Believing that Jesus is actually Michael the Archangel (a creation of God) definitely alters their concept of the Holy Trinity. Our Risen Lord cannot be both “begotten, not made” and at the same time, created as an Angel by God.

I went to exadventist.com/Home/Intro/tabid/64/Default.aspx a site which was established by a former Adventist pastor. On the info page, he writes:

So, it all boils down to the SDA following a false prophet(ess), whose words are held to be “inspired”, just as scripture is. Reading through their beliefs that are non-biblical based reveals where they have been lead astray.
So you are saying that when I am looking for someone’s views I should listen to ex-members rather than the demoninations official position as expressed by themselves. On that basis I should accept ex-Catholics views that Catholics worship Mary as the truth rather than accept what the Church officially teaches.

Perhaps there is a different reality at work here. The Catholic Church is the one true Church built by Christ. It would be wrong for one to leave. So, no one leaving sees the light, but is wrong in doing so.

Adherents to other faith systems are likely right in leaving, and may be doing so as a result of seeing the light. They are unquestionably right if coming to Catholicism.

I don’t pretend that you believe this, although it is true. I believe that a faithful Catholic would see it this way.

Please consider this perspective, as what I have told you is true.

I didn’t realize that you were apparently SDA. Correct me if I am wrong. The SDA also teaches, (but not from their “official” website) that the Pope is the antichrist and that the Catholic Church is the “whore of Babylon”. Funny, isn’t it, that this is also not on their website, but is in books that they distribute? Why would I have to go elsewhere to determine this? There is nothing hidden that will not be brought to light. If the former SDA pastor is teaching falsehood, then refute him.

Anyway, are Ellen Gould White’s “visions” your guarantee that you have the truth? That is the point of this thread.

The church is not the foundation of anything. As I’ve pointed out elsewhere, this is a horrid mistranslation. Bulwark or support are better words, and they do not support the Catholic impression that the church is the “source” of truth or something that more truth gets built upon. Jesus Christ is the Foundation.
I don’t really see where Bulwark or Support are any less supportive of the Truth than foundation. A buwark is a defensive structure and a a support is used to hold something up. Just as the Church supports and defends the Truth of Christ’s teachings agains those who would change them.

Saw a picture of pope Benedictus XVI the other day, and couldn’t help but notice how his vestment more closely resembled those of the Pharisees and Saducees, rather than the simple and crude robes, worn by Jesus and His apostles(from whom the pope supposedly succeeded). But, it is all about presentation isn’t(the outside of the cup? Like the churches who believe that you have to wear a suit and tie to church, rather than Levi’s and a shirt. How can anyone say that it is disrespectable to God, if you don’t dress to the “nines” to go to worship? Ever hear a song entitled “Just as I Am”.It is sometimes difficult for me to see humility, when I gaze upon the ornate dress of the pope, complete with jewelry; especially when my Saviour wore sandals, and a plain robe:thumbsup:

I am not Seventh Day Adventist but I am willing to accept their statement as to their doctrine just as when I am looking for Catholic doctrine I go to the Catechism of the Catholic Church or the Vatican website.

The views on the Catholic Church are similar to those that were held by the original Reformers. However, not claiming to be infallible, Protestants can see that was wrong and change. I do not agree that Ellen White was a prophet but I don’t discount what they say their position is now.

Your concern with outward appearances is all you have, because you have no substantial truths. I promise you, that God is infinitely more pleased with the Pope who faithfully seeks to support and be a visible shepherd to Christ’s flock, than with those who, like you continually attack Christ’s Bride!

…The views on the Catholic Church are similar to those that were held by the original Reformers. However, not claiming to be infallible, Protestants can see that was wrong and change…
If Protestant churches had the protection of the Holy Spirit as does the Catholic Church, they would be infallible, and not have to change things because they’re wrong. Jesus only promised that the gates of Hell would not prevail against the Church He built, the Catholic Church, which has never once taught error in faith and morals binding on all the faithful. The churches built by men (Protestant) have already taught falsely, every one of them, and so the gates of Hell have at least partially prevailed against all of the Protestant churches. It’s no wonder Protestant churches are wrong on doctrine, wrong on Sacraments, and have no ministerial priesthood… they have no true authority from Christ.

Foundation…support…bulwark…
…pillar…ground…

none of these biblical translations delineate “source”, nor do they suggest “added truth”.

Nor does the Church claim to be the “source” of Truth. Nor does She “add” truths.

You’re stretching.

Hard.

I understand. You have to.

