proof about negative views on Harry Potter

Why? Did people here help write the books? What’s the point? It seems a silly waste of time.

Actually we don’t. I’m not even a super fan of Harry Potter. I’m just a regular fan who has a broader selection of favorite fantasy works.

It’s not so much about Harry Potter itself but the virulent and slanderous/libelous attacks against not just the books but the entire genre it belongs, the fans of said genre, and those striving to make a career writing for that same genre.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these people start attacking my name and my work next when it becomes my turn to be a famous fantasy author.
But, again, who cares? The books have success beyond nearly any other thing in print.

J.K. Rowling is a human being. I’m a human being. It’s not a matter of success. We both still have a dignity that deserves to be free from being lied about, free from slander/libel, and free from downright defamation. Read the 9th Commandment.

Most of what people say are opinions. You act like the faith is being attacked.

Here is a youtube video, Letter from ex-witch regarding Harry Potter…
I was curious to know what an ex-witch, now Christian, might have to say.

On more than one occasion (and on other threads) I’ve recommended a great book for Catholic families to read about HP. The concern over then Cardinal Ratzinger’s personal reply and Michael O’Brien’s take on HP are even addressed, along with understanding that the “witchcraft” in Harry Potter has NOTHING to do with real “witchcraft”, aka Wicca!!

It’s called "The Mystery of Harry Potter: A Catholic Family Guide " and is authored by Nancy Carpentier Brown, a Catholic homeschooling mom who also wrote the Father Brown Readers from Catholic Heritage Curricula (homeschool curriculum provider).

For any Catholic that has concerns about HP, the book gives a balanced and hysteria-free look at HP and how to discern if it’s a good choice for your family and your children. I’m sure there are people out there who have read it and still think HP’s not a good choice for their family, but it gives a Catholic view of the series ( and the movies that were out when it was published) so that parents can make an educated choice for their own families.

Here’s a link to OSV’s page (they publish it, although it’s available via many online sources) osv.com/BooksNav/TheMysteryofHarryPotter/tabid/3880/Default.aspx

Exactly. The books are FICTION and people have OPINIONS about them.

Plenty of people disagree with my opinions (and that’s fine, they’re entitled to their own!) but that doesn’t mean that I’m attacking ‘truth’ by giving my opinion! Aren’t we all entitled to have opinions about fictional works and not be accused of LYING, defamation, and other evil actions if our opinions don’t happen to agree lockstep with others?

Slander is not an opinion and you know it.

Quit trying to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I couldn’t care less about how many literary flaws you see in Harry Potter. Heck, I myself make fun of fantasy cliches and archetypes on occasion. That’s a far cry from accusing me of promoting witchcraft, moral relativism, the occult, and all other accusatory statements brought from by the likes of self-proclaimed ex-witches and ‘Bible-believing’ Christians.

I hope you don’t mind me using your post as an example of my point.
Book 6 and book 7 I basically read not from desire to follow along with the characters but to see if somewhere, some how, J.K. would get back the ‘original vision’ she had (she acknowledges that she changed the books around in major ways due to either (name removed by moderator)ut from the fans which she liked ‘better’, or in finding out that the fans had figured out what she was planning for the next book, and deciding that it would play better to ‘change’.
This is the sort of criticism that can be validly called an opinion. You’re entitled to it and in fact, you raise some good points. I discuss in a similar manner in other boards pertaining to manga and fantasy games. We discuss our perspectives, propose theories, point out flaws etc.

All of this however just can’t be compared to this statement from the so-called ‘ex-witch’
These four books by J.K. Rowling teach witchcraft!
It’s short, stupid, but most of all downright defamatory. You’re accusing an author of penning books that teach witchcraft. Heck, forget Rowling. Replace her name with Tolkien or mine. You’ll still be accused of slander. It’s gone beyond books and into personal attacks.

Those are all opinions…not slander. 🤷

Uh yes they are. If you were a BBQ stand and I started yelling that your meat contains aborted fetus cells. Following your logic, that would be just my ‘opinion’ and not slander.

You are aware that those are coming from a log of Faith?

Before we continue on, might I remind people that ONE person --Loyal Views–linked to a WEB SITE article. It was the WEB SITE ARTICLE which apparently contained some slanderous views. . .and Loyal Views acknowledged being ‘half-asleep’ when posting and also only linked because of being curious about what a self-professed witch might have to say.

NOBODY HERE on the thread so far has said ANYTHING derogatory or slanderous about Ms. Rowling or her works. At all. And the one person who posted a link to the WEB SITE which did apparently say such things did not support what was said personally OR say anything derogatory on this thread. about Ms Rowling.

And that’s the reason that I at least, and probably others, have been puzzled at the charges of ‘defamation’ and ‘slander’. . .because there has been nothing said on this thread of that nature, except through a ‘link’ which people don’t even have to look at!
