Are you pro-gay marriage? Nothing you have said here has anything to do with accepting the redefinition of marriage. Are Eastern Orthodox in favor of accepting state recognition of gay marriage?

This issue has lead me to a constitutional question. If, as we are told by secularists, the Constitution sets up a wall of separation between church and state, why is the government even involved in sanctioning marriage, clearly and historically a religious rite or sacrament, in the first place?
Perhaps our efforts as people of faith should be not through legislation to “protect” marriage, but instead through the courts to liberate marriage from government on first ammendment grounds.

Just an idea.

Catholic charities in Massachussetts, where gay marriage is legal, had to stop putting up children for adoption because they would have to place their children in gay households.

The biggest issue to me is that our rights to defend traditional marriage will be seriously compromised if this does not pass.

It will be discriminatory to advocate marriage between a man and woman, gay marriage will be taught in health classes in schools etc.

Some think that this will force churches to perform gay marriages or face the loss of tax-exempt charitable status because of “discrimination”.

You are right that it is a freedom of religion issue really

As an update, Connecticut just legalized gay marriage. It is clear that government will not protect marriage. In fact government will destroy it, if you don’t challenge under the first amendment’s church/state distinctions. How long will it be before Christian churches are charged with discrimination if they don’t offer marriage to gays?

That is exactly the fear here in California-- and it has already happened in Canada and Europe. We could be forced between deciding to marry gays (which won’t happen) and losing tax exempt status.

I’m not convicting anyone. My point is that marriage is a religious event, whether you consider it a sacrament or a rite. Marriage is not, and according to the first amendment limit on governmental interference with religion, should not be in the sphere of government influence.

Government does have the power to establish “domestic partnership” arrangements, so that gay couples have secular rights within the society - tax rights, visitation on hospitals, pensions, etc.

My nephew is gay, and he should have the same access to the rights and laws of the secular society as anyone else. Marriage, on the other hand, is a religious rite, and according to my church’s teaching, is reserved for a man and a woman.

It is neither. Scripture does not teach that gays are bad, or at least no worse than the rest of us. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
But scripture does clearly teach that sexual activity outside the bonds of marriage are wrong. “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”

I love my nephew as I do all of my other nieces and nephews. And I am not “against” gays, anymore than I am against others who sin (all of us).

There are those in this country - People For the American Way, the ACLU, and other “separation of church and state” groups, that are militant in keeping religion out of the public square. They should be siding with me on this issue, though I’m sure they wouldn’t. I’m just saying keep the state out of the clearly religious practice of marriage.

Do you believe that the church should be required, under anti-discrimination laws, to perform gay marriages? Should my church, which has only male clergy, be required by labor laws to ordain women? Should the Catholic Church be required to ordain women, married individuals, or openly gay individuals?
