Shlemele:
I think this is the crux of the whole thing, the church we are raised in plays a huge part in how we see God. I was raised in the Anababtist tradition and the first time I went to a mass it TOTALLY wierded me out. You went to a protestant serviceand it wierded you out. Traditions and scripted services are very wierd if you arn’t used to it and so is speaking in toungs and some of that stuff (to be honest I really don’t feel comfortable around that stuff). The key is that each of you probably thought that the other was going to conform to your point of view. Even though each of you thought you could handle it you both got wierded out. Count your blessings and remain friends because the friendships in faiths like ours can ballance each other out. (please excuse spelling, spell checker is out)
I know what you mean. I dated a girl in high school, beautiful girl with a beautiful soul! After dating for three months and having a wonderful time, we decided to go to each other’s church service (Mass). Saturday night, she went to mine, Sunday morning I went to hers, Sunday evening we broke up.

Nothing happened to offend either one of us. I think we both realized that:
a) Neither one of us was going to convert to the other’s religion,
b) Neither one of us could accept the others religtion, and
c) If we were to eventually get married, having two religions was not an option.

So we split on happy terms.

I did not grow up Priotestant. ( I know, CHuhces of CHrist are Protestant…whatever…)

I attended three Masses in my time. Andhave seen about 18 or so televised forms. My first mass was a telivised one. I was OK with it. Indeed, it seemed impressive.

I did have an uncomfortable reacton tot he one I visited in eprson shortly after though. It was a very poorly done Novos Ordo Masse…

which the Prest Improvised part of…

It lacked the awe and revernece f the telivised version, which of coruse displeased me. I felt cheated out of a real Mass.

I did finally attend a proeprly done one. And one day hope t visit a Tridentine. I had no ill reactions to those two I visited.

Just the firts one which was not done properly.

yes yes yes we want noncatholics at mass we also want to see you in rcia I am not saying that you have to convert but we do want you to see the beauty of the catholic faith and I would also like to say that everyone no matter what your background is most welcome however you will need to refrain from taking communion but you may go up during communion and recieve a blessing from the priest just cross your arms over your chest and the priest will know to give you a blessing

Can I ask why you’re responding to a thread that hasn’t had a post since 2005?

I am responding to this post because I dont know about iother people but this is the first time I have read it I am presently looking atthe archives concerning noncatholic religions to see if i can give some encouraging words to people who are considering converting to catholocism and even though the post are at least 2 years old have not yet done so

I brought a girl that I was sort of dating to a Mass the other night. She is a devout pentecostal. I have been to her services many times and wanted her to see the mass. I was really surprised by her reaction to it. She seemed really annoyed and uncomfortable. She would slump in her seat with her head in her hands and asked if she could leave. I told her to wait for me in the back.
I was really surprised by her reaction. Has anyone else ever brought a protestant to a mass and had the same reaction? What was it in the mass that would make her react like this?
It was a good thing you did not sprinkle her with Holy Water, cause if you did, it sounds like she would have melted. lol

Sounds like there was denomic entity inside her to react like that at Mass.

Thanks everyone.

I knew that it would be shocking for her. I remember being shocked when I went to my first protestant service years ago. I was/am a little hurt about it so I think I will hold off talking to her for a little while. But when I do, I am going to ask her what made her react the way she did.

And then I am going to invite her to another MASS! And I think the next time I see her will be at that mass.

Catholicism, if one has no previous exposure to it, can be very alien…