I expect better from you, 1beleevr. This was a cheap shot, and unfounded, and revealing of ignorance toward the history of the Church, the meaning of vestments, and the truth regarding gifts given to the Church for hundreds of years, and the comparison of that to the alleged “wealth” of Rome. Do some homework.

Trust me on this one. Our Chaplain at work is SDA. We have certainly had some interesting conversations. Recently, he provided an SDA written book to a co-worker in which the antichrist is identified as “the pope”. The Catholic Church is also referred to as the “whore of Babylon”.

Anyway, the former Adventist pastor is in a position to speak honestly, since he is still Christian, still adheres to the Commandments, and reveals beliefs that the “modern” SDA is not too happy to have generally known, but which they nevertheless still espouse.

As I said, the CC still recognizes their baptism as valid, based on the SDA belief in the Trinity.

It is also intersting that you are more interested in Looking at and commenting on the Popes vestments rather than at what the Church actually teaches. So who is it that is judging the outside of the cup without ever looking inside of it. (Eyes and Do not see, Ears and do not hear)

What churches are you refering to here. I know it isn’t the Catholic Church - at least not in my area. In point of fact I am a person who wishes more people would “dress to the nines” as you put it. I see far too many people dressing in ways that are, to my way of thinking, inappropriate or too casual for the occasion of receiving Our Lord - Body Blood Soul and Divnity - into our bodies at communion.

Also, it seems pretty funny to me that
On the one hand you express the attitude that it shouldn’t matter what you wear to worship, then
On the other hand you criticize what the Pope wears.🤷

I stand corrected. I just found this statement on the site of the Estate of Ellen G. White which is linked as a resource from the official Adventist site.
  1. Ellen White taught the heresy that Christ is the archangel Michael.
Code:
Answer: The archangel Michael's identity has been debated through the centuries. Both Ellen White and many non-Adventist Bible scholars equate Michael with Christ. This view does not require any lessening of Christ's full deity.

Jesus promised that The Holy Spirit shall guide us into all truth. I believe what Jesus said.
But what truth, EastAnglican?

There’s soooo many things that are interpreted differently by the 40,000+ Protestant denominations.

Do we baptize infants?
Are there 2 Sacraments or 7? Or are there none?
Is Saturday the Lord’s Day or Sunday?
Do we allow divorce?
Is it a sin to call on God or must we call Him Jehovah?
Will there be a Rapture?

etc etc etc

Obviously, the Holy Spirit could not have led all to believe these very differing “truths”.

So you are saying that when I am looking for someone’s views I should listen to ex-members rather than the demoninations official position as expressed by themselves.
I can answer that question. Best of all it’s an answer that Catholics and Protestants alike can agree on: If you’re talking about my church or denomination, you should go by our official position as expressed by ourselves; if you’re talking about some other church or denomination, you should go by what the ex-members have to say.

P.S. Remember that scene in the movie “Joan of Arc”, when the guy was asked what side he was on? His reply: “The same side that you’re on … the me side.” 🙂

At first, I did not know this, either. When I heard it, I had to look it up. I give credit to the SDA members for being faithful and hard working members of the Body of Christ. However, their reliance upon the writings of Ellen Gould White is a major flaw in their theological foundation. As time passes, the SDA have moderated their teaching to some extent. But, the many peculiar views that they hold will unfortunately always distance them from mainstream Christianity.

As a side note, I must strongly disagree with “scholars” who posit that equating the eternal Son of God with a created Angel does not diminish Christ’s deity.

Christ’s peace be with you.

For one, the Catholic church isn’t the only one with an apostolic claim.

Ckempston, Above you admit that the Catholic Church isn’t the only one with Apostolic Claim, at least we got you to admit that, I guess the Holy Spirit is Working to show you the Truth:thumbsup: So tell me in your opinion, which is the “other Church” that holds a claim to Apostolic Succession? Show me facts not hear say, show me documents, show me dates/year show me names, show me who are its successor that have not broken away from Apostles, to this vey day. or don’t bother writing back to me.

Ckemmpston, again since you admit there are two Churches that claim Apostolic Succesion then why for Heavensakes are YOU NOT APART OF ONE OF THEM? I mean it’s an Apostolic Succession for crying out loud, should’nt you be apart of one, and if not Why?
Let’s ask the question another way: who has the authority to determine which church is the true church?

You are correct in saying that in order to make an informed decision about Adventists, or any other denomination, including Catholics, you need to stay away from the anti movements, and go directly to the original source in question.

As far as the belief about “Michael” I haven’t time right now to dig up some notes I have on that, but I will come back in a day or so to post that info. I will say though that much of what I have seen here about what Adventists believe on this topic is mainly activist rhetoric and patently false.

