There are consequences for corporate sin just as thereare consequences for individual sin. There were grievous sins commited by the Catholic Church the consequences is a divided body.
So, the mature response is to throw the baby out with the bath water?

Jesus gave us a congregation which had all spiritual authority. The history of the Catholic Church is to…Many who have gone through this process have been placed into the Catholic Church so we know that there is life in Christ in the Catholic Church. It is all about Christ it is not about His congregation even though we are His bride.
You use several terms and concepts that are not in your bible. Where did you get them?

To review, the true Church contains:
  1. Matthew 16:18 "You are Kepha (Peter, 1st Pope), and on this rock I found my Church (Not “congregation”, not “bible”)
  2. Matthew 16:19, 18:18Whatever you bind on earth is bound in Heaven” (Apostolic authority - not “congregational” authority))
  3. Luke 10:16 “He who hears you (Apostles) hear me. He who rejects you rejects me. He who rejects me rejects the one who sent me” (Apostolic authority)
  4. Acts 1:15-26 The Apostles appointed successors, beginning with Matthias to replace judas. (Apostolic succession)
  5. John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (Apostles and their successors guided by the Holy Spirit into all truth)
  6. This has continued in an unbroken line, to this very day.
Note: One must be willing to separate the sins of individuals in the Church from the truth that the Church teaches.
Concept of Protestantism:
  1. Based on disobedience to and rejection of an authoritative Church
  2. Wrested the bible away from Holy Spirit-guided interpretive authority
  3. Rapidly accelerated the fracturing of the Body of Christ
  4. Discarded out of hand 5 of the 7 Sacraments
  5. Lost all claim to Apostolic succession
  6. Speaks to the ego - thousands of denominations the proof
The true Church is One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic. But, this is a hard teaching. Who can stand it? And many went their own way, developing diverse and innovative doctrines never before seen on earth. Even the reformers quickly split apart. Today, all disagree with each other to a surprising degree, but consistently criticize the Church which has given birth to their ancestors.

We are no longer in the 1500s.

There is no pope or concept of pope in the bible. Christ did not establish a pope.

I am a Bible-believing Christian and I will claim that till the day I die. Why? I believe what the Bible tells me.
The Bible establishes Jesus Christ as the head of the Church. Christ is the only head of the Church back then, till this day and in the future.

Wikipedia: “Bible believer (also Bible-believer, Bible-believing Christian, Bible-believing Church) is a self-description by conservative Christians to differentiate their teachings from others who see non- or extrabiblical tradition r as higher or equal in authority.”
Janet,

Scripture puts oral (non enscripturated) traditions of an apostle on the same footing as what has been enscripturated.[2 thes 2:15]

Hi Hisalone:

Since Jesus described a church with authority where we were to bring disputes for resolution with authority (so more than the invisible Church of believers) - where is that Church? He clearly spoke first to the apostles and gave them this authority. If the Church did not continue through the successors of the apostles - where is the Church we are to go? Is it the baptists, the calvinisits, the arminianis, methodists, etc.? I think you get the idea.

What do you make of that scripture? I ask this sincerely as a Protestant who has come to believe in the doctrine of apostolic succession, and thus towards Catholicism.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Blessings,

Brian
Brian,

I asked this question on a thread I started a couple years ago. If the Catholic Church “went off the rails,” as some claim, then where am I to go for the authority that the Apostles had? If someone could show me there was another church that taught with apostolic authority (and I disqualified the Eastern Orthodox churches as they believed many of the same things Protestants attack the Catholic Church for), then I would leave the Catholic Church for that church. The thread had a few hundred posts, but no one took up my challenge.

I disagree however with the notion that I am rejecting Christ as my Lord. I actually accepted Him as my Lord and Saviour and I am sure that this cannot be demonic.

“He who hears you (the Church, apostles and their successor bishops) hears me (Christ), and he who rejects you rejects me.”
Luke 10:16

It’s really all about YOU.

This surely is going nowhere. You mean to tell me that just because I do not accept the authority of your church with their “successors” I am an egocentric rejecter of Christ?
Who are you to tell me that I am not Christ-centred? He is my life and He is my Lord!
This is ridiculous and not worth the time of debate.
Jesus Christ died for my sins and I do not need the CC, the bishops and the pope to become more like Jesus Christ. All I need is Jesus Christ because I am already a member of His true Church which He founded and send out into the world. “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”

1 Corinthians 12:3
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

The Church and Christ are one. You can’t reject one without rejecting the other. The Bible says so.

There is no pope or concept of pope in the bible. Christ did not establish a pope.
There are few things MORE clear in the bible than the primacy of Peter and Christ establishing him as head of His Church.

This surely is going nowhere. You mean to tell me that just because I do not accept the authority of your church with their “successors” I am an egocentric rejecter of Christ?
Yes…because you know better.

Who are you to tell me that I am not Christ-centred?
I’m a child of God, baptised in the Holy Spirit, a member of His Church, founded on the Rock of St. Peter…that’s who I am to tell you you are all about YOU and YOUR interpretation of Scripture and YOUR religion…

He who hears you hears me…

Janet,

The Church and Christ are one. You can’t reject one without rejecting the other. The Bible says so.
I am a Bible-believing Christian. Of course I do not reject the Church of Jesus Christ.
I just reject the CC with its bishops, its dogmata, its “authority”, its magisterium, its “divine” revelations, its “sacred” tradition, its claims, its worldly power and its pope.
I am a follower of Jesus Christ and thereby I am a member of His Church alone. In Him I put my trust and my faith and He is the cornerstone and the solid rock His Church is founded upon.
