John 3:17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him
John 3:17
"For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world
might be saved
through Him.
How
might we be saved
through Him? We are saved through His Church. This is His representative on earth which has His authority. (Matthew 16:17-19) He sent His Church (Apostles and Disciples) to baptize persons in the name of the Trinity so that these persons could become members/disciples of His Church (believers in Him).
Baptism is what makes us disciples of Christ because Baptism removes original sin from our souls and makes us adopted children of God whereas original sin had made us enemies of God. (Romans 5)
Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19
Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
Baptism makes us Christ’s disciples. Baptism washes away our sins, both original and personal. Baptism sanctifies us and justifies us.
Acts 22:16
And now why are you waiting? Arise and
be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
1 Corinthians 6:11
And such were some of you. But
you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
This is describing Baptism and its effects. Baptism applies the merits of Jesus’ sacrifice to our souls since we can’t have His real blood poured over us in order to cleanse our souls. Baptism cleanses our souls from original sin and also from all the personal sins on our souls at the time of our baptisms. Baptism sanctifies us, justifies us, and saves us.
After
Baptism (make disciples of all nations), we are “in Christ.”
Obedience (teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you)
is what determines whether a person continues/remains “in Christ” or not. (Acts 5:32, Hebrews 5:9, James 2:14-26)
1 John 5:13
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and
that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
2 Timothy 3:14
**But you must continue **in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
They have eternal life only
if they
continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Colossians 1:21-23
And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— 23
if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.
What happens if they do not continue to believe? They are cut off the Vine (Christ).
Romans 11:22
Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness (grace),
if you continue in His goodness.
Otherwise you also will be cut off.
How do they continue in the
grace of God (continue to
believe)? They steadfastly live the Apostles’ doctrine (obey the gospel of Christ) and participate in Church fellowship; and they partake of the breaking of bread; and they devote their lives to prayer and good works, etc.
Acts 2:42
And they
continued steadfastly in the apostles’
doctrine and fellowship, in the
breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Romans 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you
present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
Titus 3:14
And let our people also
learn to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.
What does “continue to believe” entail? Obedience to God’s commandments and doing good works is imperative if a person desires to continue to be saved.
Colossians 1:9-10
For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may
be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; 10 that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Acts 13:43
Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them,
persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.
**
If they were already saved and could not possibly lose their salvation, then the Apostles would have not had to persuade them
to continue in the
grace of God.**
Salvation is a lifelong process, not a one-time event.
