Interesting question. I’m reading a book right now called ‘Catholic Does Not Equal The Vatican’ so from a progressive Catholic perspective it would not be the end of the Catholic faith if the Vatican ceased to be.

In the movie, The Pelican Brief, starring Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts, there is a scene in which someone is assasinated in a crowded plaza. After the sound of the gunshot, panic ensues with people wildly running in all directions until the camera pulls back to reveal a large empty concourse with a single body lying in a pool of blood.
That’s what Christianity would look like without the Catholic Church.

Which begs the question “Are you Catholic if you do not believe or follow everything that ‘Rome’ teaches”?
If the answer is something like, I don’t understand everything that the Catholic Church teaches, but I will submit to Her authority and try to gain that understanding, then sure.
If the answer is more like “The Chruch teachers error on X, Y and Z and I will never be convinced otherwise” then I think not.

Depends on which side you are on. A progressive would say that the Vatican has gone astray so if the Church gets back to the original teachings of Christ that would be progress but not really anything new.

I’m sure a “progressive” would say that and they may even call themselves “Cathlolic” while they say it, but by definiton the previous statment would exclude them from communion with that “astray” Roman Catholic Church.

I used to know some Franciscans who did not believe alot of things that are considered official teaching. One even called himself a Protestant yet he belonged to a Catholic Order. The Church is divided between the progressives and the reactionaries, both argue that they are right and neither will be leaving anytime soon.
