Well comparing the date on the times article to the vaticans records it seems that the pope did not say this. On the link i posted their was an article on penance. However I did not see this quote in there. However I was skimming so if anyone wishes please check for yourself. Just go to the link press 1984 and go to the bottom at December 11 and click the link.

Your uncle may be correct, here’s the article from the LA Times.
From the LA Times, the quote I got without paying money is:

*Rebutting a belief widely shared by Protestants and a growing number of Roman Catholics, Pope John Paul II on Tuesday dismissed the “widespread idea that one can obtain forgiveness directly from God” *

I’m 100% certain the LA Times headline is missing the Pope’s teaching by a mile, and I’m certain the Pope spoke wisely.

In that while forgiveness is from God, we are also called to Church to not only do as Christ commanded, but to also learn what is sin, to repent, to forgive, and to ask for forgiveness with our pastor’s guidance.

As for the Uncle who is putting such unnecessary stuff out there, I would kinds ask for clarification and if none if forthcoming you can easily block their posts on Facebook with having to go 100% and remove them.
