Protestants would going to a Catholic Mass be considered wrong for you to do?

My wife, Who belongs to the RLDS church, and I were married in the Catholic church that I grew up in. Her mothers side of the family are Baptists. Both sides of her family and freinds came to the wedding. Nobody burst into flames, even when we put flowers in front of the statue of the Blessed Virgin. Go figure.😃

So what is it that worries alot of protestants about going to a Catholic service?
I have no qualms about going to Mass. I go every now-and-again. I think that some Protestants are just so worried that they won’t know what to do, or in what order to do it. Of course, there are missals, and many churches have them in the pews (but not all). It’s a shock-factor  . Masses are SO different from many Protestant services; more elaborate, more ornate, with rituals and chants that are a turn-off for Protestants. Plus, many Protestant denominations are very welcoming of guests, having greeters at the doors and (in my church) two or three minutes for greeting visitors during the service. While church should not be soley a social gathering, it’s always nice to be greeted and welcomed…something that Mass affords little of. Even the “peace be with you” time is short-lived and feels ackward 😊 and compulsory.

I have being to a many of Mass in my time as my wife use to be a Catholic.

And don’t you miss the fullness of the faith and everyone on the same sheet of paper.
In theory, they’re on the same sheet of paper. It discourages me to look around and see so many parishoners not singing along and some doing the ‘Judas Shuffle’ (as Scott Hahn calls it…leaving right after you receive Eucharist). Hardly anyone really cares that they’re there. It’s like a funeral…wake up, people Christ is RISEN!

That’s the problem everyone is on the wrong sheet of paper, I said I have being to a many of mass, I just don’t believe in the way the Catholics Faith have also being to every church there is in my life time, here again, I keep what I got.

When I got Married I only had one co-worker come to my wedding I got the notion that they did not want to step foot into a Catholic Church. Exspecially when everyone went to another guys wedding shortly after. I have a new Job now and my mom just passed away I had a long term friend come who I also work with but someone else at work warned him about going to my moms memorial Mass. So what is it that worries alot of protestants about going to a Catholic service?
Well I am a Protestant and I’ve been to Catholic Masses quite a lot of time, inclusive funerals …
but for “memorial Mass” never, first nobody ever invited me to attend and since I’m not sure what it is I would ask them questions first ; if it is a Mass where you pray for a dead person well I think I wouldn’t go because I would feel very ill at ease since I think we shouldn’t …
I know that in other Masses Catholics pray for the dead too, but in the case of a memorial mass the whole mass would revolve around it ( if I am not mistaken ) and I think that would make me feel to ill at ease …

in masses Catholics usually pray Mary ( they say the Hail Mary prayer ), even if I don’t agree, well I “keep quiet” during this time without associating, but I could not go to a special Mass on August 15th for example, because it would revolve around Mary and the result would be the same …

when I go to a “usual” Mass, I know what happens so even if I don’t agree with everything I know “beforehand”, so I am not “shocked” …

I read some statistics some time ago, about mixed Catholic couples : I’m French, in France there are more mixed Protestant-Catholic couples than … Protestant-Protestant couples …
probably because there aren’t a lot of Protestants ( about 2% of the population, for Catholics it’s about 80%… ):harp:

To be honest, the question could be turned around. I’ve known Catholics that would not step foot in a Protestant church for any reason. So I would find it problematic for a Catholic to complain of a Protestant not being willing to step into a Catholic church.

Why ? are they so scared of us ?:extrahappy:

The Hail Mary is not a part of the Mass, and no Mass **ever **revolves around Mary. Every Mass is entirely about the Sacrifice of Christ.

We do ask Mary and all the angels and saints to pray for us during the general confession, but that’s the only mention of her I can think of…

I’m just scared of the pentecostals and the westboro baptist Church!

I’m pretty much ok with everyone else, although I really don’t like the idea of those “mega-churches” with the food court and shops and the big TV screens and plush armchairs. I couldn’t imagine anything more divorced from the purpose of liturgy.

