Non-argument…if the original suffers a loss, it is split…period!
I will ask again. Were the Apostles “divided” after Judas betrayed them. Or did they suffer loss? It is not a Non-argument, it is a rather simple question…PERIOD!

Perhaps it wasn’t the right post.
I’m not going to try and hunt it down. You’re not lutheran so I got confused. If I said something about you that wasn’t true I apologize. I was guessing by your post.

Hmm, well lets see…you folks state that you are the original church, and that as time went on, the others, such as Orthodox split from you…therefore…who is it that got itself divided? Hmm?
you say you are a “persecuted non-denominational preacher”?

well, if you are persecuted for following Christ - as you know him - all the more power to you… but if you are persecuting Christ by persecuting Catholics - and if you suspect that to be the case… All i can say is "better you than me… " :hypno:

Of the Catholic Faith is there not 22 churches and 8 rites? All in communion with the Pope?

Isn’t God capable of more than one way to truth?
God is capable of only the TRUTH, there is NO way around it. Jesus said, "I AM the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE. NO one comes to the Father but thru ME. HIS TRUTH, not our way. The sooner we face that and start working for true unity, the better off our whole world will be. Pride is our greatest enemy.

There is only one Catholic Church with 21 rites within that one Church. A Rite is not a different church, they are all Catholic, one faith. the same as the Pope.

There are a few more rites than that (there are actually several Western rites, even though one of them is used far, far more than all the others), but basically you are correct: there are 22 sui iuris churches (1 Western and 21 Eastern) which make up the one Roman Catholic Church (or Roman Catholic Communion, if you like).

There are 22 rites that make up the one Catholic Church, (according to Fr. Mitch Pacwa.) The only thing that differs in the rites are local customes, languages etc. All Doctrine is the same and they are all equaly Catholic. God Bless

If he said that, then he made a mistake. (Everyone’s capable of making mistakes – even Fr. Mitch. :)) But I think a more likely explanation is that you just misunderstood him.

Although there are 22 churches (churches sui iuris, if you want to be precise) there are not 22 rites. Churches and rites are not the same thing.

The number of rites differs from the number of churches for two reasons: in the West there are several rites but only one church (the Latin Church) whereas in the East there are 21 churches, but only about a half-dozen rites.

Hope that helps. If not then you should start a thread about it in the Eastern Catholicism Forum. God bless,

As a protestant (although my church steadfastly disagrees that we are “protesting” anything) I unfortunately have to agree with you. The lack of original thought or scholarship among Protestants is appalling. We say that Catholics are hide-bound by tradition but let me tell you, hearing vitually the same 5 songs, 3 specials and then sermon for years on end is really starting to get on my nerves. The only thing that changes is the flower arrangement on the alter.
I recently started doing some serious Bible study and research into church history (Catholic and Protestant) and I am learning a lot of very discouraging and disappointing things.
Ellammcg:
I am also a Protestant and I share some of the same concerns. About 3 years ago, I started an in-depth study of the history of Judaism and Christianity-Catholic and Protestant traditions. I too found things that are disturbing to me.

I finally read the Bible cover to cover-was shocked by what the Bible does say and by what it does not say. At this point, though I am a Christian, I feel like I don’t really belong anywhere. I am tired of the same sermons over and over again. I want to go deeper into scripture. When I ask difficult questions, no one wants to answer them.

I do not think that Protestants have any right to judge the Catholic faith. I think we have enough to worry about with our own shortcomings. Matthew 7:3 (ESV): 3Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

We may not agree with every belief in the Catholic Faith, but we can certainly be respectful. I have friends who are Catholic, and they have been so kind to me. They have helped me through some really difficult times. I definitely believe they are a testament to the Love of Christ. I also have an Uncle who is a Catholic, and I have great respect for him.

I also have a request within this same context:

If Catholics tell you what we believe and can point it out in the Bible and in the Cathechism of the Catholic Church, QUIT insisting on trying to “correct” us on what we believe. It’s this insistence that protestants have of trying to correct a Catholic on what they believe that is annoying. ACCEPT as fact what we believe rather than trying to TELL US what we believe when we’re TELLING YOU that’s not the case. I’m not saying that protestants have to believe it, but what I am saying is to quit trying to correct us on our beliefs that you THINK you know but clearly don’t.

Oi, that is soooooooooo annoying!

Heh–I don’t doubt that, and shall bear it in mind. Course, the Protestants on this forum are also used to having their minds read in the oddest, most perverse ways. Truce?

As to the OP, I’ve attended RCIA, but that seems to be more of a classroom situation, with no real opportunity to ask individual questions or to clear up issues as they arise. These forums are far better for that, and I hope no one minds if we continue to use them to clear up difficulties/misconceptions, or to weigh Catholic responses to objections that occur to us.

I realize it’s a tall order to request of a protestant.

Just to make clear what I am talking about. A protestant will claim that Catholics believe X. Catholics will say, “No, we believe Y.” That same protestant will say, “No, you believe X.” And then insist on Catholics believing X in spite of the fact that we tell them no, we do NOT believe in X.

That is what I am talking about. Rather than responding with, “No, you believe X.” It’d be nice if they said, “Oh, ok. So you believe Y. I thought you believed X but you’re saying you believe Y. Got it.”

That’s not to say that the protestant has to believe Y. THIS is what I am talking about. 👍

I find this interesting. I’m sure RCIA really depends on who is teaching it. I’ve attended some RCIA classes and usually towards the end there is a Q&A session where people can ask questions to get answers. That would be the opportunity to ask individual questions and clear up issues.

It is unfortunate you did not experience that in the RCIA class(es) you attended. 😦

Got it. I was simply saying that Protestants have encountered similar assumptions from forum Catholics about what we must believe/what we’re thinking/what our motivations are, and sometimes run into similar resistance when trying to explain the contrary. I’m sure it’s irritating to encounter the same from Protestants.

Yeah, I’m not surprised to hear that classes vary by instructor. Luck of the draw, one guesses.

As the old saying goes, “Protestants should be seen and not heard.”

😉

You know? It is a two way street, and both sides should be as respectful to others as they expect to be respected.

The worst part of any forum is where a person “knows more and better” than any other, and no matter what is posted, they insist on making things personal.

Let’s all get real, learn to respect each other, quit making things personal, and move on. No one here is 100% in their ideology, no one! All that matters is that no matter what we do, we only do it to glorify God.

In His service,
Christalone

To respect each other, I agree, but to compromise on the truth is another matter. Jesus said, I AM the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE," and there is only ONE TRUTH. HE also prayed that there be only One Faith, One Church, that we all be One in HIM. Don’t you think its time we all give that some real thought and pray for that day to come quickly. All this division is Satan’s work, divide and conquer. He is the “father of lies”.
God Bless, Memaw
