Protestants: What would Christianity look like if the Catholic Church were to disappear tomorrow?

I’m not quite sure what to think – Christianity would have a different face, to be sure. A lot would depend on how the rest of Christianity would be guided by the Holy Spirit. Certainly, I believe, God would not choose to let the church catholic slide into obscurity. Then, too, what would happen to all those who are now in communion with the Catholic Church. Would they remain Christian or would they disappear with the Church?

Despite all the imaginings of what might happen, I think that the Christian community would be diminished without the voice of the Catholic Church.

Well there would be no more Mass as I know it.

I think the Vatican would become some kind of museum .

The Holy Spirit will continue to live in the hearts of Christians. There will be pastors who will continue to have worship services as they do now.

Maryism and rosary beads will no longer be. Statues will be looked upon as art.

The Holy Spirit will continue to live within us. Perhaps, with no catholic church to “hate” it will eventually be looked upon more kindly and even missed.

I suspect the future church ( in this imaginary scene) will look and sound less protestant and with just a tad little touch of catholic in it.
 
Ugh! It would look like ‘Protestianity’ all over the place, I guess?!? Whatever that means…:eek:😃

I think that this is a rather silly question and one that is not even a possibility. The Church has been here for some 2000 years. We have the assurance from Christ Himself that it will continue until the end of time. Speculating on “what ifs” that are not possible are more of a waste of time than playing golf.

Statues by the way are not looked at by Catholics as anything more than representations of the person being honored. Like the picture of a spouse and/or children that sits upon a desk at work. So I wouldn’t think of this as a change, since statues are NOT thought of as anything more than what they are.
 
How can anyone really answer this question. For one thing it never happened so you don’t know, it would all be speculation. See its kinda like a question that was asked to me in a interview to be a firefighter, the question was, How would you react if you found a child dead in a house fire or in a car crash. I pondered this question and search my soul because this was a difficult question to answer, but after thinking about it I said I don’t know until it happens.They said that was the best answer they ever heard. Because the truth of the matter is you really don’t know until it happens. As far as the question, I look at it in the same way,

I think you may have an inkling. If all the faithful disappeared tomorrow I imagine the Roman Catholic Church would simply resurrect from the remaing shards of the Protestant and Orthodox faiths.

Rev Kev, it’s simply an excursion into the hypothetical, a fun exercise to fuel a discussion.

Kind of like a corollary thread started a few years back: What Would a Catholic America Look Like? I would hope that posters there understood that this scenario is unlikely, but it’s still fun to discuss and muse and ponder.
