Pope Francis will host Vladimir Putin this week at the Vatican, playing international diplomat at a time when the Russian president finds himself excluded from the G7 summit and blasted by President Barack Obama and others over the conflict in Ukraine.
Francis has faced his own criticism over Ukraine, with Ukrainian church leaders reproaching the pontiff for not forcefully condemning Russia’s takeover of Crimea. The pope has also called the fighting between government forces and pro-Russia separatists in Eastern Ukraine “horrible fratricidal violence,” a remark that the head of Ukraine’s Greek Catholic church said “reminded us of Soviet propaganda.”

Interesting. Sounds like a very complicated situation to me. It also sounds like Mr. Putin is trying to un-isolate himself by visiting one of the few Western leaders that will actually recieve him.

Putin has become an international pariah by his own doing. He’s trying to generate some positive headlines by visiting a popular world leader. Never thought Putin and Francis would ever be in the same room.

I wonder if Putin is an atheist?

Well if Pope Francis could meet with people like Pelosi or Obama, Putin would be tame.

Who knows he doesn’t do the catholic western leader thing of claiming to be religious but leading the most secular and un christian policies. Putin might be the opposite but its his governmental actions that count.

Putin is a politician first and foremost. When it is to his benefit, he is anything he needs to be–in this case,.Russian Orthodox.

Certain govt, nongov, and press outlets may but shocked and saddened to learn that Pope Francis probably isn’t keen on supporting their westward push of an ideology that is openly antagonistic to Christian values in general.

Its very possible he views a Putin Orthodox presence as favorable to the one the US and key Western European leaders want. No idea but I would certainly leave it in the realm of possible.
