Puerto Rican Catholics demand legal defense of traditional marriage

San Juan, Mar 28, 2007 / 08:25 am (CNA).- More than 10,000 Catholics gather last weekend in front of the Capitol building in San Juan to demand the Puerto Rican Congress defend marriage between one man and one woman.

The protest was organized by the Bishops’ Conference of Puerto Rico and included the recitation of the rosary “for the truth, life, human dignity, marriage, and the family.”

Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez of San Juan participated in the protest and told reporters, “We are here to celebrate the truth, life, human dignity, marriage and the family as gifts of the Creator for the wellbeing of humanity and the unity of the human race.”

The Puerto Rican Congress is currently debating a reform of the Civil Code that would widen the definition of marriage to include unions between two persons who live together in a “voluntary, stable, public and continuous” relationship during a period of “no less than three years.”

It would also allow for legal recognition of sex changes and would make same-sex unions equivalent to marriage.

Father Fernando Felices, who graduated with a degree in law from the University of Harvard, told the EFE news agency, “This issue is about giving special treatment for a particular kind of behavior which, even though they are adults, society must decide whether or not to allow.”
Bravo 👍 to Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez of San Juan for standing up for Catholic family values… I am going to send a him a letter of praise! For a small island like Puerto Rico to have 10,000  people protesting the secular move of legalizing same-sex unions is pretty important in my book…

God bless

Good news.
I hate to sound pessimistic but Puerto Rico needs our prayers.
As Catholic rich as Puerto Rico is it’s emulating Europe in which secularism is growing.
They don’t know how lucky they are to be blessed with a Catholic culture.
I’m always in awe whenever I visit there and see all the wonderful things like the many cathedrals, chapels, shrines, university, schools and monasteries prevalent troughout the island.
There is an aboundance of catholic stores where you can buy books, medals, statues, etc.
Where I live now in the Bible Belt it’s 97% protestant and none of the Christian bookstores carry Catholic Items. The Catholic churches save one are victims of the EACW. It’s not Catholic friendly here… 😦
Okay, I’m done whining now… 🙂

I understand your pessimism…The secularist influence in PR worries me alot too. But in the end God will have HIS WAY whether we like it or not.

You can whine all you like…no problem. 😃

Not to be off topic on my own thread…😛 where did you visit in PR? or PM me…lol

Oh…below is my mother’s hometown church of “St. Anthony of Padua” in Barranquitas, PR which also has a cute little Catholic Giftshop on the side of it… I wish I was there now…sniff

God bless
