Modernity is anti Catholic wherever it exists. It was anti Catholic in France in 1790, in again in France in 1890, and in Spain in 1935. It is no different in Mexico now, as it adopts a modern outlook. The Orthodox have struggled with the same issues, the largest and best example being Russia.

The article missed a few points on the history of the Church in Mexico. Since the 1920 the government made a effort to iliminate the Church. At one point there were only a few hundred priest in Mexico.
Even today the number of priests in the country is very small This has left many of the flock unguarded. Protestánts have spend millions trying to evangelize Latin America

What inspires your optimism?
Hi,

My faith in God. The church has survived many such trials, I am a firm advocate that ‘the truth will out’ over time; and the Catholic Church is the truth gifted to us by God incarnate. Ironically, in the UK a lot of Protestants (including Bishops and priests etc.) are returning to the Catholic Church. These things seem to happen in cycles, but out of the chaos will eventually come order and acceptance of the true faith.

God bless
