The Catholic Church has never come close to any line in worshipping Mary in the sense of the word that is reserved for Christ alone. The only ones who do not understand this of the Church are non-Catholics. And those non-Catholics commonly believe that you as an Orthodox worship statues.

When I attended an Orthodox Church a few years back, I was surprised at how many people were kissing the statues and praying in front of Icons. Now how can one say that many Catholics worship Mary and have no issue with kissing statues and praying before Icons?

I think this is the problem in this discussion. It is not an all-or-nothing thing. My comment is to contrast Catholic devotion to Mary vs. the Orthodox one. There is a difference. It is not all-or-nothing. It is not, “do you believe in honoring Mary? Okay, then do it in whatsoever way you like.” Don’t forget the various degrees in between when you can do it the right way, do it not enough, and do it too much. The way Mary is part of our faith is different. Not just because we have the icon of the Theotokos in every church the same way you’d have the statue of Mary in every church means we do the same thing.

I think you mistake the kissing of icons with things like apparitions which claim that Christ wants to destroy the world but Mary is the one holding him back. Or that Mary asking us to be consecrated to her heart instead of Christ’s.

Since there is no central authority in the Orthodox churches it appears that each authocephalous entity can decide for itself, subject to no other Orthodox church, what is licit/valid.
So while there may not be any statues in CTG’s Orthodox church, it appears that the separate Orthodox church that you attended views them as permissible.

Well, we do kiss our icons and the chalice and the priest’s hand and the book of Gospels and the blessing cross. But we don’t have statues.
Ummm…I just attended an Orthodox Church and there was statues there and a lot of kissing going on.

I am OCA. Perhaps the statues were already in the parish where they are? Are they leasing?
Statues have gone out of use in the Orthodox Church at least by the 1200s.

CTG…maybe but I promise you that there were statues at the front door and a couple around the altar. People kissed the feet of the statue of Christ as they entered and when they left.

When I first went, they were renting the chapel at a Catholic Church. Now they have their own chapel and the statues are there. One of Christ at the door, one of Mary and Joseph at the altar. They have the Icons and all as well.

Perhaps they inherited the statues from the Catholic Church. While statues have gone out of use, it doesn’t mean we’d just throw them out with the garbage, that is still iconoclasm. As a former RC, I kept all my statues. Most of them were given to me as a gift and it would not be right for me to give them away just because I became Orthodox.
