How To Pray The Protestant Rosary

I have come across some sites on the internet about Protestants/Christians using the rosary. Some sites evacuate the Catholic rosary and some a version of a christian rosary. I have read several book of this subject. Some of the books I Have read on the rosary were, ‘The Narrative Rosary’ by Charles M. Urban Sr.M.S ED.,‘The Rosary A Journey To The Beloved’ by Gary Jansen, 'The Jesus Prayer Rosary Bible Meditations For Praying WIth Beads" by Michael Cleary SVD and 'A Ladder from Earth To Heaven M K Fields". I have read all these books about this subject. There are many many more books on this subject on this.This is just a small sampling of the books out there on this subject. I have read and heard that some protestants are using the rosary. I am one of them. I try to pray the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet every day. I will write on the Divine Mercy Chaplet later. I want to write down how I pray this. First I want to write down the prayers then map out how I use a rosary.

Prayers

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,the Maker of heaven and earth,and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;He descended into hell.The third day He arose again from the dead;He ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body;and the life everlasting.

Hail Mary:

Hail Mary, full of grace.Our Lord is with you.Blessed are you among women,and blessed is the fruit of your womb,Jesus.Holy Mary, Mother of God,pray for us sinners,now and at the hour of our death.Amen.

Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.Thy Kingdom come,thy will be done,on earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread.And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Jesus Prayer:

Jesus, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner.

O My Jesus:

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fire of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are in most need of Thy mercy.

Serenity Prayer:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;courage to change the things I can;and wisdom to know the difference.

A mystery is an event in Jesus’ life we think about. A note. Christian Meditation is to think about the event. It isn’t to black out and have the god inter into us. This isn’t pagan meditation. These two forms of meditation are two very different things.

Mysteries Of The Christian Rosary.

Monday, Saturday. The Joyful Mysteries
Code: 
    1. The Annunciation . The Angel Gabriel tells Mary she will be the mother of Jesus.
    2. The Visitation. Mary Goes and visits Elizabeth.
    3. The Nativity. Jesus is born.
    4. The Presentation In The Temple. Jesus' parents took him to the temple to dedicate him to God.
    5. The Finding In The Temple. Jesus' Parents find him in the temple teaching the Jewish leaders.
Tuesday, Friday, Sorrowful Mysteries
Code: 
    1. Agony In The Garden. Jesus is praying in the garden 
    2. Scourging at the Pillar. Jesus is Whipped.
    3. Crowning With Thorns. Jesus is Crowned with thorns
    4. Jesus Carries His Cross. Jesus carries his cross to Calvary.
    5. Jesus Dies. Jesus Dies for our sins.
Wednesday, Sunday, The glorious Mysteries.
Code: 
    1. The Resurrection. Jesus is alive.
    2. The Ascension. Jesus Goes back to heaven.
    3. Pentecost. The Holy Spirit ascends on The disciples.
    4. The Second Coming. Jesus comes again.
    5. The Kingdom of God. The majesty of what God's kingdom is like.
Thursday, The Mysteries Of Light.
Code: 
    1. Jesus is Baptized.
    2. Wedding At Cannon. Jesus turns the water into wine.
    3. Proclamation Of The Gospel. Jesus is preached to the people.
    4.Transfiguration. Jesus is made whiter than snow in front of some of the disciples
    5. Last Supper. Jesus gives us Communion to remember him till he comes back
III. How I use the beads.

I take an ordinary rosary. One you would find at a catholic store. Their are many kinds of rosaries. If you don’t want one with Mary on you can use a plain one made with wood beads and a cord.Start with the Crucifix. Say the “Apostles’ Creed”.Move to the First bead. Say the “Lords Prayer”. On the Three little beads say a “Hail Mary” or If you are not comfortable with that say the Jesus Prayer. Next on the space in between the three small beads say the “O My Jesus Prayer” Then move to the single large bead as you meditate on the first mystery say one “Lords Prayer” ten “Jesus Prayers” After the “Jesus Prayer” Say another " O My Jesus". This is the first decade of the my Protestant Rosary. Follow this pattern till you finish the last decade of the Christian Rosary. After the fifth decade you end with the “Serenity Prayer”.

This is just what I do. This might work for you or it might now. I don’t believe in prayer to God everything works for everyone. I this doesn’t work for something else might work. The only thing to keep in mind is to keep Jesus the main focus.

I kind of came up with my own. I don’t feel comfortable quite yet praying the Hail Mary. Do you think God minds? What do Catholics think about this.
 
Hmmm. Never heard of a Protestant praying the rosary. It is a good idea to read up on why we pray as we do, not just how to do it. Then, God-willing, you will become more comfortable with the Ave Maria. Here is a link about the Rosary (including a subsection on the Ave Maria) from this site: catholic.com/library/Rosary.asp

Catholics also believe that all good things come from God. “Everything that was made was made through him” does not end. He is the one who makes all things new. But God wants to get the graces out as wide and far as possible, and has enlisted our help! Many graces come to us from other people. Mary was so close to Jesus that God gave her a special place in spreading graces.

God doesn’t necessarily give us comfort and sensory delights when we do good things. Once we understand that something is good to do, and we do it though, he will continue to lead us deeper into himself. So, if you’re not quite comfortable yet praying the Hail Mary, have no fear! As long as you continue to humbly approach God through the his mother, he will continue to draw you closer to himself.

