What is wrong with Southern Baptists? I will be starting RCIA in a couple of weeks, and have been wanting to ‘officially’ join the Church for quite sometime.

The ‘pastor’ is wanting to come to my home and visit with my wife and I and try to talk some ‘sense’ into us. The entire baptist church we stopped attending regularly along time ago is wanting to pray for us because we are leaving Christianity.

My mother tells me I am parting from the religion of my upbringing! I have talked hours upon end how this is not so, but to no avail.

She told me the pastor preached on Catholics this past Sunday and I should have been there to hear it. Catholics just ain’t right because they can’t pray to God, a priest has to do it for them! I say “That’s a lie!” But of course it’s believed!

I wish my family could just be happy for me, because my wife, son and I are all happy to finally be joining the one true Church that Jesus Christ founded.

Have others experienced this same thing ? Why do you Protestants do this?

I do simpathise. My fathers side are all Baptist and just went nuts when they found out my family and I returned to the CC. My grandmother and her pastor were a big reason my mother left the CC. My grandmother God bless her is just waiting till the next family gathering to reconvert me. 🤷 I love them dearly as I am sure you do your family and friends but what they don’t like about the CC most likely is what they think the CC is. As to why they don’t always view Catholics as Christians. Or they view them as Christians but lost.

My wife is attending RCIA, and she was all set to come into full communion with the church until she recently told her mother that she was thinking of becoming Catholic. Her family is 1/4 Spanish, 1/4 Italian, and 1/2 mutt (HAHA), so she comes from a Catholic background… Her parents though, have not embraced Catholicism. Her family believes that “some” Catholics will go to heaven, but for the most part we are just some idol worshiping, Mary worshiping, praying to the dead sub-Christians! I really resent that the faith I am practicing and and passing on to my kids is something other Christians bash day in and day out. I once read on this forum that bashing Catholics is the last acceptable form of prejudice and stereotypes!

My suggestion is to just keep on keepen on!

Have a good on and pray for all those you love, even if they do not believe as you do…

It reminds me of a line from the Matrix… Morpheus states… my faith does not require you to believe. That is an awesome line!

My family has been really supportive of me, so far and they’re all Baptists. I think because I was an atheist for such a long time they are just relieved I’m a Christian and no matter if that’s Catholic Christian.
I think many, many Protestant beliefs are just that: protests against the True Church. If they were not indoctrinated with anti-Catholicism they would probably come home. ex. When I here my mom talk about someone she thinks is ‘saved’ and sinning she says, “Well s/he will have to answer to God for it.” It seems to me that line of thinking is more compatible with Catholic/purgatory than Protestant/OSAS.
Pray for them, if they are confrontational don’t let anger develop about it, just tell them, “I’ll pray for you if you’ll pray for me.”

I wish my family could just be happy for me, because my wife, son and I are all happy to finally be joining the one true Church that Jesus Christ founded.
If you were a Southern Baptist, you were already a part of the one true church that Jesus Christ founded.

Have others experienced this same thing ? Why do you Protestants do this?

Same reason Catholics do it when a Catholic leaves Catholicism for a Protestant church.

dnar,

They are concerned for you. For a lot of well meaning Protestants all they know about Catholicism is what they have been taught from men such as Jack Chick and Mike Gendron. They see Catholicism as a dreadful thing and so you joining it is something of great concern to them. Of course the Church which you are joining and the church which they see and have been taught about are two completely things.

I would just thank them for their concern. Let them know that this isn’t a spur of the moment decision and that it is something you feel the Holy Spirit pulling you towards. This isn’t going to be a popular decision within your old Baptist congregation but we are often called to do the unpopular thing as we follow our Lord. Be opened to His will.

May God bless you on your journey dnar.

**I was a Southern Baptist before I got saved and renounced traditions and precepts of men.

Tell him that if he believes in “once saved always saved,” he has no reason to fear for your salvation.

