Sometimes we come across scripture that does not make sense to us, or we need some one to instruct us or translate scripture and define scripture to us.

Who or where do you go to get infallable teaching or instruction from sacred scripture?

2 Peter 1:20 Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation,
21 for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.

2 Peter 2:1 There were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will introduce destructive heresies and even deny the Master who ransomed them, bringing swift destruction on themselves.
2 Many will follow their licentious ways, and because of them the way of truth will be reviled.
3 In their greed they will exploit you with fabrications, but from of old their condemnation has not been idle and their destruction does not sleep.

Well, certainly not any mortal man who’s alive today…Roanoker

So do you refer to some Christian person or saint that onced lived, to instruct you, or teach you about scripture?

I depend on a combination of scripture, ancient Christian tradition, and some imput from the apostolic fathers. My point was, not the pope, and I think that was what the OP was hinting at. Roanoker

I don’t understand. You say you depend on scripture, ancient Christian tradition and some (name removed by moderator)ut from apostolic fathers? Now please explain the difference between what you depend on as a Protestant Chritstian and what the Catholic Christian depends on (Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition and the Apostolic Chain)? What Apostolic father (protestant or Catholic) do you depned on who is not a mortal man? All Apostolic Fathers were mortal men. Do you follow the advice of your pastor who is a mortal man? What traditions do you follow if you are a Bible Christian? I don’t believe protestants have an Apostolic line of Fathers. Maybe Luther and/or Calvin, but to go further than that you might be talking about Fathers of the Catholic Church. So which Apostolic father and what Christian tradition?

So to you ancient Christian tradition and some apostolic fathers taught infallibly?(without error?).

Not at all. I said I just rely on them for my guidance. As for apostolic succession, I’m just not sure. Part of me wants to believe it, and part not. I facillate back and forth on that. I certainly never denigrate the concept. Roanoker

I am sorry, I am not understanding, where do you,or a protestant get their scriptural teachings from, as one to interpret for them diffucult scripture context?

In the end, I depend on the Holy Spirit to guide me. Its a faith thing. I have very little faith in men to guide me. Roanoker

Ok, I deeply respect that. I hope I am not coming across as difficult or nuisance, if I am just let me know politely thanks. But how do you know it is of the Holy Spirit that reveals these truths to you. I respect your faith, I am just ignorant to understanding how one can assertain truth from deception?

I suppose the short answer is that Protestants haven’t got much use for the word “infallible”, because it sounds (at best) like a king sized ego trip by the people who want to make the claim to infallibility.

If we find something difficult to comprehend there are plenty of commentaries out there, written by people who have spent a lifetime studying the scriptures, but none of them are supposed to be infallible.

Absolute certainty is a phantom which fundamentalists of all shades go chasing after, but which just isn’t available.

So you’re never really confident that you’ve got it right. Plenty of Catholics have written commentaries, too. The Protestant commentaries say that the Eucharist is meant to be symbolic. The Catholic commentaries say that it is real. So how do you decide which commentary to believe?

The same as you. I decide the question on the basis of my theological presuppositions.

You said that you look at the commentaries to decide the question. And then you said you decide the question based on your theological presuppositions. If you already knew the answer, you wouldn’t be looking it up. 🙂 A presupposition must come from somewhere. So what do you base your presuppositions on?

You can’t have an infinite regress, so if you traced your presuppositions back far enough I suppose you would end up in the murky depths of your unconscious mind.

**I had hoped to use the word by its meaning (without error). If one is to believe in God. How is one to know if his is instructed in the ways of God without error? Is Truth infallible? **

Point well taken; Although, fear has no place in Truth. A commentary is what one can pertain to inorder to justify or support their beliefs or disagreements. These are not infallible, but what the commentater commits to writing may or may not reflect a fallible or infallible truth.

Absolute certainty is a phantom which fundamentalists of all shades go chasing after, but which just isn’t available.
I would beg to differ under the pretense of the faith only. Protestant take to the belief of Only faith saves you and or Only Scripture saves you, now Gratia only saves you. Only announces an absolute, the op is, how do you know this to be infallible?

Now you depend on the Holy Spirit in the end? So which is it? First it was Scripture, ancient Christian tradition and some of the apostolic fathers that you depended on.

You need to have faith in your fellow man. No man can accomplish anythhing on their own. You cannot sit there and say you are where you are without the help from your fellow man. Regardless if it is your worldly life and/or your spritual life.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “as iron sharpens iron so man shapens his fellow man.” Mortal men have guided you along the way.

I don’t. As I said, we don’t have the luxury of absolute certainty; only opinions about which we might be right or wrong.

I find you very interesting mathematician. Then can you name something that is absolute? or Right?, and how do you determine something to be wrong?

Like the majority of people I hold the opinion that murder, for example is wrong, but I can’t absolutely prove it. Of course some opinions are mutually exclusive. You can’t very well hold the opinion that the Christian God exists, and simultaneously hold the opinion that murder is perfectly ok. That doesn’t alter the fact, however, that the existence of God is itself an opinion.
