Everyone has sinned all throughout their lives, not just once but many times over and over and over again.
If one rejects God’s mercy that is offered to them in their lives - and/or severs entirely their relationship with God through mortal sin - then why would an eternal hell be unjust?
 
Well, of course, you’ll hear, “But even if a person sinned every minute of their lives for 80 years, surely a punishment of 80 years in hell would suffice”. But when a person dies and rejects God, that person doesn’t just reject ‘at that moment’ and then spend eternity in hell regretting the rejection and wishing to repent; the person who is sinning mortally at the time of death BY rejecting God (this is a mortal sin) will continue to do so throughout eternity–fully and freely. So that is why ‘eternal hell’ is the punishment, it is for eternal mortal sin, not a ‘finite’ sin.
