This is true that the Roman Road works but it speaks of “confess with you mouth,” HOW do you help the new convert confess if they have never done so before?
Well then, we might indeed go to a version of the Sinner’s Prayer, but I don’t think there’s any special virtue in it, other than what’s spelled out in the Roman Road. And that’s only Justification; Sanctification is a lifetime process.

I have the same attitude as Scott Hahn when he says that asking Christ into your life if greatly important, but where in Scripture is that idea? Where is the sinner’s prayer located?

It has always been my belief that most sinner’s prayers used by evangelicals ted to be based on the “Roman Road” model of confess with your mouth and you shall be saved. Sadly most evangelicals who are of the OSAS variety tend to be the get them to the altar and there is hardly any follow up or teaching on how to “be” a Christian.

Can you explain the lion to Nero thought of yours so that I can be clearer on this matter as well. I have looked back and the comment just seemed to have popped up out of the blue. Where do you get that a lion in scripture “could have been Nero?”
Uhhhh … crazzeto brought it up. His quote from Haydock addresses it.
You force me to make revision to the scoreboard … Padre 0 / brb 1 😃

The Sinner’s Prayer is embedded within the Roman Road link you cite. Note the Black script and the final summary.

Could it be this is going ignored as it does not fit into the the mold of Brb3’s salvation view?
My view is taken from scripture, both OT & NT, — as addressed by John, Peter, Paul, & Mary in the Gospels. I ignore nothing in scripture … not intentionally. I welcome being corrected … as your citation 2 Tim. 2:15 ] demands. Steel sharpens steel.

This is where quite frankly you are mixing Evangelicalism with Roman Catholicism and the two do not mix. … you are treading in dangerous waters and keeping one foot in Catholicism and one in Protestantism.
Dangerous ? And, you a Protestant, better knows how to mix Catholic and nonevangelicalism protestant beliefs, … and aptly able to avoid the dangers in dogma ?

What church do you have BOTH feet in … now that I observe you [a protestant] quoting the Catechism ?

Maybe its time you had your ‘coming home’ to Catholicism party … and declare your intensions to your Anglican colleagues.

If your purpose in mixing Evangelical and Catholic theologies (which you have been doing in numerous threads on CAF) is to pretend there is no difference between them so as to intice them to become Catholics, that is rather disingenuous. If there is no difference between them, why should they become Catholic?
Why not be honest about it? There ARE MAJOR theological differences between Evangelical and Catholic theologies.
As has been reiterated on this thread by Catholic and Protestant alike, there IS NO Catholic equivilent to the ‘sinner’s prayer’. It was a creation of 19th century revivalists that mainline Protestants reject.
Before I returned to the Church I spent time with conservative Episcopals. When this issue of a ‘sinner’s prayer’ came up they pointed out that we have always had, in the Church, a simple confession. It is called The Apostle’s Creed. I think both Catholic and mainline Protestant agree on that point.

The reason that I can quote the catechism is there are some Anglican parishes that use it for their catechism. I served one of those parishes for 3 years. It has nothing to do with having both feet in.

I am going to have to agree also with justaservant in that I have also read your posts and they mix the evangelical message with the Catholic.
Padrej used the catechism to correct your assumption that you could interpret the Bible because the Bible refers to the common people in the pew as “saints.” as he aptly points out it is the Church’s sole responsibility to do this. Now when corrected as “Iron sharpens iron” or steel on steel depending on your translation you attack him?😦 Last I remember you were the one that was going to welcome being corrected that way. Just because the correction came from an Anglican does not mean that it is any less a correction.

It is very common for some Anglicans to use the Catholic Catechism in their parish and sadly they tend to know if better than most Catholics and can quote it paragraph and line like a Baptist can quote scripture. So in Padrej’s case it is hardly a matter of having both feet in one denomination or another.

Apparently not.

Firstly, FrJohn & Padre are big boys, scholarly men of much learning. They can defend themselves … as their replies demonstrate.

Now, to your charge … questioning my honesty. I think that is unsupportable / unbecoming of a servant of our Lord. Let’s debate the thread topic, not make spurious charges against the brethren, who were not born with Catholic understandings. This is a Non-Catholic sector … allow those of Protestant and other beginnings to express themselves, w/o psychoanalyzing their motives.