I’ve heard of a couple. Most recently, I found out that my brand new (Protestant) sister-in-law has been praying it every day with my brother for the last few months. Knowing that has given me great peace and hope about their marriage.

Sure about that?

Might want to read about hesychasm. Unless you consider a lot of Eastern Christendom ‘pagan’.

Both Luther and Charles Wesley (one of the founders of the Methodist Church) were devoted to the Rosary. Can’t get much better endorsement than that. It’s a lot more common than you’d think.

Back in the mid-eighties, “Anglican Prayer Beads” were introduced. That popularised the rosary in the Anglican world. From there, it spread into Protestant Christianity. As a phenomena, I doubt it currently is more than a blip on anybody’s radar.

Both Evangelical Christianity, and Fundamental Christianity have some major issues with using Rosaries, and the like. However, as a tool, there are some well documented side effects that can help Christians stay on the narrow pathway.

Oddly enough, you don’t read about those side-effects in Catholic literature about using the Rosary. Orthodox literature about using Prayer Ropes merely hints at some of those side effects.

I used the rosary even when I was protestant. It was against my churches teachings but I liked doing it anyway, I just didn’t let them know that I did it.

It was actually John Wesley (Charles’ older and ;)smarter brother).
And then of course, there is:curtsey: Yours Truly. I not only pray the rosary, I actually make rosaries. (For Rosary Army, a perfectly wonderful apostolate that distributes rosaries free of charge to all who ask for one, and promise to pray for RA).

Welcome aboard!! It is a wonderful, wonderful way to pray, and has revolutionalized my prayer life!

Since the Rosary is mostly Hail Marys, I think you should get comfortable praying it or just don’t. The rosary is a complete prayer, and you need to do the whole thing.

What does this have to do with what I wrote and responded to?

Also, which Catholics are you referring to? Latin Catholics? Understandable. Eastern Catholics?.. You might want to re-read the link.
 
I have used a prayer rope to aid in devotions and a time of prayer. I found the exercise to be beneficial to me personally as it gave me insight into the spiritual practice of using such objects as a prayer rope or a rosary and realized it was much akin to the Silence Friends use in meditation and worship.

I have a set of wooden Buddhist prayer beads…but I like the Orthodox prayer rope the best…no noise as one’s fingers move along the knots…I found the “tick…tick…tick” of the hard beads distracting…but was able to move along the knots without the distraction and keep the “Silence” of my meditation in tact as well.

Once in Meeting I took my “chokti” with me and used it during worship…I happended to glance up as I lost concentration on the rope and noticed another Friend on the other side of the worship space using his “mala”…our eyes locked for an instant and each of us smiled at the other. We spoke afterwards about our respective experiences and agreed while using the prayer rope or beads was an interesting exercise in the Meeting for Worship…it distracted from joining in the “Living Silence” and we “missed” being a part of the “Gathered Meeting” where the Silence becomes profound and spiritual…plus when a Friend was moved to provide vocal ministry…I lost my place and found it difficult to…“center down” again using the rope.

I use it alone in the morninings most often now and I don’t bring it to Meeting.

There are over a hundred prayers that can be said with the the standard five decade Rosary. I don’t remember how many don’t include “Hail Mary”, but I’d make a guess that between a third and half don’t include it.

The Rosary is divided into five decades. Each decade represents a mystery or event in the life of Jesus. There are four sets of “Mysteries of the Rosary” (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious). These four “Mysteries of the Rosary” therefore contain, a total of twenty mysteries. The Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries are then said on specific days of the week . During private recitation of the Rosary, each decade requires devout meditation on a specific mystery. Public recitation of the Rosary (two or more people), requires a leader to announce each of the mysteries before the decade, and start each prayer.

The Apostle’s Creed is said on the Crucifix; the Our Father is said on each of the Large Beads;** the Hail Mary is said on each of the Small Beads**; the Glory Be **after the three Hail Mary’s at the beginning of the Rosary, and after each decade of Small Beads.

This is the standard way to pray the rosary. I have never heard of any other way.
 
The Rosary is the Gospel prayed. It should be noted that in each mystery of the Rosary is based on the Gospel events of Jesus and Mary from scripture. Each mystery has scripture attached to it for meditation and reflection.

In fact for every mystery prayed one is praying the fulfillment of the Law and the prophets through Jesus Christ and hope for Christians from the blessed Virgin Mary’s mysteries of the Rosary.

There is only one authentic Rosary given to us by our Lady through St. Dominic and others such as the Divine Mercy chaplet given by our Lord Jesus. Pope John Paul the Great included the Luminous mysteries to the authentic Holy Rosary which includes the ministry (revelation) of Jesus Christ.

If anyone wants to put his enemy at bay, pray the (Gospel) Holy Rosary which includes that ancient sign from the first century and the prophet Ezekiel that victory sign of the cross, in the Name of the blessed Trinity, this is very important for in this victory sign all evil scatters.
 
Thank you for your replies. I didn’t mean to start a debate. I wanted to know what to know what Catholic think about what I posted. I am a Protestant christian right now that is between churches and is searching. I didn’t mean to offend anyone about the “Hail Mary” prayer. I am learning as much as I can about Mary and tradition. The more I learn the more I understand and like.
 
I am from one of the holiness churches. I have read that John Wesley prayed the rosary. I was never told this in the Wesleyan churches. I only found out about this after I left the holiness movement.
