I’m the last one person to use a corny cultural reference () but I think the good people on this forum should consider the wisdom of the song from “Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores” (The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror VI”):

Well, what you have to keep in mind is that the actual monsters from “Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores” were Lard Lad, a giant neon cowboy (from the Duff Beer billboard), the three Zip Boys, the Red Devil Realty devil, Mr. Peanut, and a giant version of Kent Brockman, who all come to life and wreak havoc on Springfield. (Or as Marge Simpson put it, “These monsters are destroying everything and everyone we hold dear! And you kids should have jackets on.”)

But unlike most traditional monsters, these rampaging advertising mascots are dependent on people paying attention to them …

• Well sir, advertising is a funny thing. If people stop paying attention to it, pretty soon, it goes away.
• Like that old woman who couldn’t find the beef?
• Exactly. If you stop paying attention to the monsters, they’ll lose their powers.

So getting back to your question, the title of this thread (“Protestants are going to hell”) is not (technically) a rampaging 50-foot eyesore, or even a rampaging 40-foot eyesore, but it’s the closest thing I could come up with. In my experience, starting a thread with an offensive statement like “Protestant are going to hell”, “Catholics are going to hell”, what-have-you, does not prevent people from reading the thread, but actually draws people to the thread. In other words, the people who are offended by a thread very often support the offending thread. I’m sure you can see the similarity to “Attack of the 50-foot Eyesores”.

Fortunately, “Attack of the 50-foot Eyesores” doesn’t just point out the problem and then leave us to wallow in despair; rather it offers the solution:

You know, maybe a jingle would help.
Don’t watch the mon –
Don’t watch the…monsters-s-s.
Well, it’ll sound a lot better coming out of Paul Anka.

Actually I usually just scan for threads with “Protestant” in them… Id be equally likely to find threads like “Protestants are the greatest!”

Judging by the few posts thus far, I don’t think your theory of inferiority complex holds.

I don’t think of my faith as inferior or superior to anyone’s. It’s faith. Period. If we boast, we should boast in Christ.

True, this particular thread only has 12 replies (well, 13 now). It is possible that I underestimated Protestants’ ability-to-ignore-threads-that-ought-to-be-ignored.

Who am i to say if Protestants are going to heaven or not? Let God be the Ultimate Judge of that. I don’t think any right-minded Catholic here would claim that Protestants are doomed for hell either. I have many Protestant friends whom i still keep in touch with - despite our differences, we still make great conversations about God, Christianity, other religions and most of all, REALITY.

P.S. To be fair, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the reverse phenomenon also happens.

That is to say, I wouldn’t be surprised if Catholic posters on Protestant discussion forums tend to gravitate toward threads with titles like “Catholics are going to hell”, “Catholics, why do you worship Mary?”, “Catholics, why do you adhere to a man-made religion?”, etc.

If you want to look at me funny, as a Catholic, well then you agree with them too. No one will enter the Kingdom of Heaven unclean. No one, except for the Saints who are already there.

This, too, shows your ignorance of the Catholic understanding of Purgatory. When I said that “Purgatory … is temporary, and that everyone who goes there eventually ends up in heaven”, that does not in any way imply that any one “will enter the Kingdom of Heaven unclean”, because Purgatory is a place of purification (in the Catholic understanding anyhow; I don’t know about your denomination).

I am a Roman Catholic. You said that others will look at me funny for saying that all will go to purgatory. Make up your mind.
