Protestants: What is the oddest thing about Catholicism?

Ok time to get back to the topic at hand…abortion has been discussed ad nauseum on other threads

I am a Catholic but I was Protestant for 24 years, so here goes

I have a problem or find it “odd” that the Catholic church will accept and recognize baptisms from other churches as long as they are done in the name of the trinity but will not recognize or accept marriages done in other churches, even though they are both sacraments and very important.

My problem is that, according to the Church, if you are married outside of the CC then your marriage is INVALID and if you have sexual relations with your spouse you are in mortal sin and considered a fornicator

So if you follow logically…anyone married outside of the Church are fornicators and are going to die in mortal sin and go to hell…b/c according to the CC if you die in mortal sin you go to hell

But i have seen countless times on this thread and other places Catholics saying they can’t determine that Protestants or others are going to Hell b/c they don’t know.

Doesn’t make sense to me b/c if you follow the logic the Catholic Church is saying they are going to hell, and my entire family of protestants weren’t married and fornicated.

In my opinion this is a bunch of bull.
Two non-Catholics married outside the Catholic church is indeed recognized as valid by the Church, so long as neither party is on their second, third, or eighth spouse. We asked our priest when my husband was going through RCIA, and he said we were fine and our marriage is perfectly valid. Non-Catholics are not bound by Catholic Church rules and regulations.

Now, if a Catholic marries outside the Church without first getting a dispensation, then there can be problems, but most of the time all that is required is a convalidation.

I haven’t participated in this particular abortion discussion, but my only comments…

I really need to ask for forgiveness, and an open mind. Although I DO NOT agree with abortions, I need to remember that it’s not always so black and white and that many women who have abortions are just simply put in really difficult situations that I cannot begin to understand. Again, I still totally disagree with abortions, but instead of getting so angry and judgmental, I need to instead pray for these people.

I, too, will be praying for you Carjack.
I heard one pro-life worker describe the terror/panic a woman can feel when confronted with an unplanned pregnancy as like the desperation a wild animal feels when it will chew its own foot off to get out of a trap.

I don’t agree. In fact I find it odd that a soul would inhabit a being without consciousness, non-sentient, as is the case with embryos and fetuses. Consciousness is late in developing. This is one of my main problems with the attempt to put the undeveloped/unborn on the same plane as fully developed/born/sentient beings. They aren’t equal. They both have a kind of life, but one is aware of itself and able to sustain itself without the aid of another human body. Once a fetus has reached the stage where it can survive outside the womb, even with the aid of machines, I would say that a c-section should be done instead of an aboriton. The baby could then be put on life support as any premie would. Also there was an earlier comment on breathing air as oppossed to aminoic (sp?) fluid and a response mentioning those who were unable to breath on their own (i.e., requiring a respirator). The differnce is that it is still oxygen they are breathing (the born and anyone on a respirator). There is no comparison.
SWAN,

What leaves our body when we Die? …The answer is “Our Soul”!Once our souls leave our bodies we are DEAD!

At conception a SOUL is given, Cause its our souls that keeps are bodies alive.

People who believe like you have abortions or are ok with abortions. They think it is only a blob, yes, it looks like a blob but a blob with a SOUL.

This sounds funny but True, what about an unconscious/coma person, does that mean becasue they are unconscious/coma they don’t have a Soul, since you say they have to be conscious to have a soul.

Excuse me. Pushing them out.😃 Why should they abstain? They are married and should express their love for each other through sexual intercourse. They are being responsible by using birth control so that no unwanted children get “pushed” out. No disrespect to women who want to have their precious “miracles”.
Carjack,

I read your profile it says you are a baptized Catholic?

However your profile does not state any denomination or non denomination Just Curious?

So what are they Percious “Miracles” or Unwanted Miracles? You contradict yourself, your own words condemn you, for you know they are Miracles, Miracles from GOD!

How many Precious Miracles have you flushed down the toilet?
When Judgement day arrives you will be accountable for each and every one. Ofcourse also your husband.

And how many percious Miracles do you have alive that could have been flushed down the toilet? it must be very sad to have a mother who believes that they can flush down God’s Miracle.

