Well, what do you think? Would it be ok or would it be blasphemous?

For some reason, I’ve lately been feeling the urge to do so. There have been a lot of really life-changing events recently–my 10-year-old niece died of cancer in July, my sister (who is her grandmother) is having a very hard time with it, and I’ve just undergone major surgery and will have to do so again; in fact it looks like my own health is starting to deteriorate and I’m not even 60.

Does anyone think it would be offensive to God and the Blessed Virigin if I started praying the rosary? And please tell me what the reasons are for your opinions.

TIA

Absolutely nothing wrong with joining us in asking for the Blessed Virgin’s intercession. I only wish more Protestants would!

Many of them do and have prayed the Rosary. Apparently one of the Wesley brothers, founders of Methodism, used to pray it frequently.

Praying the rosary is growing in popularity with Protestants. You might want to look for the book Praying the Rosary by Megan McKenna. It gives a good biblical background of the rosary and I think might be written more for a Protestant audience than for a Catholic audience.

Really, the rosary invites you to reflect on the life of Jesus. The nice thing about praying to Mary is that she will always lead you closer to her Son.

The Rosary is a truly beautiful prayer, and I second the book suggested above. It’s so wonderful to be able to ask for the Blessed Mother’s intercession!!!

Not at all blasphemous. I say Protestants are most welcome to say the rosary and make it a private devotion. So many of them fear that it ‘would make them Catholic’. As if Catholicism is some kind of vile disease. Honestly.

I have a friend who prayed the Rosary for two years before finally crossing the Tiber. EVERYBODY should pray the Rosary!

I am a new Catholic, but it was an eye opener as a Protestant to actually understand what the prayer of the Rosary was! I had always heard such horrible things about it, and when I finally understood it and started praying it, everything changed for me, I mean, in my understanding of a whole world of spirituality that I didn’t know existed and how deep and meaningful it all was!

So, I say - start praying the Rosary and enjoy the richness that it will add to your life!

God Bless!

you’ve a lot of good suggestions here…

I think you should pray the rosary…after all Mary is your Mother, too.

Anyone can pray the rosary. you don’t have to be Catholic to pray it. Not as far as I know. As a matter of fact, its a good idea to pray the rosary. My husband is not yet Catholic as he is still studying the Catechism, and he says the rosary with me from time to time. The rosary fills one with deep peace as you say it, and contemplate the mysteries of the rosary. It is wonderful, and very fullfilling! I recommend you downloand how to say the rosary. God bless you abundantly! Here is a link you can check out on how to say the rosary:

I am a Lutheran and I try to say the Rosary every day, at least 5 decades.
I have been thinking about converting for the last several years.
I got little rosary book in the mail(unsolicited) from Aid to the Church in Need. I stashed it away, after reading through some of it.
Because we support several pro-life organizations, some Catholic, I got a rosary in the mail. I pulled out this booklet and started to pray the rosary, then ordered one with meditations from JPII with the luminous mysteries.
When I started to pray about 5 years ago my dh was fairly anti-catholic- now he’s thinking of converting, too.
We still have a few issues(With the Church,) have his previous marriage to get annulled, ect, if we do join. I absolutly love praying the Rosary, and pray(on my fingers, hope that’s OK) when on a long drive.

:clapping: it’s wonderful how many people are taking up this wonderful practice of honouring our Blessed Mother, who is surely the Mother of all who follow her son.

Fingers, toes, driving, walking, kneeling in Church or lying in bed before you drift off to sleep … it’s all good!

MP, thank you very much for that website. I’ve just glanced at it and I’m going to read it more thoroughly in a little while. And thank you all for your gracious responses.

I don’t have a rosary now so I ordered one from QVC–I don’t know of any Catholic bookstores around here where I could purchase one and anyway, I’m pretty much housebound and can’t get out.

By the way, can anyone educate me on the different mysteries?

Thanks, again, in advance. Big hugs to you all and this is the best example of evangelism I’ve ever seen.

:blessyou: all

your welcome! 🙂

You mentioned you are housebound, otherwise, all you need to is stop by a Catholic church and they’d likely have a pamphlet on how to say the rosary right there in the foyer of the church - free-

however, if you can’t get out, you might call a nearby Catholic church and I’ll bet they’d be happy to bring over a pamphlet that lists all the different mysteries out for you. The mysteries basically follow the life of Christ, from His birth all the way to His ascension and the Pentecost…

There are also lots of websites outlining the mysteries if you google it.

You don’t need a rosary to pray the rosary. Your fingers will do just fine.

It’s funny that you ask if it’s ok to use your fingers! I don’t think there are rules, the beads are for your ease in tracking where you are. To be honest, I rarely use my beads because I almost always use a CD version to pray the Rosary with. I have several, one with Fr. Groeschel, which I adore! So, I am mostly in my car when I am praying this devotion. If I had to use my beads, I’d probably get confused at this point!😉

The prayers of the Rosary are all beautiful prayers.

It starts with the Apostle’s Creed, which some Protestants recite already. This is a list of the things we believe in as followers of Christ.

Then we say the Lord’s Prayer, again a scriptural prayer familiar to all Christians.

The Hail Mary is the one that some people get hung up on. It is a beautifully scriptural prayer asking our Mother to pray for us.

Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you. (The words of Gabriel to Mary at the annunciation) Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. (The words of Elizabeth to Mary when she went to help her cousin) **Holy Mary, Mother of God, **(Her title and acknowlegement of her position as queen mother) pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. (A simple and direct request for her to bring our petitions to the attention of our Lord) Amen (I believe)

We know that Mary can pray for us because we just stated that we believe in life everlasting when we prayed the Creed. We know that Mary is alive forever in Heaven and that “the prayers of an honest man availeth much.”

We also pray the Glory Be. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Another prayer that gives glory to the Three in One, the Godhead, for ever.

Many people add the Fatima prayer. Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins and lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy. This one is another one that points straight to Jesus as the One who forgives sin and shows us the way to the Father.

None of these prayers are blasphemous. Reciting these prayers in love does not result in blasphemy, even for non-Catholics. I encourage you to say the Rosary when you feel prompted to do so. God will see your sincere desire to please Him and will welcome your efforts.

It’s strange how many think that there are strict rules to saying the rosary. It is, essentially, a private devotion although Catholics pray in groups a lot of the time.

There’re absolutely no rules for how you count, and no penalties for saying eleven or more Aue Marias per decade, as I understand it.
