How does the church violate these in relation to what we’ve been talking about?

You know I’ve heard this “but allowing gay marriage will force churches to perform gay marriages at pain of losing tax exemption” argument quite a few times at the water cooler yet when prompted to provide some citation NOBODY has done so.

To the contrary, I’ve been shown by numerous other folks both in legal mandates and the CA constitution itself that religious organizations (along with self-contractors in business) are exempt from obligation in performing and/or rendering services for a gay marriage.

So please, show me where in California churches have been forced to do anything against their moral will?

As a former Mormon, I know the LDS church has never been sued for not rendering marriage services to non-Mormons in their Temples (let alone granting access to the Temple itself to non-Mormons) and seeing as laws against religious discrimination are much much much older than laws against sexual orientation discrimination, I’m highly skeptical of any claim stating that first amendment rights to free exercise will be limited (or even abolished) if gay marriage is legally recognized.

Are they forced NOW to perform marriages they do not find acceptable? Like say… a divorced man or woman who wants to be married sacramentally in the Catholic church? If there is no nullity of marriage decreed is the church forced to perform the marriage anyways? Religious institutions do not have to perform religious ceremonies for those whom they deem 'unworthy" or that there is some ‘impediment’ for having it done so.

It would be like saying the government could force the Catholic church to accept a Mormon baptism…why would they force the Catholic church…or any church for that matter to perform a religious rite for someone who doesn’t meet their religious requirements?

To claim the government will “force” churches to perform “gay marriages” is pure fearmongering…and simply untrue.

How do we know if they are interested or not if we don’t try. In the end they may, of course, accept or reject.

How about the right to free association? If you disapprove of their
stance on marriage, don’t be a member. They won’t allow me to receive the Eucharist in their parishes, either. Do I have a right to dictate their doctrine on any of their sacraments? Certainly not!
If I want to receive the Eucharist in a Catholic Church, I must accept their teachings and join. Same with a Catholic who wants to receive in my Church.
