Go to any Anglican or Lutheran church. Go to a Mennonite church. Go to a Methodist church and they won’t be kneeling, but they will be praying in “quiet holiness.” I attend a Foursquare church (pentecostal/charismatic) and I have seen people praying in “quiet holiness” though not necessarily on their knees. Television, televangelists, etc. are not accurate representations of all Protestant denominations/practices, nor should they be taken to be that!Just turn on any Protestant channel on television and see them jumping all over the place, clapping and ranting about how you can be saved. That’s how I know. I have never ever seen Protestants in quiet holiness praying on their knees. It’s always been like an assembly or something. Like an auditorium.
One needs to be careful when generalizing…
Simply because one AoG group claims it is required, does not mean all strains of AoG claim it as required for salvation.
Likewise, there are some evangelicals that claim if you don’t believe in PreTrib Rapture, pre-millennialism, you can’t be a Christian. Other Evangelicals point at these people and laugh…
**Burg:
You are wrong on both of the accounts above again. Please get your facts straight before telling us what we believe.**
Sorry if I misread you but there is NO AOG that say’s you have to speak in tongues to be saved.???
Actually I was defending you guys from blanket statement…
If you read what i said… I said SOME teach it, others don’t, and that you can’t generalize because some here and there teach something as “Required”. Sometimes those onesies twosies churches aren’t even in agreement with the over all denomination…
I’m curious how you can say my statement is false a I was basically saying for other NOT to tell you guys what you believe.
In Christ
I don’t know. You know when you have a gut feeling that something is wrong but cannot put your finger on it? You feel like bolting out the door and it was only during the part where people spoke in tongues. I don’t know if it was because I was just not used to it. I went back once more to see if I had the same gut feeling and no. I was fine the second time. This type of manifestations also exists among Catholics, at least in France, I don’t know in the USA : they belong to Catholic charismatic movements that are recognized by the Vatican …
so why does it bother you when it’s “Pentecostal” ( charismatic Protestants we could say ) and not when it’s Catholic ? I don’t see any difference ( I don’t belong to this trend )
The gut is flesh. My first Mass wasn’t good on my gut either but refreshing to the spirit. It never feels good to not understand.I don’t know. Perhaps TV isn’t the best example. I watch so called christian TV for comedy for the most part.Just turn on any Protestant channel on television and see them jumping all over the place, clapping and ranting about how you can be saved. I’ve been to Pentecostal services too and I usually feel fine although they are a bit “noisier” than where I usually go to, but I think I wouldn’t feel fine in groups where people fall to the ground, giggle or even bark and so on, you know, the “Toronto blessing” type of things … French Pentecostals don’t agree with this either ( at least the members of the groupe called “Assemblies of God” … )I don’t know. Being involved with Catholic Charismatics for eight years and even teaching in St. Monica’s parish in E. Peoria, Ill. I have been in Catholic meetings that do the same thing as you describe aboveI have been to a number of pentacostal/charismatic type meetings. There always seemed to come a time when everyone was praying out loud at the same time in tongues, at many of these meetings. Sometimes it happened repeatedly everytime someone called for prayer for this thing or that. There is no doubt that no one knew what was being said by anyone. Whatever they all were saying all at once meant nothing to anyone present, but they all seemed to enjoy doing this. No one there did or could interpret any of it, raising the question of Paul’s admonition. Assuming a person did supernaturally receive a gift and uttered something he did not understand in Greek or Chinese to another person who did not understand what he heard, how does that edifiy anyone? Multiply that by fifty or a hundred people all doing it simultaneously. It seems to me that this more reflects what happened at the Tower of Babel where the people’s languages got confused and they could not understand one another as a punishment. When I heard people at these meetings burst into tongues that is what I thought. These folks are babelling. When I asked some of them about no one understanding what was being said, I was told that God understands and they were praying to God. So they were praying things to God that they had no idea what they were, but God did. I thought God surely understands English so why not tell him what you want to say so you know what you are saying to him and everyone around you can understand as well? When I asked them about Paul forbidding tongues in an assembly unless there was an interpretation they simply dismissed it. At these same meetings there were individuals and ministers who claimed that God gave them prophesies to tell the people. Most of it was nothing new, nothing that we would not hear repeated in scripture, but some of it was pretty specific regarding things God was going to do and instructions as to what the people were to do to prepare. None of it ever happened. It was all clearly bogus. This did not seem to phase anyone. They all persisted in the same behavior. I had a dear friend who had a bad stroke. His pentacostal friends came to visit and prayed over him in tongues and claimed miracles and healing for him and prophesied he would get well. He died eventually, after several years of slow painful decline. There are most definitely miracles. I have seen them. But the people who came to his room and made a big noisy racket reminded me of the priests of baal, and they got the same results. These folks were also virulently anti-Catholic. What I do not understand is that if they claim God told them my friend would be restored to health and his family, and instead he died, why do they keep doing this? If God said my friend would be restored to health it would have happened. These people are phonies and carrying it all on in the name of God and they have no hesitation about it. My dad had a friend at work who was a diabetic. He was told he was healed at a Pentacostal meeting and no longer needed insulin. A few days later he was found dead. This does not even phase these people. They keep at it and blamed the poor man for not having enough faith. They may have good intentions, but they are truly deceived in their religious beliefs.
HiNancy
Praying and speaking in tongue are two different gifts. Praying in tongue is what Paul says in Rom 8:26. We do not know how to pray and the Holy Spirit helps us in groan, words that we cannot understand.…

We do not necessary need people to understand personal prayer. Isn’t prayers and intentions come from the hearts and that Gods understand them? Praying in tongue where people cannot understand it does not conflict with the basic principle of prayers. In any case, nobody is forced to pray in tongue. It’s for those who find it a helpful gift and helps them in praying.…