It is interesting to note that official Adventist teachings do not rely on Ellen G White;s writings, nor was she the “author” or originator of any of our major doctrines. Our official teaching is simply that she can be used as an “authoritative source” of explanation regarding our official teachings, and many other Biblical topics.

I, for one, have really appreciated her contribution to our Church, and to my own spiritual growth, and Biblical understanding.

“Swimming the Tiber” is just a catchphrase. Don’t get hung up on it.

You may not know that certain teachings to which you hold are tracable to Martin Luther, but they are. So even without knowing it you are mired in the false teachings of the Protestant Reformation.

Since you don’t know much about how and where the Bible came from this can seem quite evident. However it is based upon a false assumption.
After the Incarnation there grew up a group of followers that were called “Christian”. They all belonged to a single “Church” That Christian Church was tagged with the Greek Word for Catholic, which simply means universal. Thus there was one Christian Church that was “Catholic” or “Universal”.
Members of this Universal Christian Church wrote memiors, and letters of instruction. This began to happen about 20 years after the ascention of Christ and continued unabated from that time until now. After about 3 and a half centuries, it was seen as good and necessary to gather together those writings of the Earliest Church that were believed to be inspired. In addition it was seen as prudent to include the inspired OT writings as support for the NT. It was by councils of the 'Universal" (that is catholic) Chrisitan Church at the End of the 4th Century that this work was accomplished creating the 72 book canon of the Bible.
This canon remained unchanged until about 500 years ago when Martin Luther and other Reformers removed decided to a different version of the OT and thus removed 7 books plus portions of 2 others from the Bible - Thus you are left with a 66 book canon.

Thus it can be seen that the Unified Christian Church was “Catholic” and that it is this unified Church that, 1) Wrote the texts of the Bible Books in the NT, 2) Assembled those books into the Bible canon, 3) Protected, defended, Translated, and taught from those books for 1000 years before martin Luther came along.
This Church NEVER taught that the Bible was the sole rule of faith - Which is what you believe. The bible does not teach this either. That Church taught - even before the Bible was compiled that Jesus founded a Church upon the Apostles and upon the Living Word, Himself.

So you see my friend - You are unwittingly influenced by Martin Luther and the false doctrine of Sola Scriptura.

The Bible also tells us “As Clear As Day” that Christ Founded a Church - AND
That Church is the “Pillar and Foundation of Truth”

It is indeed - It is Christ, living in His Church and present to us All in the Holy Eucharist.

Yes - But don’t confuse the written words of the Bible, which can be twisted and misunderstood. with the Living Word of Christ.

The Holy Spirit Guides - Yes, but the Church provides the counterbalance that prevents error. The Pillar of Truth is “The Church” - Look it up.

Again - you are confusing the written words of the Bible with THE WORD which is Christ.
As beautiful and necessary as The Bible is, - As Inspired and authoritative as it is, it is nothing without the proper guidance and interpretation.
Look into the bible and note that Christ founded a church and not a book.
Note that He gave that Church Authority
and that Paul (a “scripture only” pharasee convert) who says that it is “The Church” and not Scripture that is the pillar and foundation of Truth.

Peace
James
Good Saturday everyone!!! 🙂

Well,

I’m not hung up on a catchphrase. It was given to me and I took it from there until you explained what it was. I appreciate that.

Quite honestly, I don’t care about the teachings of Martin Luther. Never have. I care about the teachings of Jesus Christ, as we all should.

You can try to tell me that about the Bible all you want but the OT was written by Jews. The NT by Jewish Christians who never called themselves Catholic. Never once alluded to it. They were called Christians, nothing more and nothing less.

And in the Greek, unified isn’t (katholikos), it’s (enopoiimenos). That’s because they take on two different meanings. When Paul and Barnabas went to the church at Jerusalem, they were unified. So if the Bible isn’t the rule and guide of faith, why was it even canonized? I may be wrong but you are making it sound as though the church is more important than the Word. I mean, since when did the Bible stop being the Word of God?

And why is Martin Luther brought up again. All I know about the guy is the 99 Thesis, and after Reformation and Inquisition… 😦

Christ is in the mist of 2 or 3 gathered in his name in truth so that statement is true but the Holy Spirit lives in us though and there is no where in the Bible where it says the Holy Spirit needs a counterbalance. The Holy Spirit is without error…

And lastly, I’m not confusing the Word with the Word. Think about this. The same Paul that you mentioned also said that that “ALL scripture is God breathed.” Jesus fulfilled the Word. All scripture points to Jesus. He is the Word.