We are not a person till we are born. That is my point, since you asked. 😃
Well, carjack, I don’t know about you, but I sure was, as were my 3 children. I even have ultrasound images from very early in their development that clearly shows them!

Perhaps YOU were a frog or a pig or a mosquito, but most other HUMANS I know were indeed a person before they were born. In fact, most were persons about 9 months before they emerged from the uterus. (A few came earlier, though).

Thanks for clearing that up. Someone told me differently and it really upset me.

The problem in drawing a line is that you’ll be hard pressed to find a good place to put it…

Humanity cannot be an event witnessed by itself, because by that logic, we will never be human. We must acknowledge that we are human from the moment we are created, as stated in Genesis:
God said, ‘Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves, and let them be masters of the fish of the sea, the birds of heaven, the cattle, all the wild beasts and all the reptiles that crawl upon the earth’.
God created man in the image of himself, in the image of God he created him, male and female he created them.
Who are we to decide who is human and who is not? That is arrogance if we think we hold that power, for being a human means we have a body and a soul, we have God in our hearts and we are sinners. If you say I am not human, then you are speaking to yourself also. For the criteria that you mark my humanity against is the same that shall be applied to you.

The Golden Rule of Christianity, regardless of denomination is Do unto others, as they would do unto you. In essence, in order for you to be regarded as human, even before the point of birth, and after the moment of death, you must regard your children and brethren as human also. As Man (male and female), we are endowed with an immortal soul. We have a body, and yes, while awesome, is only temporary.

If we regard the flesh as the only thing being regarded as human, then we are no better than the beasts who roam this land.

Contraception is the same deal. You are trying to control life if you use it. But life is a gift. You again, seek the flesh and not the spirit. For sex is the most sacred and intimate act that marriage provides. The purpose of it is two fold, and both are physical and spiritual in nature.

The first, is to create life. Every life we create is a gift given to us by God, and indeed Scripture says to go forth and multiply, which is a mark of being created in His likeness, we can self-replicate.

The second, is the expression of love between a husband and wife. It is sharing each other the love you feel for one another, to give each other pleasure, and to make your relationship grow and become infinitely closer as you literally become one flesh. For, in the midst of that pleasure, of that mutual love you feel for one another, comes life itself.

We are not fit to say who is human and when, only to welcome it when it comes, be it in the womb, when our Lord knew us even then, or when they are welcomed into the wide world, where our jobs as parents take an expected and brilliant turn to show our child the world, after being nestled in the warmth of their mother, and wrapped in the loving support of their father.

You obviously did not read all the posts and were quick to judge me. God will make you answer for all your sins as well. I don’t have children. If I had them, maybe I would not have felt the way I did. I contradicted myself because I am working through my inner turmoil. I do not feel all children can be flushed down the toilet. :crying: I am dealing with my demons. Sorry, you do not understand. I hope that if I inadvertantly flushed any of my babies down the toilet, that God and they forgive me, for I did not know what I did in regards to the contraception. I am just learning. I shared my testimony. I hope that anyone who hears it can learn from it and not condemn me too harshly, considering that I had pills, depro vera, the patch, and condoms shoved down my throat since I was thirteen. The BC situation is hard to deal with, but I am learning that my ways were wrong. 😊

Nice try, it is because the “CHILD” is correctly recognized as a human being.
This may have been addressed later on in the thread, but I’m not sure what state you are from…and the law may be different in each state

But in some areas if a woman who is pregnant is murdered the killer cannot be charged with double murder unless the baby was seen as being viable outside of the womb…I even heard of one case in which the baby was ripped outside of the womb but it wasn’t considered murder b/c the baby never took a breath.

If they did classify it as murder it would render abortion illegal. So no…you are wrong at least in the states that approve abortion.

Everything is about the embryos and not for the people who were born out of a uterus. Shall i get more specific?
If two people mistakenly, for lack of a better word, produce a child that they do not want, then they shouldn’t suffer any consequences? The unborn person without the voice doesn’t deserve a chance at life? Given a chance that child could become their greatest blessing, and at the least a challenge to their selfishness. The people who wanted sexual gratification without a price tag are the most important in the scenario? Relationships that use people for sex and put their own needs before others have names. Our society is very utilitarian. You may like the book " Love and Responsibility" by our late Pope. It explores an whole other side of love, sex and responsibily.

