Purpose of the Perpetual Virginity of Mary

1.John was apparently Mary’s nephew.
2. Jesus’s brothers didn’t have faith in Him.

That’s the Protestant rationale,
Yeah… they’re so clever ,they are rationalizing themselves out of being in the highest level of heaven with the Virgin Mary.

To me, some points in this thread demonstrate the dangers of:
  1. Attempting to go by bible alone.
  2. Thinking as 21st century man does and not as the God-fearing, chosen race of Hebrews did, and still do.
  3. In such matters, the bible is incomplete and says so.
  4. Mary vowed to be the slave of her (only Son, First born - Zechariah 12:10). What does “vow” mean?
  5. Among the Apostles and disciples, it was common knowledge that Mary had no other children - for this reason, exactly ZERO “other children” or “children of Mary” are mentioned in the bible. Zip. Zero. Nada.
  6. The post-reformation and utterly vulgar man-made suggestion that Mary violated her vow, turned away from God, and sought worldly pleasure is, frankly, repulsive. Did Jesus create His mother so poorly, or with such poor knowledge or ability that he just couldn’t see it coming?
Nonsense!

There is not a single hint of this in Holy Writ. What we do know is that Mary is the only human being to ever live who spent life, from virgin womb to virgin tomb with Jesus Christ.

No other.

Think: Who seeks to degrade perfection? Who seeks to turn souls away from God? Who is at enmity with the mother of God in the Flesh? Who is a liar and the father of lies?

Think about it from this perspective and you will begin to understand the attacks on Mary.

Degrade how? The perfectly natural, God created conjugal act does not degrade anything… If Mary were to have engaged in marital acts with her husband, her virtue would not be compromised one bit, her purity would not be tarnished and her human ‘perfection’ would not be degraded.

Did someone suggest that Mary turned away from God? I’ve never heard anyone suggest that.

What do you mean by this? That Mary and Jesus were never apart physically or something else?

Why the hang up on sex?
Very annoying when people do things like insist it is critical to the character of Mary that she remains a virgin for life (ie never has sex), and write long dissertations on the subject, then respond to criticism with “lol why the hang up on sex?”

Got it… so how do normal marital relations impact purity in your view?
It’d be like frequent reception of Holy Communion as opposed to the minimum.

Talking about an absence doesn’t really count.

I guess I don’t see that as a valid comparison.

Frequenting communion is an abundance of good. However, marital relations between a couple is a good too… so your point doesn’t really make good sense.

The same question could be asked for a non-virginal Joseph. What is your point,
Many of the comments in this thread indicate that it would have been too difficult or too impossible for him to be married and not have relations with Mary or she isn’t submissive if she wasn’t having relations with him and the like, so…

So my point is, why couldn’t St., Joseph choose to remain virginal? Why are people finding it so hard to understand that Mary and Joseph didn’t have sexual relations?

If we can have faith she conceived without relations, why can’t we have faith that Mary and Joseph chose to continue to not have relations?

The minimum amount of reception is good too. The gravity might not be the same in the examples, but that wasn’t what I was comparing.

You clearly didn’t understand my point. Let me restate it. Does Mary’s virginity necessitate Joseph’s?

No and I didn’t say it did. It seems like you missed my point, why couldn’t Joseph have chosen virginity also? Why is it so hard to believe?

Well, I was just countering apparent thoughts that Mary - the mother who our Lord created to bear Himself,

**the mother who…

He created…

to bear Himself**

…was just a common woman, no different from someone shopping at Wal-Mart.

That’s why.

As to marital relations, there is biblical evidence that she never intended to. There is no biblical evidence that she did.

So why add to scripture?

To make Mary common is to make Jesus common.

Why do that? Who wants us to do that?

It seems like the natural solution to me,
Yes, the natural solution but very little about Jesus’ birth was natural but supernatural. Mary said with God all things are possible.
We’re talking about Joseph not Jesus.

Yes but Joseph was his foster father specifically chosen by God with a specific reason and purpose and Joseph is a saint because of his obedience to God.

Can someone explain the purpose of this doctrine to me?
It is true. Therefore, the purpose of the Doctrine is to reveal something that is true.
Why is it so supremely important to insist Mary and Joseph never had sex that we have to consider it heresy to interpret the scriptures some other way?
I don’t understand why you object. It is a fact. It is true. It is revealed by God and we must believe anything that God reveals. Why do you object? You said:
I have no problem with accepting that Mary was always a virgin.
It sure sounds like you have a problem with it.
The issue I have with the teaching is that I dont see a reason for it.
Being a fact is a good enough reason. Why must there be another?
