I have a genuine question for the Protestants on CAF. Do you believe that the Apostles and martyrs who shed their blood would recognize your church or denomination? Would they see their same faith in your church? Does it even matter if they did? Why or why not?

While this thread is geared toward Protestants, I would appreciate (name removed by moderator)ut from former Protestants as to what they believed in regards to this when they were in that particular church/denomination. But please no Protestant bashing!🙂 We already know what most of you Catholics believe about Protestants.

That is a great question and commend you on your spirit of peace.

I really like what St.Steven said to the Pharisee in the book of Acts Chapter 7. His words cut right to their hearts and provoked them to murder. Especially his words on the Temple Solomon made for Yahweh and quickly stated that God doesn’t reside in temples made of human hands “Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool; what house will ye build me”

Acts 7
37This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

38This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

39To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

40Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

41And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

42Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

43Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

44Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

45Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

46Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

47But Solomon built him an house.

48Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

49**Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
**
50Hath not my hand made all these things?

51Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

52Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

53Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

54When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

55But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

57Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

58And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Saul.

59And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

60And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Hi Andrew,

I don’t know, but Peter sure wouldn’t recognize your church; he would probably have a heart attack. But it wouldn’t take the apostles long to figure out who is Christian and who is not by what they see a obedience to and understanding of the Word of God.

John would probably have a heart attack if he found out about what has been taught concerning Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mary would probably go straight to Rome with Peter and John; if they has any strength left, to set the record straight. Wouldn’t that be a revival on a massive scale?

This could be a good premise for a story 🙂

Interesting question Andrew. The question that our Lord asked Peter three times was "Do you love Me? That’s what I believe the Apostles and martyrs would be looking for. And there are still martyrs today from all denominations who are dying for their faith in Christ.
My experience is that there are people in most Churches who truly love our Lord Jesus and there are people who are lukewarm. The latter they might have trouble recognizing.

Blessings,
Kathy

Why to Rome when Harpazo is an Orthodox inquirer? Also, that’s some real Christian love, I’ll tell ya…“I dunno, but YOUR church is definitely full of it!” Uh-huh…

Yes.
Absolutely.
We do nothing contrary to the NT writings. We evaluate all practices from the NT to see if they are in it or contradict its teachings.

If they entered into a Meeting for Worship, they would see the visible Body of Christ gathered as we wait upon Him. They would be welcome to offer vocal ministry to the Body of Christ gathered with them as the Spirit moved them to speak. I have no doubt they would recongnize brothers and sisters in faith.

Harpazo:

This is a very interesting question. I was brought up in the Baptist Church.

About 4 years ago (I am 54 now); I began to study the history of Christianity, Judaism, and transmission of Scripture. I, also, read the Bible cover-to-cover, and began comparing English translations of the Bible.

It did not take long for me to realize that the Early Church is unrecognizable within the Baptist Church. I felt betrayed by Baptist leaders. This did create a “spiritual crisis” for me, and I have been working through that crisis for the past four years.

I no longer accept Sola Scriptura. I think spirit lead “traditions,” such as the Trinity doctrine, has been handed down to us through the centuries.

I do not believe salvation comes by faith alone, as faith without works is dead. That does not mean that I believe we can “earn our salvation”; and by what I have read from Catholic Forum Members, Catholics do not believe in “earning salvation” either-Catholics please correct me if I am wrong. I also realized that Scripture reveals that one can actually lose their salvation. We are to keep the Commandments of our Lord and walk the path He created for us.

**So, to answer your question: No, I do not believe the “Apostles and martyrs who shed their blood would recognize the Baptist church.”
**
I just have not quite settled the issue of where I do belong. I know that I do not belong in the Baptist Church.

I think they would recognize a Jewish synagogue…
I think they may recognize the Catholic Mass as it is (I hear) very similar to the worship service offered in the Temple in Jerusalem, and not too distant from the service in a synagogue.

Of course the addition of the Supper of the Lord (Eucharistic Prayer) would also be recognizable to them.

If an apostle spent a Sunday morning worshiping in a Baptist Church they would think that they had died and gone to heaven or maybe had risen and were back in their old church

Greetings Brian!

I think many of the Apostles would recognize a synagogue service, but they might be puzzled as to why the Jews did not have the same faith in Christ in them. The caveat to the praxis of the faith is also having, well, the faith. 🙂 Would you say the Apostles and martyrs would you think they would see the same faith in the modern Jews that they had (well “have” would be better because they’re alive!)?

In Christ,
Andrew

Interesting comment. One of my Jewish friends told me that most Jews who convert to Christianity, choose Catholicism.

There have been a few that have become Orthodox. 😃 Namely, Fr. James Bernstein.

Probably not mine. We would probably be too wealthy for them.

Not that they wouldn’t like my church. But we would probably not be their first choice.

Now I could really see the apostles and martyrs relating to a poor, ethnic, store-front, inner city church. Or perhaps a house church in China that must be underground for fear of persecution. Or perhaps a similar body of believers in Libya. Or perhaps a congregation in Africa that that meets in a thatched hut and really has nothing to its name of this worlds goods. But it really loves the Lord Jesus Christ.

Those are the congregations I really see the apostles and martyrs relating to.

A comprehensive, contextual reading of the Bible, I assume?
I remain sceptical…

You mean with the instruments and the lack of liturgy?
