provide brochures with information on HIV/AIDS, local support groups, etc.?

It seems like it may be a premature leap to quit your job when other options may be available that accommodate your faith.
