I know this is not world news. However there is so much talk about the Proud Boys in this forum, that I came across this and like to share it. Just hear from the Chairman himself to get a better idea of who they are.

I was being facetious. Proud boys are often given that label, yet the man in charge is not white.

There’s definitely a streak of ethnic self-hatred in Proud Boys membership. I know lots of non-white people are involved. I think officially they claim to be supportive of “western civilisation”, something like that.

It’s counterintuitive but there are non-white white supremacists. There are always people who think siding with the oppressor will protect them from oppression, though that usually doesn’t end well for them. See: Jewish Nazis

I don’t think that indicates self hatred. Just an appreciation for a better way of life than what their ancestors may have had in other parts of the world.

I think it’s kind of hard to escape the implications of defending “the west” from a historical and political point of view of you aren’t white.

Except that since the industrial revolution we’ve had an objectively better standard of living than the rest of the world, with more technological advancement, medical advancement, and as a rule more stable governments.

Now, that’s likely all behind us, but for the past 300 ish years that’s been the case.

West isn’t exclusively white. Latinos are considered western by virtue of their cultural, religious, and political heritage from Spain and Portugal. North Africa is as well due to a shared Roman past.

But your standard for “better” is a western one that may not be and is not shared by everyone worldwide.

It obviously predominantly is. That’s even more the case historically.

I have no British heritage, yet it seems to me that on the whole living in the Anglosphere is better than living pretty much anywhere else,. So I don’t see that being other than western European necessarily disqualifies one from appreciating western culture.

Again, plenty of people in the world do not share the same definition of “better” and that’s the only point I was attempting to make.

People in the geographic “west” are white, have identified strongly as white, and the concept of “whiteness” was an important part of the ideology promoted in the “west” politically.
