I just realized that protestants do believe in infalliblity.
This in reference to their leaders and to their own interpetion of scriptures.

Example:
  1. KJV only position
  2. When their denominational leaders speak, they are speaking God’s commands.
  3. In protestantism every man is a law unto himself(his own interpetion of scripture).

I think you are mistaken on this first point. While most Protestants believe in their own right to interpret scripture, most have no problem disagreeing with their leaders. This is why there are so many splits into the various denominations. If you disagree, start your own Church or change denominations. This is considered fine and normal.

Of course they do!!!

In “matters of faith and morals” they will defer to their pastors’ knowledge and biblical interpretation.

My last conversation with my protestant pastor, a well known bible teacher, who preaches also on the radio…

Me: I’m ready to invest in a Bible Commentary, whose would you suggest?

Him: Hmm, not sure I could suggest just one.

Me: Would you suggest the Matthew Henry Commentary?

Him: Well, I agree with the Matthew Henry commentary on some things…

Me: So how can I know when I purchase a bible commentary that I’m getting the right one?

Him: Chuckles nervously. Moves to talk with next churchmember.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Everyone has a “Pope shaped void” in their hearts. 😉

I’ve been a Protestant all of my life. I’ve never heard these three things before.

Wow. This reads like a Jack Chick tract - in reverse.

I agree with pnewton on this matter, I have never heard this, although I don’t doubt that there are some out there that believe it. Anyway, was this topic posted for a real dialogue or was this just a tacky post?

O.S. Luke,
You don’t believe that individuals interpret the Bible for themselves? If not, what is your position on interpretation of Scripture ? I thought most Protestants believed that…🤷

  1. I’ve never heard the KJV read in a Lutheran Church. NIV, RSV, ESV and others, but never the KJV.
  2. Poppycock! Please show in the Lutheran Confessions where we believe this.
  3. Balderdash! Please show in the Lutheran Confessions where we believe this.
This is also certain, that no one should rely on his own wisdom in the interpretation of the Scripture, not even in the clear passages… We also gratefully and reverently use the labors of the fathers who by their commentaries have profitably clarified many passages of the Scripture. And we confess that we are greatly confirmed by the testimonies of the ancient church in the true and sound understanding of the Scripture.** Nor do we approve of it if someone invents for himself a meaning which conflicts with all antiquity, and for which there are clearly no testimonies of the church. **

Perhaps a bit of research, and a bit of Christian charity are in order.

I thought most Protestants believed that…🤷
I suspect there are a lot of things that Catholics have mistaken about Protestants, just as there are things about Catholics that Protestants are mistaken about.

I cannot tell if it is intended to be baiting or just reflects ignorance. Its hard to tell about people.🤷

There’s some protestants I know who believe in KJV only. They’re not Lutherans, they’re non-denoms.

There are some protestants who look to certain leaders for a “word from God”. I’m thinking of the Benny Hinn crowd.

I do know that in some protestant Bible studies they are looking for what the Bible is telling them personally through scripture… again, they’re non-denoms.

I don’t think the OP is being rude or not giving Christian charity. I think that perhaps he knows some people who are protestants who believe this, as I do.

Well, so we exclude Lutherans because martin Luther did not have enough time to come up with a list of things longer than his thesis about the church.

The post is true about the vast majority of protestant denominations

Perhaps you are right, Steph, and if so, I stand corrected. The way the OP said things appeared condescending (hard to tell sometimes with written words). That lead me to respond the way I did. Maybe I should have requested a bit more specificity.

Goodness, he lived more than 25 years after the Oct. 31, 1517.

I’m not convinced of that, either. I think it is more an American “evangelical” POV.

I know Catholics who believe that using birth control is acceptable and don’t believe in transubstantiation. Does that mean that Catholics believe in such?

I am just illustrating the problem with such logic.

Ok, I’ll go along with that because those are the ones I’m personally familiar with, Baptist, penacostals, some methodist denominations, chuch of christ, evangelical christian, within baptoist catagory, include southern, missionary, independent fundamental, ABA, many independent , nazarene, assemblies of godcharismatic churches, disciples of christ, church of the nazerene, church of god in christ, I cant think of anymore right now but if not enough I’ll add to the list later.

does not mean it is church teaching, you are right about that but I think the differance is most catholics know the churches teaching on birth control and transub. and quietly attend mass. I do not know anyone who actavely says the church is wrong on these issues and remains catholic accept politicians and abortion.

You talk like priests or the pope would never “move on to the next churchmemeber”. They would if they are busy.
Maybe you should have asked while in a special private meeting.

Amen to that.

No. The “I-heard-a-Catholic-say-such-and-such” form of argument is, in my humble opinion, absurd (as I’ve been trying to tell Protestant posters for some time now).