On the other hand, if he says that you apparently weren’t really saved, ask him how he knows if HE is really saved. After all, if you can leave the Baptists, why can’t he?**

Im a life long Catholic. I love my religion more than ever although I must admit that I came from a family who went to church but didn’t practice or discuss religion too much in the open. The older that myself and my siblings get though, the more that changes. Mom is absolutely devout and Dad was a convert from Baptist. I was always taught that Catholicism was the stronger, more conservative religion, therefore, if anything, others should convert to it. Recently, Im finding out that converts go both ways and probably more so away from Catholicism due to the brash attitude that protestants take towards Catholics. This, in itself is indicative of the downfall of protestants. They have no room for their brothers in Christ and cut down and basically spit at catholics whenever possible. I’ve begun a reading campaign to learn the basis for the positions protestants take against Catholics. As it turns out, they really have no basis at all other than the untruths, misunderstandings and outright lies that have been preached, preached, preached and stamped into them over the years about Catholics. Catholicism can provide a sound answer for any protestant accusation but protestants can not do the same. Indeed, Catholicolism is 100% based in scripture, and not just scripture but Jesus’ scripture first and the disciples scripture as a back-up to what Jesus said in scripture. Protestants tend to go the other way around by taking disciples scripture first backed up by Jesus’ scripture. Now, in consideration of this, who would you say is the original church founded by Jesus? In addition, they tend to ignore the scriptural facts that refute what they call their faith basis, which is nothing but hippocritical of them. The one area that I think the Catholic church has stumbled is by not firmly preaching the basis for their beliefs, although that is changing a little recently. I firmly believe that with the way that protestants are liberalizing their faith by permitting homosexuals, contraceptives, a miriad of versions of their church and God knows what next, just to bow to worldly desires, their time as a faith is truely limited in the big scheme of things. With all their different versions and “beliefs” and getting more and more all the time, they will just implode over time. Just as other heresay has gone by the wayside over time, so to will go protestantism. Keep the faith always. Time marches on…

You asked what is wrong with them.

First note, that many, especially Family, do have good intentions no matter how misguided their actions may be. So try not to allow yourselves to become alienated

Well many, most perhaps, are just plain ignorant of what Catholics Believe & have no real desire to correct this glaring deficiency. Why? Because their Pastor tells them not to bother. Couple that with the centuries long attacks on the Catholic Church and the amount of misinformation out there is almost beyond comprehension. ( stemming from the Fear that if you actually start reading Unapproved literature you can & will become corrupted and actually more well read & educated thus less easily controlled or manipulated. History is anathema to the Protestants esp. the ECFs))

Next up is the for younger/junior religious sects to feel the overwhelming need to denigrate all that are not THEM. After all they broke-away from another Order or Sect because someone had a “True Revelation from God via the Holy Spirit” that proves that this NEW Group has just been given the “Real Secrets of Salvation” that assure them ( and often only them) of access into Heaven. All others are defective and are Hell Bound. In short, tear down all of your rivals which will ensure a lifting up of your own flock ( or is that crock)

Be as Loving & tolerant as possible to your family. Realize they are not informed.
In the fullness of time & by the lives you live you will be able to demonstrate to them your LOVE of God and them.

Good Luck Vivat Jesus 🙂

It isn’t just Protestants who do this. When my husband and I left the Catholic church twelve years ago, my mother responded the same way your mother did. It goes both ways. Eventually, my mother accepted our decision; our relationship is extremely close, including some very meaningful discussions about our faith. Sometimes you simply have to agree to disagree so that you don’t hurt the people you love.

That statement hits the nail on the head. Very few outside of the Catholic Church know anything about the Church. Their knowledge of the Church is what has been told to them by friends, family and even their pastors. If only they would take the time to learn the truth you wouldn’t be having this problem and prehaps we wouldn’t have all these different churches teaching different things. We’d all be Catholic again as it was before.

I think many Protestants tend to act this way because they probably do not understand the official teachings of the Catholic Church. Protestants tend to see the Catholic way of salvation to be one of personal works. I also think modern day Protestants are so far from their Protestant roots too in doctrine, making it more difficult for them to see the common connection of salvation being all of grace through the merit of Christ. When I began to understand the official Roman Catholic teachings that salvation is through the merit of Christ through the sacraments, then I do not overreact as I onced did. Southern Baptists do not see baptism and communion to be means of grace, so it’s difficult for them to understand the Catholic belief of salvation through the sacraments. I think you have to link it to the merit of Christ and explain that you believe that salvation is by grace alone to have an open discussion.

You are right… I get so angry when I hear things that talk about the CC that are completely untrue. After my wife went to the Mass, she was so sad because she did not understand what was involved. She said that she felt further from God coming out of the Mass. Lets fast forward 9 months. She is attending RCIA, but still not sure she is going to convert, but now she understands the Mass and loves to go. She fully supports raising our children in the CC. She has told many people that all the things they have heard for years about the CC are wrong. Her family is probably the worst, but I am sooo happy that she will defend out household faith. She does not attend another church. She calls our home parish, her Church! I love it! I openly state to people I am Catholic and I hope they ask me questions!

