Seek God and get the things (gifts) as a bonus.
Your first point is right. Your second point is wrong.
We always seek God first and above everything else.
A charismatic gift is not a bonus. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit given as God pleases. It comes with responsibility. When the apostle Peter got the gift of healing (people were healed even when his shadow passed them), he had to live it out and served the people. It is for the upbuilding of the church. It is a supernatural talent. The more gifts you’re given the more is expected of you. The gift should never be for personal glory or for Benny Hinn phenomenum. Refer the parable of the talent.
Like I said, do not despise the gift. Take what is good and discard what is not from God.
Discernment is a gift too. One who has it can discern whether the prophecy comes from the Holy Spirit, or from the human spirit or from Satan. Not everybdoy has the gift of discernment. That’s why prophecy must be discerned before it can be proclaimed. You need other mature Christians to work together with you. These things are Biblical. See 1 Cor 12. Unless you tell me they are not Biblical, you cannot simply just brush it like that. But if you feel they are not Biblical, please offer suggestion why.
Look like you had bad experience with people associated with this kind of thing but it does not mean that the word of God is wrong. You really need to explore it more because there is much more than just being bogus. We are not interested in things bogus but true word of God. And remember you are not forced to believe in anything you don’t want to. But to dismiss things that have solid Biblical foundation would make you look very ignorant.
I responded to your earlier post just to give brief insight to this subject. Please ignore them if you don’t like what I said.
Why the gifts were not prevalence after the early Christians? The answer is because people do not believe. After the first Christians experience there seemed to be dearth of charismatic gifts. Until St Augustine, who was a Bishop then discovered it. A sick lady came to him and asked him to prayed over her. Being Bishop he was obliged and prayed over her and to his surprised she got well. He realized then that the charismatic gifts were for all times, not just after Pentecost to start the church. The church needs the gifts for its growth.
But don’t take my word for this. Whatever that makes you become good Christian is good for you. Gift is secondary but growing in holiness is of foremeost importance. If you already achieved that, then that is all to it. For others though, sometimes they are helped by ministry and by empowerment of the Holy Spirit to encourage them to be more loving, love God, love prayer, love the Word and love people.
Peace to you and may Jesus bless.
Reuben.
