Hey everyone! I’m looking for some advice on the subject of Purgatory! First off, can it be avoided? And is anyone scared of ending up there too? And what are some good prayers for the souls that are already there? I hear they can’t pray for themselves so we must do so for them!

Dying in a state of grace, no attachment to sin, and with no temporal punishment left for your sins gives you a pass on Purgatory since there’s nothing to purge, so yes you can avoid it. The Saints have done it and the Lord gives all of us enough Grace to do it.

I can’t say I’m scared of ending up there. Quite frankly, if I make it there I’ll be happy because I definitely don’t deserve to be there.

I don’t know any specific prayers for the souls in Purgatory. I normally just offer a rosary or a mass for them. I’ll also offer up any of my sufferings for the souls in Purgatory.

Although this information is taken from private revelation, I’ll share it.

If you confess your sins on Divine Mercy Sunday, you will receive a full remission of your sins including the temporal punishment due to sin. This great grace is given to us because we live in the end-times. Father Michael Gaitley says that this time of grace was given to us through the merits of the martyrs who died in the last century.

There’s also the pious tradition of the Sabbatine privilege. If you die wearing the Brown Scapular, Our Lady will rescue you from purgatory on the Saturday after your death. The Carmelites don’t promote this message, but it is an ancient tradition that is believed by many - including saints.

The best prayer for the Holy Souls is to offer Mass for them. Or consider doing a daily plenary indulgence. The prayer of St. Gertrude is also much loved (you can google for it).

  1. don’t fear it…it’s a process not a place
  2. it’s not Hell…it’s not even pre-Hell…think of it as a really hot shower…painful in the beginning but feels better the longer you are there.

There’s nothing wrong with wearing a scapular, but this sounds very much like superstition to me. To each his own.

There’s prayer intentions for souls in purgatory in every mass. So… pray the Mass when you attend.

There’s also prayer intentions for them in LoTH evening prayer so pray evening prayer.

Take those prayers, internalize them, then make them your own when you spontaneously want to pray for the souls in purgatory.

Wearing the Brown Scapular goes beyond just physically wearing it. A person should wear it similar to the armor of God St Paul speaks of.

That’s not to argue the validity of the Sabintine privelidg. Only wearing the scapular is more than donning clothing

Pray for the souls in Purgatory. Also having a devotion to Our Lady and the Eucharist will surely be most effective in this matter. Saint Joseph is the patron of a happy death so that could help as well.

Saint Pope John Paul II, from what I have read, had a lifelong devotion to the Brown Scapular. When he was shot in 1981, it was reported that he insisted his scapular be left on as he was prepped for surgery.

“Father Mariano Cera, a Carmelite priest, told Inside the Vatican magazine: ‘Just before the Holy Father was operated on, he told the doctors, ‘Don’t take off the scapular.’ And the surgeons left it on.’ The Holy Father credited the miraculous preservation of this life to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

I never take my scapular off, except in the shower. It’s not a “lucky talisman”, as true devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary is a requisite.

I recommend the Heroic Act of Charity as a means of praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Offering your daily Plenary Indulgences to them can possibly shorten your stay in Purgatory some day. Imagine hundreds or even thousands of grateful souls who went on to their heavenly reward, thanks in part to your efforts, praying for you in return!

Yes. I am terribly frightened of Purgatory. The fires of Purgatory seem horrific beyond belief according to the article Read Me or Rue It published at EWTN:
Read Me or Rue it
by Fr. Paul O’Sullivan
  • APPROVAL OF HIS EMINENCE THE CARDINAL PATRIARCH OF LISBON
  • Cardinal’s Palace, Lisbon March 4, 1936
…there is no hunger, no thirst, no poverty, no need, no pain, no
suffering to compare with what the Souls in Purgatory endure…People do not realize what Purgatory is. They have no conception of its dreadful pains, and they have no idea of the long years that souls are detained in these awful fires. …
WHAT IS PURGATORY?
It is a prison of fire in which nearly all [saved] souls are plunged after
death and in which they suffer the intensest pain.

Here is what the great Doctors of the Church tell us of Purgatory:

So grievous is their suffering that one minute in this awful fire seems
like a century.

St. Thomas Aquinas, the Prince of Theologians, says that the fire of
Purgatory is equal in intensity to the fire of Hell, and that the slightest
contact with it is more dreadful than all the possible sufferings of this
Earth!.. etc…

He must have believed in the sabbatine privilege. He wouldn’t have ordered the doctors to leave his scapular alone if it was just a symbol. St. John Paul wanted to make sure that he died wearing his scapular for a reason.

The Sabbatine privilege is specific to the first Saturday after death. The Church has discouraged propagating the Sabbatine privilege.

The brown scapular is still a sacramental. The scapular itself has no “power” on it’s own. It’s an expression of faith & it’s that devotion he “must have believed in”

It’s a Marian devotion of living in allegiance to Jesus.

Trust in the mercy of a loving God. God is not a sadist. He has no need for our suffering. Could purgatory be a place where we just won’t give up the things we think important in this life? What if purgatory is like the party the father asks the older son to join after the prodigal son returns. The older brother lives in purgatory and won’t go in because of the other party goers. Trust in the mercy of God!

Actually, I believe that the indulgence allows for receiving sacramental absolution in a seven- or eight-day period around Divine Mercy Sunday. I’m sure that there’s a website for the Divine Mercy that spells it out.

Note, however, that like all indulgences, this one doesn’t cover future sins. It’s not a “get out of jail card”; if you subsequently sin, you need absolution / forgiveness, and there might be “temporal punishment due to sin” attached to those later sins.

The grace of Divine Mercy Sunday is not an indulgence. That’s why some of my traditionalist friends reject it; they believe that it’s too good to be true.
