Sometimes it’s difficult to explain to some Catholics that there are Protestants, and just as difficult to explain to some Protestants that there are Catholics. Someday all will wake up. I know you and I are here to learn from each other, explain our beliefs and to correct and dispell distortions, lies, myths, etc.

As for the idea of Purgatory, it actually goes back to OT times. The majority of the Jews back then believed in a “holding place” where the soul went after death to await judgement by God. They knew that nothing unclean could enter heaven. Since some very pious men died in war, the people knew they were ritually unclean. But since they were fighting for God and for justice, etc. God would not deny them heaven. But how could they be purified? After much study, debate, and prayer, the answer was the “holding place” where they can be cleansed of their sins and be pure enough to enter heaven. This "holding place applied then to all who died. Flavius Josephus, a devout Jewish historian, describes this in the book “The Writings of Josephus”. Many ( if not all ) Jews of today believe in this “holding place” and pray for the souls of the dead, asking for God’s mercy. The Church has always taught about this “holding place” from the beginning, developing it into Purgatory. But since it is not dogma, we are free to accept or reject it.

As far as the money obtained from indulgences back then, it was used to support the crusade of the time ( and probably to pay off some loans and other debts too ).

I would like some documentation. The historian Warren Carroll has stated that no money was ever paid for indulgences. That there was a misunderstanding and it had the looks of paying for indulgences. To give money was considered worthy. Indulgences were granted for supporting projects like St. Peter’'s. Paying money was considered a work but was so easily misunderstood the Church bands it altogether. There are those who claim it is still done but have provide no evidence. Their claim is suspect. We can use the old proof of truth 1.would they lie 2. are they in a position to know 3. can you check it out to decide the truth. Those posters fail on at least two. If you fail on only one, it is false.

All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.

The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.606 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:607
Code:
As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.608
1032
This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."609 From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.610 The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:
Code:
Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers
I don’t understand why you feel that we are free to reject it?

Doesn’t sound as if you can reject it as a Catholic:nope:

1beleever, you might want to look into the history of the LXX, if you haven’t already. The New Testament actually makes references to the books that Protestants have removed, such as Hebrews 11 that actually refer to 2 Maccabees chapter 7. This blew me away when I came to realize the bible I was using was incomplete.
Where can the LXX be found, and is it universally accepted as a accurate document by the evangeliecal society? Was Hebrews 11 removed and the restored?

Well of course I believe that Jesus was fully God and fully man:rolleyes:And God, His Father, through the Holy Spirit, gave him the power to forgive sins. The disciples received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and Peter told the people to turn back to God for forgiveness of their sins, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit! So, they were still turning people towards God for forgiveness:thumbsup:By the way, how many scriptures actually document the apostles forgiving sins?
Who knows. who cares. But to date no one could number. Just these 40 days of lent would be more than I could count. You figure they are having special masses during lent now, and confession after every mass. And confession you figure every single Sat that’s for sure, and then whenever requested. I could not even guess this week, alone in the days of the original apostles.

If this is true then why are we raked over the coals because wo do not believe in purgatory? If you reject itas a Catholic we are called all sorts of names.
I guess it’s probably either the mis-understanding or rejection of the concept of the Catholic belief in Purgatory. If you understand why we believe, then we should not “rake you over the coals”.

I myself believe in the existence of Purgatory as a place of purification before entrance into heaven. There are many places in scripture to support this ( although rejected by many ) and much secular documentation to support its existence. But I know that my belief in Purgatory is NOT necessary for my salvation.

Oh lB I gotta kiss you for this one. Then do you agree that the Pope is indeed a Man of God. And if you do agree that he IS INDEED a MAN OF GOD would a Man of God not be made Holy by God. Bingo!!! THE HOLY FATHER.!!!😃

Got another question for you, do you believe in the teachings of Peter. What happened Peter when he walked on water?

That ring lb is nothing special to you, and I can see your point. But I ask you to open your heart and use my eyes for one moment. That ring is just a ring granted. But that ring is a symbol the same as your ring is lB a symbol that unties you and your spouse to Christ. And that ring is blessed by the Holy Spirit, the same as my ring and my husbands rings are. But the Pope was chosen by God to be united to only him. To lead the Church and help us get into heaven by teachng us the word.

That ring means he is the leader of the Church and symbolizes his unity with God and God only and forsaking all others. Do you wear a ring lB to show the world that you to have been united to someone and will forsake all others???
[SIGN]So, using your logic, all men of God(pastors preachers, evangelists) could be called Holy Father as well:eek:[/SIGN]And you are right, his ring is no big deal to me. It is a symbol, which may or may not have been blessed by the Holy Spirit! He could probably do without it! I mean, I have heard some say that it is tantamount to idolatry! And when Peter walked on water, he was fine until he took his eyes off Jesus! He was suddenly aware of the storm; the wind and waves! His faith wavered, but Jesus lifted him up, and rescued him! Sounds like our lives, huh? We do just fine as long as we keep our eyes on Jesus. We can get out of that boat with confidence, knowing that He will protect us.👍

No not at all. I like you could never call a pastor, preacher, evangliests Father. Because they were not ordained by the Sacrament of Holy Orders. I could claim I am a Pastor if I wanted and start a church tommorow. It is done everyday. You can actually get a degree on the internet. I know someone that did it. But the internet did not give them the authrority to forgive sins, etc. Holy Orders did straight from Christ. All authority comes from Christ by the laying of hands passed on by the Apostles.

