Q from a friend who has become a Satanist

oh please! perhaps this Cabot is related to the close-by Vermont Cabots of the Cheese Fame? Why on earth would Laurie Cabot’s daughter be hanging around Catholic Forums? To persecute us? :: roll eyes :: or maybe she wants to put a curse on us?

No I got my answer–you can all talk among yourselves–I don’t care if this is highjacked anymore. LOL thank you. In fact here is a tangent for you all to run with:

if a religion must fill a need----why? Why doesn’t mankind just worship to worship? Why don’t humans just love God without NEEDING a Savior or a favor?

Because if you were doing your homework, she clearly states she studies Wicca, that’s why! Why are you people arguing with me when the question I asked Her and HER only is really none of your business?

When I first moved to California from New Jersey when I was a kid, everyone I met who asked me where I was from would ask me if I knew someone they knew in New Jersey. Like New Jersey is one little spot on the map and we all know each other. My point is, Cabot is a common name in New England, and Wicca is a common religion. Wouldn’t it have been much more straightforward if you just asked her if she was related to Laurie? Geesh! The way you are creeping around it makes it imply that you think she has nefarious motives for being here.

back to the point of the thread…anyone? WHY don’t humans just worship because they love God? Why is it always about what you can get out of God? Aren’t we proving the Devil right when he said this about Job?

As Catholics we are called to worship out of love. Love has everything to do with it. Our whole mass revolves around it. It’s not just people bowing and kneeling and lighting candles for no reason. Every action we take has a meaning meant to increase our level of worship. We are sensual beings. We need our senses to help us out. We aren’t called to worship to “get something out of God”. We can of course ask for help, but we have been told clearly that we were never promised happiness in this world but in the next.

what if there was no next world? would we worship God just because He created us if there was only the here and now?

If there wasn’t??? Sure. An all perfect, omniscent, omnipresent being deserves everything we can give him even if we get nothing in return… But that’s really speculative since heaven does exist. So I’m not really sure why we’re indulging this question… Was there a reason you asked?

my friend who is becoming a Satanist believes that this is it, no other afterlife and that we should all be out for what we can get and indulge our selfishness while accepting personal responsibility for our actions and their consequences. She maintains that religion is only needed if you feel inadequate and that it is self-serving. Just trying to get some thoughts together to talk to her with intelligence since she does not accept anything faith-based.

Gotcha. There is an athiest thread I’ve been posting on along with some others. You should take a look. Be forewarned though there are three threads because one wasn’t long enough. Each one is longer then 1,000 posts so give yourself enough time to at least browse through them.

Another suggestion is to not try to convert your friend. Usually if you try to do so outright, they only get defensive and stubborn. Truth will reveal itself though so don’t worry if you don’t convince them immediately. If they’re even remotely interested in learning, there are a lot of great resources you can point them to.

I’m getting kind of long winded here, so I’ll wait to post more later.

If she doesn’t need religion, why does she self-identify as a Satanist rather than just an atheist?

because she feels the need to ‘cleanse’ herself from her religious past. She is a La Veyan Satanist–not the theatrical teenaged gothic Hollywood ****. She went to one Black Mass to experience religious ‘catharsis’ and said that was enough dramatics. She does not do the baphomet/red robe stuff you see on tv. She is more into the psychic manipulation stuff.

she tells me everything, we were like sisters for over 12 years. but now she is so bitter and frustrated with life.

Yes, it sounds that way, and probably a bit confused as well. That is too bad. The way out of bitterness and frustration is not to surround yourself with more cynicism. 😦

Oh, the meekness of Christ you display.

I have friends who are Satanists because they grew up knowing no better. One of them is a High Priest. I’ve worked with him for over a year helping him leave his former life. It’s worth it. They are human beings too and need love. Love is what separates them from God.