Now, about the Major Theological differences between Protestant and Catholic. You know I became a convert as Evangelical … and you a Catholic. We two will NEVER, ever EXACTLY share the same dogma. When I was making my early transition into the Catholic Church, I would read in Catholic books that is was almost an impossibility that I would ever complete the Journey. Words to the effect “It takes a miracle for an Evangelical to convert to Catholicism” were encountered in Catholic writings. There have been hundreds of conflicts in dogma I had to work thru, to rewire my brain correctly. I’ve still not resolved all the conflicts. I’m still on my journey to learn the full teachings of the Church. It could easily take me another 3-4 years to learn all the nuances of Catholicism. But, I am making progress. I love the dialog here at CAF, and many here have been patient with me, and ‘explained the fuller truths of the faith to me’. People like Pax, Guanophore, Mikeledes, FCEGM — they are the superstar apologists for Catholicism. And, now I’m learning alot from FrJohn & even the Protestant Padre !!🙂

For many here, new to the Catholic Faith, this is the only seminary training we will ever get. We pose our questions, state our understandings … and wait for the professors to critique and correct. If I was ‘thin-skinned’ I would never of converted. So many hard-core Catholics abused, offended me early on, … several years ago. They made great sport of my ignorance of Catholic dogma. But, I’m God’s Evangelical Miracle … I’m a survivor that made it far enough to taste and see, of the True Presence in the Eucharist. I’m a Confirmed Catholic … and no misunderstandings of a few doctrines/dogma will ever remove that fact. I’m long past the DANGER ZONE gauntlet, that the hard-core Catholics construct for the wayward schismatics. Those ‘No Savation Outside the Catholic Church’ hyper-Orthodox Catholics … that neglect the teachings of the Popes on this matter.

I watch Marcus Grodi’s JOURNEY HOME, EWTN program. It’s amazing how many of the Catholic Converts still love and WILL NOT DISAVOW their Protestant beginnings. One’s initial faith and roots cannot be entirely erased, and should not be. Apollos was a genuine believer, but needed a tutorial and proper baptism. Many Protestants share Apollos’ predicament, but have had a trinitarian baptism. But, they still need that tutorial and the Church Sacraments … namely the Eucharist.

IMO, the biggest ‘Major Theological’ difference between Catholic and Protestant doctrine is the Eucharist. All others pale in comparison, not nearly so errant. And yes, some reject the Trinity … that too is a Major errant difference. :hug1:

OK … lets really have some fun with this. The Olympic scoreboard // FrJohn-Gold, brb-Silver, Padre - Bronze

When you have the conviction to convert to the Church of the Apostles … you will move up to Diamond Grade Metal [medal]

@bbr3,

I think you’re quite confused with regard to the Journey Home and the average guest not disavowing their Protistant beginings. These people haven’t accepted the error of pluralism, something you pulmigate here. They fundamentally reject theologies such as the sinners prayer, they accept the Catholic Church as the true church and funadmentally reject their old beliefs where they dipart from good orthodox doctrine.

But they don’t reject the good that did exist, the love of Christ and Scripture. That is what we (at least should) hold in common with protistants and this is always useful as a Christian. Indeed I suggest it’s key to success, but again… It doen’t mean these people are out there trying to pulmigate bizzar evangelical / catholic hybird theologies. Doing what you’re trying to do ends in heresy, which is not where you want to be.

I would exhort you to reexamin what you beleive, because one can not accept both evangelical and Catholic views. They are mutally exclusive on many levels.

They now REJECT the SINNER’s PRAYER ?? PLEASE, NO !!!

Millions/Billions of Protestants were Reborn by praying the prayer. To now reject it would be an absolute disaster / tantamount to rejection of their conversion. For Many, Many protestants … the Sinner’s Prayer gave them LIFE. Don’t even think of expecting them to reject their INITIAL salvation … that moment they stood at the foot of the Cross and made their first full CONTRITE CONFESSION, and Christ breathed/INFUSED the H.S. into them.

Question: If Padrej already has valid Roman Catholic lines in his lines of Apostolic succession from a validly consecrated Roman Catholic bishop can you still claim that he is not amongst the apostles? Maybe you had better revise the scoreboard.😉

You obviously have no idea that becoming Catholic means that you are NOT giving up your salvation but rather finding it. I do agree that there are some who have been reborn by that prayer as our catechism states that there are some with faith outside our walls. The problem becomes when you go through the process of becoming a practicing Roman Catholic you renounce that practice as it runs contrary to Catholic teaching and what the apostles taught.

Hey brb! No one becomes an expert in Catholic theology overnight. I´ve studied Catholic theology for a while now and I still don´t consider myself an expert. There is always more to learn. So I urge you to continue to take advantage of the opportunity this forum gives you to learn about the Catholic faith! May God richly bless you!

In Christ,
Michael