Earlier this week, I was invited to a Mass by a friend of mine, but I had to turn him down. It occurred at the same time as the Episcopal Holy Eucharist and I knew I couldn’t partake in communion if I went to Mass. When I told my friend this (and he knows I’m not RC), he just said I shouldn’t worry about it and take communion anyway and admitted that many NCCs take communion at the Mass. Although I would not believe it sinful to take a communion at Mass, I also recognize the idea Paul put forth in Romans 14. Basically, if someone thinks something is sinful, then don’t do it around them if at all possible. Obviously, if I were in a place where there was only an RC Church, then I might feel differently, but I had the opportunity to attend Episcopal Holy Eucharist, so the way I see it there would be no reason to merely create further animosity and be the proverbial stumbling block to others.

Thus, I didn’t attend Mass, but not because I thought it would inherently ‘wrong’ or something.

Even on 15th August ? I don’t know since I’ve never tried on that particular day …
What do you mean by “the Hail Mary is not part of the Mass” ? I just meant that it is said in each Mass, at least I think so, because it was said at each Mass I attended … but maybe it is different in the United States ( I’m in France )

Well, I’m not scared of Pentecostals even if I don’t belong to the charismatic trend, but maybe French Pentecostals are more “moderate” than American ones ; among French Evangelicals, there are charismatic groups I would be afraid of ( but the same is true for some Catholic charismatic groups … )

I don’t know the Baptist church you mentioned …too far from me ( I’m in France )

In my country there aren’t “mega-churches” like the ones you describe, usually Evangelical groups are quite small…
and Reformed and Lutheran churches aren’t very big either, anyway there are few Protestants in France ( about 2% of the population )

Yes, even on August the 15th. Catholics believe the Mass to be a re-presentation of the Sacrifice of Christ, and every Mass is focused entirely on that. The Eucharist - which is the offering of Christ’s Body and Blood on the altar (the Sacrifice) - is the focus and purpose of every Mass.

The rubrics of the Mass do not provide for a Hail Mary to be said. If it is said, that is a form of liturgical abuse (although a mild form - there are many worse abuses). Do you remember at which point of the Mass the Hail Mary is said?

No, I don’t remember, because I don’t go to Mass regularly !!! ( since I am a Protestant ) ; I am not sure but it seems : before the Eucharist ( I don’t mean JUST before , but sometime before … )
Next time I go to Mass I’ll try to remember … to remember !!!

I don’t pretend to be an expert on what pentecostals do in their Churches, but I’m afraid of entering one of them and experiencing something like this:

“Holy Laughter” and people dancing in the aisles really irks me.

It’s the church that pickets the funerals of American soldiers and teaches that the Iraq War is God’s judgment upon America for “tolerating” homosexuals. They believe that anyone who isn’t a member of their congregation (which is composed of two families) is condemned to hell. They’re based in Topeka, Kansas, and have become famous for the signs they carry around, the most famous of which reads “God Hates Fags”.

Don’t worry! It’s not important. Sometimes a rosary is said before Mass (usually during the week), but a hail Mary is not said during the Mass itself. If it took place during the actual Mass, it shouldn’t have.

I’ve heard of that type of things, people laughing or barking or falling on the ground , fainting and so on : I would be scared of that too ; in France the “original” Pentecostals don’t accept this type of things, but in some charismatic groups they do, and I’m not sure about what Catholic charismatic groups “tolerate” …

the Baptist church you mention must be … quite special … sounds quite sectarian to me, especially if it is formed of only …two families … and their attitude is terrible ( what you mention )

Actually my (Methodist) pastor requires all of the young people who are being confirmed, to attend a Catholic mass…He takes them as a group, to a Saturday afternoon/evening vigil mass.
It is considered to be part of becoming a mature Christian, to attend the services of other Christians, and to understand how others worship…

PS: I have never in my life ever even heard of a “Hail Mary” being said in a Catholic mass…:nope:Not any that I have ever been to, not any that I have ever heard about from others. It sounds more like maybe attending a special prayer service outside of mass to me…🤷
