It sounds to me like you are ready to talk with a Catholic Priest about your faith. He can answer your questions and offer you guidance.

I’d recommend making an appointment with a Priest and be open and honest with him. The Holy Spirit will put the right words in your mouth if you ask Him. If that priest isn’t the right one for you, try another. He can help you peal back the layers of confusion in your mind.

+++If by a hellacious lifestyle you mean a sinful lifestyle you are right on the money as all heresies are by definition rebellion against God, his authority vested in the Catholic Church and the Gospel entrusted to his Church. People have always wanted to rebel against the Church’s authority in order to rationalize a sinful lifestyle which is opposed to Jesus’ teachings found in the Gospel. Question is, though, what is this Gospel that Jesus commissioned the Apostles in Mk 16:15-16 to preach? This preached Gospel leads to either salvation or condemnation based on each hearer’s response. So where is this Gospel, which is the oral word of God, the Apostles preached beginning in 33AD ? Is it in the bible? No, as nowhere does the New Testament identify this oral word of God which took three years for the Apostles to learn from Jesus. Not even to mention the fact the first book of the NT was not written for (approximately) 10 years after the Ascension and the bible’s canont was not determined by the Church until 390 years later.

This oral word of God is known as Apostolic Tradition. This part of the Gospel (the other being the written word of God or Sacred Scripture) was handed down by the Apostles’ spoken word, their example and the institutions they established. Its current expression can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. That is why it is heresy to say the bible alone is the source of Christianity as no one knew what the books of the bible were until 420 AD or so. Christianity comes from the Apostles who learned the oral word of God directly from God - Jesus. It does not come from one’s personal guesswork on bible verses. Much of the oral word of God can be found in the bible but these two words of God are distinct as they have separate purposes.

Consider what Jesus states, “not all who Call Me Lord, Lord, will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven…”

This is our quest… is it to seek Jesus at His terms or ours?

I think the first recorded heresy is Adam’s Original sin. He listened to the voice of his wife.
 
Are you saying that the death of Jesus on the cross is not enough to save us?

A very good reference book is Dissent from the Creed by Fr. Richard Hogan. It encapsulates all of the major (and a few minor) heresies since the earliest Church. We hear all of these terms thrown about, like Pelageanism, Nestorianism etc. but this book will inform you as to where they went wrong. Highly recommended.

And heretics are those who have known the true faith and apostatize. That is rare today - but the reformation was chock full of them.

I’m saying that claiming to believe in Jesus is not enough:

Now the passage I was looking for is the one found in St. James:
19 Thou believest that there is one God. Thou dost well: the devils also believe and tremble. (St. James 2)

When we search Scriptures is easy to come away with the simplistic view of “believe” and “be saved.”

However, is that Jesus’ Teaching?:
15 If you love me, keep my commandments. (St. John 14)
3 Now you are clean by reason of the word, which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine: you the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for without me you can do nothing. 6 If any one abide not in me, he shall be cast forth as a branch, and shall wither, and they shall gather him up, and cast him into the fire, and he burneth. (St. John 15)

So clearly, the qualifier is not a simple: ‘I believe, therefore I am Saved/have gained a contractual obligation from God to Save me.’