Look at Paul for example he had a calling straight from God when he was persecuting the Church. But then he converted and wanted to be a Apostle . Jesus sent Ananias to still go to Paul and lay his hands on him and fill him with the Holy Spirit. The laying of the hands is what is called Holy Orders passed on by the Apostles.

I have the power of the Holy Spirit but not to be a Priest, Bishop, Pope etc. The scripture says to be carefull of who you lay your hands on for the Priesthood. Not all are called. I was not called or I would be a nun, and not a Mother and wife. Even if I was a nun I still do not have the power that a Priest would to forgive sin.

What about you, do you wear a wedding ring, you could probally do without it also. But why would you want to hide it from the world. Does that ring not symbolize your love for your spouse. Why would the Pope want to hid it?

Its all about authority and who as it. The Pope has the authority over the RCC. The Priest has the power of the HS but he still recognizes the authority of the Pope. The Pope has authority over him given to him by God.

Did Pilate not have authority over Jesus. Did he not tell Jesus that he had the authority to crucify him or release him. Did Jesus deny that, or did Jesus say you WOULD have NO power over me IF IT HAD NOT BEEN GIVEN TO YOU FROM UP ABOVE. We both know that No one has power over God. But God gives power to other people.

If I get a ticket from a cop he has authority to do so.
If I go to court the court has authority to put me in jail or release me.

All Authority is given from God. God let Pilate have authority. If it was not Gods will he would have not had it. But it was given to him and he did indeed exercise it. Do you not agree?

And back to Purgatory. The Pope teaches that purgatory does indeed exist. He has this authority from God to teach us. If the Pope is given authority from God who are we to disobey him? I cannot comprehend how anyone can not see his authority over us.

This authority was given to him by Christ for a reason.

Peter was given authority, how can Peter’s authority be recognized but the Popes ignored. Is the Pope not a direct decendant of Peter, is the Church not passed on from Peter.

A preacher, etc has never had authority passed on to be the leader of the RCC. That is why a preacher has never been called the Holy Father. There is only one Holy Father in the RCC.

The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:607especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain
DOCTRINE
Any truth taught by the Church as necessary for acceptance by the faithful. The truth may be either formally revealed (as the Real Presence), or a theological conclusion (as the canonization of a saint), or part of the natural law (as the sinfulness of contraception). In any case, what makes it doctrine is that the Church authority teaches that it is to be believed. this teaching may be done either solemnly in ex cathedra pronouncements or ordinarily in the perennial exercise of the Church’s magisterium or teaching authority. Dogmas are those doctrines which the Church proposes for belief as formally revealed by God. (Etym. Latin doctrina, teaching.)
By definition it must be accepted. It is not something like apparitions that can be believed or rejected. It MUST be accepted. I don’t know where you get that you can reject a doctrine. You have not provided official documents to back up your assertion.

That is exactly the point. When did we as RC have the authority to pick and choose what we want to accept and what we don’t. Being true RC is to stay loyal to the Pope and the RCC and its teachings!👍 It is not only what we should do it is commanded of us.😃

Believe it or not, this is one of the many reasons why I could never convert to catholicism! God is, has been, and will always be HOLY FATHER! I have no problems with catholics calling their priests, bishops, and the pope father, and would hope that they would afford me the same courtesy! Of course, when we mentor or teach someone in any field, we are acting as a father; hoping to steer them into truth, and knowledge. Paul, who had many charges under his tutelage, felt as though those whom he was shepherding, were as his"children". But I have always and will continue to call ONLY God, Holy Father. Seems awkwaed to say to a priest,“forgive me father, for I have sinned!” To God, yes, to a priest, no! With all due respect to the pope of course!😃
Your reasoning is so shallow that it defies logic, and your understanding of the Faith is the same. Wow! No one can help your lack of knowledge or understanding of the Church; you have too much baggage and prejudice that you have been carrying around inside of you for so many years that it is almost impossible at this time in your life to even see the errors that you hold to be the Truth. By the way, nobody is even asking you to convert to the Catholic Church. But if calling a priest ‘Father’ is what is keeping you from learning what the Church actually teaches, that is one of the most petty things I have ever heard. I will pray for your enlightenment.

Did not St Paul say that who ever is sick to call upon the elders of the Church? I have yet to enter the Church, but this seems to be a wonderful arrangement. God knows what our sins are. To confess them to a priest of his Church and hear, “I absolve you in the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit”, ties right in with Christ telling the Apostles in John 20:23. Why give them this power if it isn’t necessasry?

Are you argeeing or disagreeing with his point. If so, what are you disagreeing with???

does it not mention in Luke 16:19-31 that there is a final destination after death that is permanent?

That was a parable by Jesus. Heaven was not yet an option since Jesus had not yet died. So where was Lazarus? Jesus preached to those in hell. This helll was a waiting place for those who died before Jesus resurection. There is a final destination for all of us. Heaven, Hell and then there is purgatory which is not a destiantion but a process of purgation to our attachment of sins. It will make us perfect and able to enter heaven.

The CCC does not mention Purgatory as a ‘place’ in time and space, but rather the state of one’s soul after death. If one is experiencing purgatory after death, one is on his or her way to Heaven. 👍