Carjack, obviously that person has not been keeping current. You have confessed your sins, you have expressed remorse and you have promised to amend your life. Jesus Christ Himself has already forgiven you. You should, of course, make a sacramental confession, but Christ in His mercy has already made you whole. You must now forgive yourself. Sometimes, that is the hardest thing to do. To acknowlege your lost child, to name the child, to even have a memorial, these things help in the healing process. I and I am sure, all the others that know your story, will be praying for your healing. Please, above all, study what the Church teaches about this whole issue. You may also want to explore RCIA and a return to the sacraments. You have nothing to lose and you have eternity to gain.

Took me a while to put my finger on this – came up with situations or aspects of Catholicism and then realised that the underpining them is the requirement to be obedient ie to follow the Church’s teachings whether you agree with them or not.

That’s one of the things that makes the Catholic Church so special. You want to believe something else, go ahead… but then you’re not a Catholic.

the Cafeteria is Closed!!!

To truly understand this you must remember that the Catholic Faith is bounded by the Love that Christ has for us: He loves us, laid down His life for us and told us that we have to do what The Father asks of us.

The problem comes when you have people interpreting for themselves what it is that the Father wants us to do. This is the difference for us (The Catholic Church) and all the rest: We rely on The Pope, The Magesterium and Tradition, not to mention 2000 years of time tested Faith, to make sure we are doing what Christ and the Father want us to do. Not an “inner peace” or a single person in a church who says “this is right, but that is wrong”.

Oh, dear. I am so sorry that you too have had those horrible drugs shoved down your throat (norplant is the worse thing man has ever created). I thought I was doing it right, I thought I was in control and I too am reeling from the things I did wrong. I have told God my sorrow for my sin, but as ever there is an echo of sadness in head and heart that will ring for ever… a knowledge of the damage that I did to the Love of God for His Creation, the damage I did for my own family, and the damage I did to myself.

I will pray for you and your heart. Be comforted by Him who always loves us.

Remember that one of the problems with this forum is that someone will read an answer and reply, but it could be a while before it comes to a computer, or someone else reads it or… It is not like having a conversation.

We’re here for you. We will pray for you and offer up one of those prayers that you used to love to pray, maybe the Rosary?

Can some others here pledge to pray for carjack and her situation? I will pray today and offer a Mass for her on Sunday.

carjack – you need to ABANDON this thread. Too many people jumping in here without reading the whole thing. I offered my Mass for you this morning.

Excellent advice. I was going to come in here and post:

[SIGN]Lay off carjack, people![/SIGN]

but I agree with you, it would be better if she just unsubscribed herself from the thread. She doesn’t need any more lemon juice for her paper cut, figuratively speaking. 😦

There is an old saying (from Ignatius of Loyola) that “We should always be disposed to believe that which appears to us to be white is really black, if the hierarchy of the church so decides.” My anti-Catholic grandmother used to tell me that in order to bolster her view that the Catholic Church was perfectly demonic. As a Bible-Christian, I could well believe this, since it was “obvious” that so much in Catholic practice was “unbiblical” or just plain insultingly stupid.

But as I matured and learned more about the faith – as an Anglican – gradually, more and more of the “Catholic” things that I had seen as “black” (sacraments, devotions, traditions) had over the years become “white.” One day, I realized that had I simply been able to accept Catholic teaching, and to question it with an open mind in order to learn what the Church REALLY teaches and WHY, I would have been much closer to reality and to Our Lord.

Early in our marriage, as non-Catholics, we merrily contracepted, using the pill. Until one day it just hit me that this whole mentality was just plain WRONG. I couldn’t really give a good argument for it, but it was such a strong intuition that I knew I had to deal with it RIGHT NOW. Fortunately, DH agreed wholeheartedly, and that was the end of THAT. What a GREAT moment in our marriage.

When I came into the Church, confessing that as one of the great sorrows and sins of my life was one of the most liberating points of that entirely liberating confession!

so are you saying that you were struck with the wrong-ness of artificial birth control while you were a Protestant? Or were you a fallen away Catholic or waht?

thanks…
