Reuben J:
Thanks for telling us that for you, it’s critical thinking. 🙂
You omitted the fundamental part: “Acceptance of the axioms”.

If you aren’t aware of the underlying axioms, then it does not matter how good your critical thinking skills are, you will arrive at the wrong answer.
Let’s say the bread and the wine can be either symbolic or literal, depending on what your critical thinking derives at,
That depends upon the axioms that are used, not the critical thinking skills that are used.

Only after the axioms are identified, and examined, can critical thinking skills be applied.

BTW, it is quite possible for one to have a set of axioms that requires it to be a Simple Memorial and Transubstantiation, and Consubstantiation.

Hi All! I’m a newbie :o

Here’s a question:

If all the Bibles in the world were to suddenly disappear, what would Protestants do?

They would go directly to the Holy See and ask to make a withdrawal from the Deposit of Faith.

yeah baby!

🙂

Reconstruct it from memory.

Here’s a more appropriate question. What if the Pope and Priests disappeared, what would all the Catholics do? Build a statue of resemblance to the last known Pope and ask it to ask God to show them the way? I being a believer in Christ would continue my prayers as always with God.

No dougfreed, Jesus promised Peter he’d never leave us. So I will trust in that. I trust if all the catholic bishops, priests, monks, nuns and the Pope are gone then Jesus will guide and direct His Church as he has done for 2000 years. Faith.

I apologize for the confrontational tone in my post that elicited your ignorant response, oops I did it again. I didn’t intend to be mean! But I sure never accused you of worshiping statues. Shame on you!

you did not say i worshiped statues, and i thank you for that. Your tone is fine I’ve learned to accept all that comes from this board. If it riles you up that’s when you start to think on your own. Explain this to me if you would “They would go directly to the Holy See and ask to make a withdrawal from the Deposit of Faith.” Scripture is for learning and yes it would be devastating that our truth in print is lost, but to say we would withdraw from faith, come on…As far as statues thats another thread.

Thanks for being, well civilized. So many on the forum get into knock down drag outs and that’s truly not my intention.

By “making a withdrawal from the Deposit of Faith” I didn’t mean “withdraw” no…I meant “a withdrawal” like from a bank. Hence the play on the word “Deposit”. Sorry about that. I simply mean that the catholic Church is known for having the richest archive of documents “documenting” if you will our faith, known as The Deposit of Faith, yes yours and mine. It contains documents from all the way back to the first century. One of our scholars can tell you how far it goes back.

If say for instance a communist country were to invade and confinscate all our Christian religious materials, we would still have the Deposit of Faith guarded by the Holy See. But let’s just say that the Depost were also destroyed. I sincerely with all my heart, don’t believe that it would consitute all that Christ left us with. Christ promised not to leave us. He is the Living Word and both the Living Word and the Bible and other sources make up our Deposit of Faith. And whether you believe that means we as catholics or we as Christians, he still promised never to leave us. So that to me negates the theory of sola scriptura. God would not leave us with just the Bible that could be so loosely translated as it has been and that could be destroyed so easily.

That statement is ugly, immature and below the belt!

It is unworthy of a Christian to make such a remark.

This remark can only be made by an ignorant person.

Excellent - thank you for the e x p l a n a t i o n! You are absolutely right about the Sola Scriptura thing.

And to think that SS all started because our friend Luther decided to add the word o n l y in his transtion.

Perhaps Protestants here would like to tell us about this.

How do you understand scripture without referring to the relevant traditions that came with it?
Guess you never heard of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps you need to read Scripture for yourself and begin blocking out the notion you are receiving that you can’t possibly understand and interpret what you are reading.

Do you mean the meaning of the scripture’s message changes with time?
Not at all. I was actually thinking of something like this.

“Is it acceptable to eat food that has been sacrificed to idols?”

In Daniel 1, Daniel and his friends refuse to defile themselves by doing so. Paul in 1 Corinthians says that there is nothing wrong with eating food sacrificed to idols, but he also says that to do so in the presence of someone who believes it to be sinful would in itself be sinful. He closes the chapter by saying “if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall.”

You’re trying to say … ?

You’re trying to say … ?
A very basic teaching from the Old Testament is tossed out by Paul, but with a huge caveat. This is what I’ve referred to a few times by not having everything dogmatically defined and the Spirit leading two people to different conclusions on a non-essential idea.

Talking about tradition I have to share these passages I came across:

St Irenaeus of Lyons (AD 189) - “Since therefore we have such proofs, it is not necessary to seek the truth among others which it is easy to obtain from the Church; since the Apostles, like a rich man (depositing his money) in a bank, lodged in her hands most copiously all things pertaining to the truth, so that every man, whosoever will, can draw from her the water of life……For how stands the case? Suppose there arise a dispute relative to some important questions among us, should we not have recourse to the most ancient churches with which the apostles held constant conversation, and learn from them what is certain and clear in regard to the present questions? It is incumbent to obey the presbyters who are in the Church – those who, as I have shown, possess the succession from the apostles; those who, together with the succession of the episcopate, have received the infallible charism of truth, according to the good pleasure of the Father. But (it is also incumbent) to hold in suspicion others who depart from the primitive succession and assemble themselves together in any place whatsoever, either as heretics of perverse minds, or as schismatics puffed up and self-pleasing, or again as hypocrites, acting thus for the sake of lucre and vainglory. For all these have fallen from the truth” (Against Heresies 4:26:2)

St Irenaeus of Lyons (AD189) - “But since it would be too long to enumerate in such a volume as this the successions of all the churches, we shall confound all those who, in whatever manner, whether through self-satisfaction or vainglory, or through blindness and wicked opinion, assemble other than where it is proper, by pointing out here the successions of the bishops of the greatest and most ancient church known to all, founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious Apostles, Peter and Paul – that church which has the Tradition and which comes down to us after having been announced to men by the apostles. For with this Church, because of its superior origin, all churches must agree, that is, all the faithful in the whole world. And it is in her that the faithful everywhere have maintained the Apostolic Tradition.” (Against Heresies 3:3:2)

🙂
Thanks for the very informative and useful post.
