Finally, in the authoritative work by Penn State professor Philip Jenkins, Pedophiles and Priests, it was determined that between .2 and 1.7 percent of priests are pedophiles. The figure among the Protestant clergy ranges between 2 and 3 percent.

The press isn’t anxious to tell people about Protestant pedophiles, because then they’d have to admit that pedophilia isn’t caused by celibacy, since the majority of Protestant pastors are married.

Let us get a few facts straight. Pedophilia is not caused by celibacy, but it is a well-known fact that by having a policy of celibacy for their Priest it has driven the type of people who are more prone to be pedophiles and that would be homosexuals. This trend is starting to decline because of the acceptability of the homosexual life style. However, before this, many homosexuals had little choice and the priesthood was a way to stay hidden.

By comparing other denomations, sin by no means makes the atrocity committed by Catholic priest and Church any more palpable. The Church has know about this problem for decades if not for centuries as records have proved this and the church has turned a blind eye for years. By not stopping the priest’s abuse the church set up atmosphere of acceptance and this aloud many more people over the years to be abused.
The Church was wrong for it actions or better-said inaction.

Celibacy doesn’t “cause” pedophilia, since married, heterosexual Protestant pastors are at least twice as likely to be pedophiles as Catholic priests.

I have no idea how a practicing homosexual would “stay hidden” in the Catholic priesthood, any more than a man who was actively heterosexual outside of the bonds of marriage. Both are just as likely to get caught, and neither of them would remain in the priesthood if they were.

You cannot deny that the Catholic Church hide this and allowed it to continue. It is a matter of public record that the Church hide priest actions, transferred them between churches, and or just ignored the actions. The Church was wrong in their actions and the denial of what happened.

You are trying to justify actions by comparing it to other terrible acts saying that it just is not us. It is not just the Catholic Church, anyone who commits the atrocities should be held accountable.

What do you think is going on, with them being sued and convicted and going to jail?

It is a fact that most male on male pedophilia is committed by person with a homosexual basis. I have not heard of to many little girls being abused in the Catholic Church.

No little boys were either - all of the Catholic victims were in their late teens and early twenties - we are not talking about anyone under the age of 16, here, in the case of the recent scandal. This is part of why it is so difficult to get convictions in these cases - because it’s not totally clear whether it was consenting sex, or not.

You cannot deny that the Catholic Church hide this and allowed it to continue. It is a matter of public record that the Church hide priest actions, transferred them between churches, and or just ignored the actions. The Church was wrong in their actions and the denial of what happened.

The fault of the Bishops was that they listened to the psychologists who said that these men were “cured,” instead of to their own common sense, which would have been to forbid these men to serve as priests any more. But they did do everything they knew to do within reason, to try to prevent the problem from recurring.

They didn’t advertise about it for the same reason Protestant churches don’t advertise about it when one of their members of clergy has done something like that - they didn’t want to lose members.

I was involved in a case of a Protestant pastor (happily married) who was sexually abusing disabled people in the hospital, when he went for hospital visits. We didn’t take him to court because none of the victims wanted to testify - they were embarrassed by the whole thing - so we just fired him and sent him on his way. I have no idea where he went, or what he’s doing now.

I guess I’m no different than any of those Bishops, and actually I’m worse, because I didn’t send that guy for therapy, either, because we just wanted to get rid of him - but I really don’t see what other options we had, under the circumstances - you can’t send someone to jail without a trial, and you can’t have a trial if the witnesses won’t testify. I suppose if we had offered them all kinds of money, they might have testified, but we didn’t have any to give them.

Nobody in our congregation knew anything about the situation - those who wondered about his sudden departure were told that he had personal reasons for needing to leave the city.

Nobody is justifying anything. You are trying to make it out to be an exclusively Catholic issue and it clearly is not.

II never said it was just a Catholic problem, and this defense it a typical plea of we are not the only ones.
The other one is other people do bad thing so it is not all our fault.
However, the Catholic Church has a history of covering up this abuse all the way back to the middle ages.
Time will tell if there is an honest effort to fix the problem.

Catholics are actually the least likely people to do this sort of thing - which I suppose is why it is so shocking when it happens.

If it were being “covered up” then how would you even know about it? The ones that are covering it up are the ones you never hear about.