This definitely goes both ways. I am a Protestant Southern Baptist who is considering also joining the CC in hopes that by being united in religion my husband (who is Catholic) will begin attending and “lead” our family like God intended.

Not all Protestants are ignorant bigots. Just like not all Catholics are either. I cannot tell you how many posts I have read on this site that have made me feel alienated and less than worthy, due to my not being a member of the “true” church. (So those of you posters who are so insulting need to remember if you want people to convert, like I may, set a good example DON’T insult or make generalizations or you will run off possible converts.) Tell your mother to remember that ALL who follow Jesus and believe in Him for salvation are Christians, no matter what church we worship in.

Many people have misconceptions about the CC. I know I have had, but I am trying to learn about it so I can sort out the differences before I decided what to do. The biggest reason I think there are misconceptions is because a person could not walk in off the street and attend a service and know what it going on. It’s very exclusive in that if you are not Catholic you feel very out of place and that is an unsettling feeling. That’s my view, anyway. Good luck on your issue.

WELCOME HOME :D:thumbsup:

Since you say you stopped attending the baptist church long ago, It may be that your mother is encouraging the pastor to come and see you.
The first thing to remember is that they are doing this out of Love. It is the same Love that God has for you that He allows this. By that I mean He is giving you this trial in order that you might draw closer to Him.

Overall I would say that if you do not wish to meet with this pastor then decline to do so. Right now might not be the best time since you will be starting RCIA soon.
On the other hand if you are inclined to talk to and try to explain to him all that you have found, by all means do so. Just be prepared to be bombarded with bible verses and mythology about Catholicism. In fact to avoid being overwhelmed, I would suggest a short meeting face to face and then further discussion via snail mail or e-mail. Have him write down his objections to the Catholic Church and then write back to him with the answers that demolish is claims. You certainly can come here for help if you need it.

Pray on this and decide which path seems right for this time and place on your journey.

Here again, you can only move slowly and firmly with your loved ones. As you go through RCIA, be willing to share what you are learning. Quote from official documents and where necessary ask them to produce Catholic sources to support their claims. Not a defrocked priest or some such mind you but an official Catholic source or document.
I wish my family could just be happy for me, because my wife, son and I are all happy to finally be joining the one true Church that Jesus Christ founded.

We all want what is best for our loved ones and are saddened when we think they are making a mistake.
As you live more fully and charitably in your faith I think they will come around to acceptance. Perhaps God will use you to bring others in you rfamily home to The Church.

Peace
James

EXACTLY. That’s exactly how I feel going to the few Catholic services I have attended. Why? I don’t know.

But my point to the one who started this thread is this: please don’t generalize and assume ALL Protestants think you are leaving Christianity. Maybe your family does, or your old church does, but not all do. Please don’t lump us all together that way. I do not think Catholics are non-Christians and I am Protestant.

This is not only my issue though… I am a minority in all sense of the word, but Catholics are looked down upon by many of the Chistian denominations. If you ask, many “Christians” do not know much about the CC, all they know is what they have been told by others, who really do not know anything as well. I am not going to defend any one who is hypocritical, because I have been warned on this forum for calling a fellow Catholic a hypocrite. None of us, nor any one in out faith, are perfect. I know based on my own experiences that others tend to try and attach a stigma around you when you say you are Catholic. I just be the best Catholic I can be and hopefully my actions will scream louder than any words!

God Bless

Please don’t quote a portion of my post to make a point. My wife is loving our parish and our priest… She is not sure of converting because her parents are very opposed to it.

I am glad to hear that some protestants see that we are Christians, in fact the CC is the first institute of Christianity!

Funny thing, but in another thread I was posting in, a Catholic said that it was of satan when a former Catholic met Jesus Christ in a Protestant church.

So…Why do you Catholics do this?

Seriously, people should read up on Spiritual abuse. When someone leaves Christian denomination A to join Christian denomination B, and Christian denomination A considers this someone somehow less of a Christian for joining an inferior church, that is spiritual abuse.

And I don’t care whether denomination A is THE CHURCH FOUNDED BY JESUS CHRIST or just your inferior, heretical Protestant church. It is all the same.
