Protestant saying the rosary?

I can see nothing in any of the prayers or mysteries that protestants should object to- it’s all very biblical.
the only thing they may object to is the assumption and crowning of Mary to/in heaven. Other than that it just follows the birth, crucifiction of Christ.

I’m glad it’s OK to use fingers- the beads would probably be distracting while driving.

I am sure I don’t remember all of this exactly but… Back, maybe twenty to twenty-five years ago, many from the Franciscan University of Steubenville were particpating in protests at abortion clinics - you know Operation Rescue. They still protest today but not in the same fashion.

I tell you all this this to tell you a story. Fr. Michael Scanlon and some of the other priests from the University were always getting arrested, along with a lot of Protestant ministers and the laity. Inevitibly over in Pittsburgh they would lock them up in a big gynasium. They placed cots with blankets in there and all the amenities of a gym.

All the ministers got together to decide the days events during lock up. So one of the priest specialty was on the Papacy, it was set up so that he would teach a class on the Pope while a Protestant minister taught Scripture. It wa part of their job as priests to teach the Protestants the rosary.

They got their morning exercise by making walks around the gym, I have forgotten how many times. But as they did, everyone there - Catholic and Protestant - prayed the rosary.

Isn’t it funny how God brings about unity and understanding 😃

I’ve always thought it’s going to take the final persecution of the Church under the Anti-Christ that is going to melt away the walls that divide. Sad to think that’s what it’ll take really, but it’s what’s going to make us a bride without blemish.

And it will be the Christians who understand the suffering Church who will have to strengthen those who haven’t a clue about it. The Rosary is a great step in the path to identifying with Christ’s suffering!

Go for it. One of my professors, a convert to Catholicism, was 30 years a Baptist pastor. He prayed the rosary and the liturgy of the hours with his family before he officially crossed over. He credits the intercession of the Blessed Mother for convincing him.

ainglkiss.com/ros/sr.htmI found this link to a scriptural rosary that you might like. It includes all 20 mysteries including the new luminous mysteries recently added by JPII. It takes longer than a regular rosary, but it is nice because when you may be less familiar with a particular set of mysteries it will give you more info from scriptures about each part of the Christ’s life. When I first started out I found it easier to use a cd or to look at a booklet that had pictures for each mystery to keep me on track.

I can’t think of any reason that it would be a problem for a Protestant to say the rosary…it is just a form of meditative prayer, focusing on the life of Jesus and His relationship with His mother…and asking her to intercede with Jesus. I have a young neice who was just born with a seizure disorder, so she has not been able to leave the neo-natal unit since her birth. Saying the rosary has helped me as we all pray for her recovery. Her father (my brother-in-law) is Protestant and my sister is Catholic, but I am sure Jesus and Mary are hearing all of our prayers! AKM

The Rosary like most Catholic Prayer is Scriptually based. If “Bible Christians” would just look at the Rosary or nearly any Catholic prayer including the Mass. They would see Sacred Scripture the base of all of our prayer.

If “Bible Christians” would just look at the whole Bible and not just selected passages out of the expurgated Protestant versions…they’d be Catholics.

Thank you SO MUCH for the website!!! I just returned to the Church this summer (after 14? years away) because I had a dream in which someone told me to “pray the Rosary” and “go to Mass and receive Communion.”

I didn’t have a Rosary, but I went to a local Catholic church the next day and felt just horribly uncomfortable and out of place, even though the church was empty. I sat down in the little side chapel with the Blessed Sacrament, apologized to God for saying words I wasn’t sure I necessarily believed, and then I said the Rosary.

I have prayed it nearly everyday since, and I have never known such peace. I didn’t have a Rosary, but I had beads and wire, etc., so I made my own. It’s the strangest Rosary you ever saw, but it works. 👍

I’m looking forward to learning how to make a Rosary in a more traditional fashion. 😉

Blessings to all!

What a nice story! Thanks for sharing that. I also returned to the Church after a long absence a little over a year ago. Praying the Rosary every day has also brought me great peace. I thank our Blessed Mother so much for this great gift that allows to get so close to Her and to her Son.
I´m glad the website helped you. Hope you have fun making a more “fashionable” rosary 🙂
God Bless.

Hi, again; I have another question and I’m sorry if it’s a dumb one.

How often can I say the rosary? What I mean is, can I say more than one a day? I just prayed a rosary for desperately ill friend but I feel like I need to be praying intensely for myself also. Would it be all right to say one for myself only?

I find it really slows me down and gives me a chance to meditate and I enjoy it very much.

Pray the Rosary as often as you want! Pray all 20 decades, if you have the stamina (it takes about an hour and a half). I never heard of such a thing as too much prayer.

Abolutely no problem praying for yourself - after all each Our Father is full of petitions for ourselves, and Our Lord himself taught us so!

Just want to say I love this thread, I am in the middle of a Rosary Novena 15 decades daily for 3, 9days then 15 decades daily for 3 9 days, in thanks for the conversion of my son. I have to sgare this with you I first had gotten a green scapular and put it under his matress (He is an Agnostic). It was there for about 3 weeks and he found it he comes to me with it in his hand and says “whats this.” I think Oh no! so I tell a little white lie and say I don’t know how it got there because I think he will be furious and throw it out. Low and behold he puts it around his neck that was about a month ago and he is still wearing it. He takes it of when he takes a shower and makes sure to put it back on again. I am in disbelief Our Lady is most difinately listening to my prayers. I will let you know how my rosary novena works,

I had some of the same concerns myself, I’m glad I found this thread!

I’ve found quite a few wonderful sites for praying the rosary, I feared it wouldn’t be right, not being Catholic, yet, and worried that I’d mess it up, being so clumsy, not knowing the prayers or anything.

It’s encouraging to know that it’s not a “For Catholics Only”. 😃

I’ve been praying everyday that I would be able to become closer to God, get to know Blessed Virgin Mary, and be able to pray for the conversion of my family and friends. It’s not even as “wordy” as I feared it was, just had to tell you that.

Plus, I just love the virtual rosary site, it has such beautiful music to help keep me from getting distracted. 👍

I’m Protestant.
I frequently pray the Rosary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
When prompted by Holy spirit, I have been known to pray all 20 decades, and the Divine Mercy several times a day.
Have done so for years.
My day goes much better when I don’t “forget”.
Sometimes while praying either one I am so overwhelmed with closeness to our Lord that I end up talking with Him for an hour.
I have several rosaries, carry one with me, one on rearview mirror since I tend to pray more these days as I drive these dangerous highways. They serve as a tangible reminder to spend much time in prayer.
To me, it’s nothing magical or “Protestant versusCatholic”, just spending time with our Lord and His Mother.
I’m a touchy/feely person, so holding the rosary just helps me feel closer to our Lord.
I truly love how Fr, Corapi says:
“If she’s good enough for Him, she’s good enough for me”
