I disagree that a person needs a degree in theology to understand the Catholic Church. Certainly to understand it at the level of the priest, the bishop, or the Pope, advanced degrees are needed. But for the layperson, it’s not that complicated.

."
i don’t think you need an actual degree in theology to understand the Catholic faith… but it certainly would help - and some protestants act like they need for you to have such a degree yourself before they will listen to you… or you have to know the Bible by heart or something… and even then… even when you know where to find Confession, purgatory, etc…in the Bible… a lot of them don’t listen because there is so much anti-Catholicism in this world… there is this hardened resistance… and they don’t want to believe in it… for whatever reasons…

methinks you protest too much…must be where you are. I have not experienced that. Actually, the opposite. I dated a Pentacostal boy in high school, and he asked me all kinds of questions…I had questions for him too. All the myths he heard, and all the myths I heard were laid to rest, just by laying it all out and talking about it.

My mother is Baptist…my Baptist grandmother taught me alot about the Bible. She loved my Catholic dad very much.

I live in the south now and have many Protestant friends. If they have a question, they just ask. I have never been a knock down drag out fight over religion. 🤷

hmmm… looks like none of them converted…

I rest my case…

and why should they? My siblings and I were raised Catholic due to my “mothers” dilligence.

Let me share something with you. 1966, my first communion.

What were all the girls wearing for communion dresses? Big pouffy dresses with big bows…long gloves, veils to the floor with “Diana like” tiaras. My mother arranged a meeting with Fr. O’Connor to ask him what I was supposed wear for a communion dress. He told her it should be modest and in keeping with the sacrament. She made my dress. It was very plain, no pouffs, no big bows, no tiara. It was white, short sleeve with lace around the empire waist and sleeves. The veil was square with white ribbon trim and seed pearls. It was held to my head by a hair comb. When I asked her why I didn’t have the big pouffy dresses, and why I couldn’t wear lipstick and a crown,…

this Baptist woman said…This is a holy sacrament…not a dress up game or a fashion show…you are child, not a woman (no make up or lipstick). You need to stay focused on why you are receiving communion. The dress will hang in the closet…the sacrament will be with you always.

I will never forget that. My daughter wore the same dress and veil in 1993.

Now, tell me about “conversion”…and the lack of understanding. 😃

Could you please attend an RCIA class (finish it) before attempting to argue Catholic versus Protestant theology…

Yes, i suppose Catholics should study various Protestant theologies also… but i feel most Catholics on the forums have (more or less) done that…

I’m sorry, but it really rankles me when Protestants think they know Catholic theology and they so positively DO NOT!!

another source of information about the true Catholic faith can be found here at Catholic Answers…

I just don’t think it is right to attack something you do not understand…
May an ex catholic respond?

Jesus said that if you deny me before men, i will deny you before the Father…

i try to convert everyone… if it doesn’t work… it is not my responsibility… I don’t believe in just letting people continue on in error… I know Baptists are OK people and believe a lot of what Catholics believe…but where we differ… well, those differences are not to be taken lightly…

there is ONE Church…

Why do I hear Star Wars Imperial March when you wrote that? 😃 Actually, I’ve been wrong about a lot of things when it has come to the catholic church.

You are sooooo blessed to have such a wise Mother. She is RIGHT! I will always remember your story and tell it to many. “The dress will hang in the closet, the Sacrament will be with you always.” What other very wise things did your Mother teach you ? I hope you will share them with us. God Bless, Memaw.

Yes please do:)
Well, I’m actually responding to the initial thread that protestants should go to RCIA Classes before commenting about catholic theology. What about protestants who grew up catholic, went to parochial schools, ect… May they bring up issues with catholic doctrine? I must admit before my jouney into studying actual catholic theology I followed all the same lines most protestants do. However, Actual theology I find that I’m not in disagreement with. What has bothered me is the extra theological stances of many catholics ie… planting St. Joseph statues in the yard to sell houses etc… Pray to St. Christopher as if he has the power within himself to do anything. The thing is I’m not making a statement about the communion of saints I’m making a statement about the etc. beliefs many catholics hold to be true but is not so under their catachism. I hope I’m making myself clear.

What your talking about are devotions, not doctrine. The idea of planting a statue of St. Joseph is an ethnic idea. I have never tried it so maybe those that have can comment, but I will say it is not the Saint that has the power to answer prayer no matter how we ask, but God working thru the prayer of the saint. That includes the Blessed Mother tooo. If you were in need of prayer, I don’t think you would go to a very sinful person to ask for prayer, at least I would go to the most prayerful people I know, those closest to Our Lord. How much closer to Our Lord can we go than to the Blessed Mother and the Saints. They are going with us to Our Lord. They are “helping” us. That is the Communion of Saints. We certainly don’t leave HIM out. Just think of the Mysteries of the Rosary, Our Lord’s life in prayer. My daughter-in-law is a convert and we were talking about this yesterday aft. I was asking her some questions just to see what her reaction was. When my son first started dating her he liked her very much and she said the first thing he did was invite her go to Mass with him on Sunday and she did. She had never had a date ask her to go to church with him before. And they went to Mass every Sunday. He explained as they went and she liked it. Then when they started coming to my house, I would have EWTN on, (at that time we only had it for 3 hours an evening) She asked me one day, "Why doesn’t my church teach us to love the Blessed Mother like that?) She asked many questions and fell in love with Our Lady. When they became engaged a yr. later. my son asked her if she would be willing to take a class of instructions just to be able to understand the Faith their future children would be raised in and she said. “Yes, she would love to.” She told her best friend everything she was learning and soon her friend started taking instructions too and they both converted before the wedding. She told me yesterday, “Mom, we have been married for 20 years and we have had our share of problems, mostly health problems, but I can honestly tell you that our shared Faith has brought us thru. I have seen many friends go thru divorce, livin in’s etc. and I want NO part of that. It has been devastating to their children.” She and my son have 4 children, (after being told she may never be able to have children), and they are a very good example to many others. They have brought several of their couple friends back into the practice of their Catholic Faith. To love your Catholic Faith and to live accordingly, is the best teacher in the world.

I did mention I did not have a problem with the communion of saints. Nor was I specific of Catholic theology. I did mention catholics who put wrong ideas into practice that becomes accepted practice and is not taught by the church.

These devotions while they are not part of Doctrine doesn’t mean they are wrong ideas. They are devotions and the Church has not said they are wrong. You need to try to understand the reasons why some have these devotions. Like I said maybe some who have will comment. But don’t let this be a stumbling block to you. There is no requirement in Catholic teaching to adopt all the devotions folks have.

why should that fact bother you??
Because it’s a distortion of reality.

How do you feel when you hear someone complain that Catholics worship Mary?

Theology and obedience go hand in hand. What would be the sense of knowing the Truth if one doesn’t embrace it?
The point I was trying to make is that I think when we stand before our maker on judgment day, we will be judged on how we lived–not what we knew.
